This book was released on 2014-10-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statement Analysis is the scientific process by which deception is detected through the words used. Analytical Interviewing is a legally sound, non-intrusive, non-interpretive method of gaining information from the interviewee based upon the subject's own language. These techniques are invaluable to corporations, businesses, families, law enforcement, teachers, lawyers, therapists, investigators, doctors, sales and anyone in need of protection from deception. Law enforcement separates the innocent from the guilty, businesses can screen out deceptive applicants before they become employees who file fraudulent claims, including unemployment, disability and various fraudulent suits. The author uses examples from murders, missing persons, theft, sexual assault and even child molestation to show how words will reveal the truth from deception, and that trained listening is a skill that, once acquired, will put the trainee at a strong advantage over the deceptive.

The secoCavafy's Historical Poems is the first volume of a four-book set constituting a study of the life and opus of this fascinating poet. The second volume is an anecdotal life detailing Cavafy's home and its atmosphere: the man, the poet, and his lifestyle; the odes of his compatriot partisans; the praises of his foreign admirers; the barbs and insults of his critics and revilers; the poet as a critical ironist; and the last part of his life. More than one hundred commentators are quoted, and just as many of his poems are used where it seemed appropriate. A third volume consists of erratic commentaries containing the author's evaluation and criticism of the main contributions to Cavafy's poetry. That is these of George Seferis, Sir Maurice Bowra, Robert Liddel, Edmund Keeley, Grigorios Xenopoulos, Timos Malanos, Stratis Tsirkas, John Sareyiannis, and others. These follow an opening chapter on Hellenization and a second chapter on the controversial subject of the dates of composition of Cavafy's poems. The fourth volume, The Canon, is a verse translation of the 150 poems Cavafy accepted as his mature opus, including the original Greek verses, accompanied by detailed examination of the poet's craft and style. That is to say the meter, length of verse, wedging, rhyme, enjambment, titles, organization, punctuation, the absences, lyricism, periphrasis, description, narrative, suggestive image, abstractions, transmission, maturity, content, language, irony, intellectuality, etc. nd volume is An Anectodal Life detailing Cavafy's home and its atmosphere: the man, the poet and his lifestyle; the odes of his compatriot partizans; the praises of his foreign admirers; the barbs and insults of his critics and revilers; the poet as a critical ironist, and the last part of his life. Download or read book Rogue Tory written by Denis Smith and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2013-11-19 with total page 1172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Dafoe Book Prize Winner of the University of British Columbia Medal for Canadian Biography 1995 marked the 100th anniversary of that most charismatic and enigmatic public figure, the thirteenth prime minister of Canada, John George Diefenbaker. Beloved and reviled with equal passion, he was a politician possessed of a flamboyant, self-fabulizing nature that is the essential ingredient of spellbinding biography. After several runs at political office, Diefenbaker finally reached the Commons in 1940; sixteen years later he was leader of the Progressive Conservative Party. In 1958, after a campaign that dazzled the voters, the Tories won the largest majority in the nation’s history: the Liberal party was shattered, its leader, Lester Pearson, humiliated by an electorate that had chosen to “follow John.” Diefenbaker’s victory promised a long and sunny Conservative era. It was not to be: instead Dief gave the country a decade of continuous convulsion, marked by his government’s defeat in 1963 and his own forced departure from the leadership in 1967, a very public drama that divided his party and riveted the nation. When Diefenbaker died in 1979, he was given a state funeral modeled - at his own direction - on those of Churchill and Kennedy. It culminated in a transcontinental train journey and burial on the bluffs overlooking Saskatoon, alongside the archive that houses his papers - the only presidential-style library built for a Canadian prime minister. Canadians embraced the image of Dief as a morally triumphant underdog, even as they were repelled by his outrageous excesses. He revived a moribund party and gave the country a fresh sense of purpose but he was no match for the dilemmas of the Cold War of Quebec nationalism, or the subtleties of the country’s relations with the United States. This compelling biography, illuminating both legend and man and the nation he helped shape, was among the most highly praised books of the year.

Book Synopsis Language and Its Functions by : Pieter Adrianus Verburg
Download or read book Language and Its Functions written by Pieter Adrianus Verburg and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Pieter Verburg (1905-1989) published Taal en Functionaliteit in 1952, the work was received with admiration by linguistic scholars, though the number of those who could read the Dutch text for themselves remained limited. The title alludes to the theories of linguistic function set out in 1936 by Karl Bühler, but Verburg regards the three functions of discourse focussing respectively on the speaker, the person addressed and the matter discussed as no more than sub-functions of the human function of speech. His central concern is to explore the relationships between thought and language, and language and reality; and the work sets out to provide a historical analysis of views on these relationships in the period 1100 to 1800. The great strength of the work lies in the way in which the views of language are related to contemporaneous moves in philosophy and science, contrasting essentially the mediaeval acceptance of authority, the beginnings of induction in the Renaissance, the dependence of early rationalism on calculation based on axiomatic truths, and the further development of independent observation. All these trends are reflected in the way men thought about language, as well as in the way they used it. Much has been written on the history of linguistics since this book was written, but it still offers a unique view of the development of thinking about language.
