Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies on the Geography of Virginia The Indians of the Northern Neck Country being friendly, their presence presented an additional inducement to English settlers, by reason of the profits to be realized from their trade. It was in this region that the next English settlements were founded. If tobacco was king in the James River country, the oyster may be aptly designated as queen in the Northern Neck. In the establishment of an industrial system much depends upon the forces and conditions which give rise to the initiative. The ac quirement of food and clothing constitutes the first essential. This obtained, the most profitable commodity, or means of exchange, is next to receive attention. The Virginia colonists had to meet the first by hunting, fishing, the cultivation of corn, raising of livestock, and bartering with the Indians. All of the conditions precluded a surplus of food stuffs, so that these are ruled out at this stage as possible commodities for exchange. But even if they had been pos sible, the demand would have been so limited as to make the produc tion unprofitable. They must produce a surplus of that for which there is a pressing demand in England to realize profitable results. What were the leading English imports? Iron and steel from Spain; copper from Sweden; wine, salt and canvas from France; silks and velvets from Italy; spices from Asia; and naval supplies, such as tar, pitch, cordage, masts and yards, from Russia and Poland. The search of the colonists for gold and copper had been futile; in 1620, iron mines were opened at the James River Falls, but aban domed because inferior; the grape was neither adapted to the climate nor soil; great difficulty was experienced in supplying the domestic demand for saAbout the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Geography, civics, and literature, in easy phases, are frequently woven in. Human and social values have been kept in mind from beginning to end. The author's sincere thanks are hereby tendered to all his friends, old pupils and others, who have generously aided him in the preparation of this book. Some have gathered facts, some have sup plied photographs, some have spoken the needed word of encouragement. All have helped: to all he is grateful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comprehensive Description of Virginia, and the District of Columbia: Containing a Copious Collection of Geographical, Statistical, Political, Commercial, Religious, Moral, and Miscellaneous Information, Chiefly From Original Sources We are well aware that it is considered by critics to be an act of unpardonable impertinence to obtrude an imperfect work upon the notice of the public, and then apologize for its imperfections. But we beg leave to assure their cynical Lordships that this is no meat for them, and of course they need not whet their beaks at our announcement of its imperfections. Our apology is not made to deprecate their wrath, but in deference to a generous public, which will be thankful to the enterprize which gives it a mass of information which was not possessed before, and not cavil because every fact is not given which exists, or those which are given are not in the very best form in which they could have been presented. The publisher of this work lays claim to no literary attainment whatever: he only claims the merit due to boldness in enterprize and unconquerable perseverance in execution. He has been upwards of two years collecting the materials for this work, from individuals residing in every quarter of the state, expending much money in the acquisition of his matter, at a time when he was scarcely able to support his family. But this method of collecting matter, although it produced considerable delay, ensured the most recent and authentic information which could be procured. The almost innumerable contributions when received had to be examined and arranged, and such parts as were thought either useful or interesting, culled from the mass of unnecessary matter which sometimes encumbered the communications. Smith, Superintendent Virginia Military Institute, Lexington. General: In entering upon the duties of the office which has been assigned me in connection with the noble State Institution over which you preside, it has appeared most advisable, first to collect and embody in a series of Preliminary Reports, all existing information bearing upon the objects of the survey. These objects briefly stated are to develop the physical resources of the State, to make known its geography, and to point out the great commercial advantages which naturally arise from its situation with regard to the sea and the interior; to show the national importance of that situation and the benefits to arise from turning it to account; also, to collect from the people and embody in like manner all the information already possessed by them, as to the climate, soil and productions of the State, its mineral resources, water-power and manufacturing facilities, to the end that industry may be stimulated, enterprise encouraged, the material prosperity of the people advanced, and the general welfare of the country promoted.
