Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Antenna design has grown more stringent and difficult over the years as the world becomes strictly a wireless environment. The inherent tradeoffs that exist between gain, radiation pattern, bandwidth, and physical size and the multiple parameters that must be considered make antenna design a lengthy and tedious process. Methods have been devised which automate this complex process of antenna optimization through the use of genetic algorithms, particle swarm optimization, and simulated annealing. Genetic algorithms are capable of handling a large number of design parameters and work for optimization problems that have discontinuous or non-differentiable multi-dimensional solution spaces, making them ideal for antenna optimization. In the present work, a genetic algorithm has been used for size reduction in microstrip patch antennas and design tradeoff optimization between beamwidth and gain in helical antennas. A method for reducing the size of microstrip patch antennas by up to 75% by removing rectangular and circular slots from the metal of the microstrip patch is presented. A solid patch antenna that resonates at 10 GHz is forced to resonant at 6 GHz through the removal of the different shaped slots. Given the number and shape of the slots, the genetic algorithm is used to optimize the size and location of the slot on the patch. The designs are obtained by interfacing the genetic algorithm and Ansoft High Frequency System Simulator (HFSS) and validated through design, construction, and testing. High gain, with broad half-power beamwidths (HPBW) is traditionally extremely difficult to achieve due to the inherent tradeoff between the two. A genetic algorithm has been applied to design a helical antenna with a gain of 10 dB and HPBWs of 60 degrees. In order to achieve this, three physical parameters of the helix have been changed, namely the pitch, helix radius, and the ground plane geometry. The second objective is to create an antenna that displays different HPBWs in the two radiation planes. This could be extremely useful in many communication environments and there is yet no existing method to achieve this. The genetic algorithm produced a helical antenna that shows a 19 degrees difference in HPBW between the two radiation planes, while still displaying a 7 dB gain and low side lobes. Numerical Electromagnetic Code 4 (NEC4) is used, and a method of communication between MATLAB and NEC4 has been developed to make the genetic algorithm optimization possible"--Abstract.

Book excerpt: A Genetic Algorithm (GA) has been used in conjunction with the Numerical Electromagnetics Code, Version 2 (NEC2) to create and optimize atypical wire antenna designs with impressive characteristics. Antenna design parameters are encoded into an ordered series of numbers and/or symbols analogous to a biological chromosome. A cost function that quantifies how well a design meets the engineer's specifications is created. The GA uses these to generate and evaluate a population of designs. The most successful designs are then promoted and mixed through mating and mutation, while poor designs are removed. This process, difficult to trap in local minima, continues until convergence criteria are met, generally yielding excellent designs with no user intervention or initial guesses. Three antennas have been optimized: a monopole loaded with a modified folded dipole, the Yagi antenna, and the crooked-wire genetic antenna. Prior study of the loaded monopole had shown hemispherical coverage was possible. The GA found an asymmetric loaded monopole with an average variation in gain over the hemisphere of only 0.4dB, confirmed by measurement. GA-optimized Yagi antennas surpassed the gain of conventional Yagis by about 1dB, improvement also confirmed by measurement. The GA designed a Yagi with a beamwidth of 50 deg -60 deg, sidelobes nearly 25dB down, and a 14% bandwidth-specifications difficult to achieve using conventional techniques. The crooked-wire genetic antenna is several wires joined in series; locations and lengths are determined by the GA. Optimization for hemispherical coverage with right-hand circular polarization (RHCP) produced highly unusual shapes unrealizable using a conventional approach. RHCP hemispherical coverage was achieved with less than 4dB variation. Measurements verify the results.

Book excerpt: The objectives of this research work are to investigate, design and implement active integrated antennas comprising active devices connected directly to the patch radiators, for various applications in high efficiency RF front-ends, integrated oscillator antennas, design and optimization of harmonic suppression antennas using a genetic algorithm (GA). A computer-aided design approach to obtain a class F operation to optimizing the optimal fundamental load impedance and designing the input matching circuits for an active integrated antenna of the transmitting type is proposed and a case study of a design for 1.6 GHz is used to confirm the design principle. A study of active integrated oscillator antennas with a series feed back using a pseudomorphic high electronmobility transistor (PHEMT) confirms the design procedure in simulation and measurement for the oscillator circuit connected directly to the active antenna. Subsequently, another design of active oscillator antenna using bipolar junction transistor (BJT) improves the phase noise of the oscillation and in addition to achieve amplitude shift keying (ASK) and amplitude modulation (AM) modulation using the proposed design circuit. Moreover, the possibility of using a sensor patch technique to find the power accepted by the antenna at harmonic frequencies is studied. A novel numerical solution, for designing and optimizing active patch antennas for harmonic suppression using GA in collaboration with numerical electromagnetic computation (NEC), is presented. A new FORTRAN program is developed and used for adaptively meshing any planar antenna structure in terms of wire grid surface structures. The program is subsequently implemented in harmonic suppression antenna design and optimization using GA. The simulation and measurement results for several surface structures show a good agreement.

Book excerpt: In this paper, we describe how to apply genetic algorithm (GA) optimization techniques to two diverse antenna optimization problems: electrically-small bent-wire antennas and a digital ionosonde transmit antenna. For each of these we present a description of the problem and one or more ways in which it can be modeled for genetic algorithm optimization. The goal of this paper is not to present optimal results for each of these antenna design areas, but rather to illustrate how antenna optimization problems can be translated into chromosome representations for genetic algorithm optimization. Lessons learned from using different chromosome representations are presented, along with simulated and measured results as available.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis investigates the novel idea of using evolutionary algorithms to optimisecontrol and design aspects of active array antenna systems. Active arrays differ frommost mechanically scanned antennas in that they offer the ability to control the shape oftheir radiation pattern. As active arrays consist of a multiplicity of transmit and receivemodules (TRMs), the task of optimally controlling them in order to generate a desiredradiation pattern becomes difficult. The control problem is especially true of conformal(non-planar) array antennas that require additional phase control to achieve goodradiation pattern performance. This thesis describes a number of significant advances in the optimisation of arrayantenna performance. Firstly a genetic algorithm (GA) is shown to be effective atoptimising both planar and conformal antenna performance. A number of examples areused to illustrate and promote the basic optimisation concept. Secondly, in this thesisthe techniques are advanced to apply multiobjective evolutionary optimisationalgorithms to array performance optimisation. It is shown that Evolutionary Algorithmsallow users to simultaneously optimise many aspects of array performance without theneed to fine-tune a large number of weights. The multiple-objective analysis methodsshown demonstrate the advantages to be gained by holding knowledge of the Paretooptimal solution set. Thirdly, this thesis examines the problems of optimising the design of large (manyelement) array antennas. Larger arrays are often divided into smaller sub-arrays formanufacturing reasons and to promote formation of difference beam patterns formonopulse operation. In the past, the partitioning has largely been left to trial-and-erroror simple randomisation techniques. This thesis describes a new and novel approach foroptimally subdividing both planar and conformal array antennas as well as improvinggain patterns in a single optimisation process. This approach contains a new method ofpartitioning array antennas, inspired from a biological process and is also presented andoptimised using evolutionary algorithms. Additionally, the technique can be applied toany size or shape of array antenna, with the processing load dependent on the number ofsubarrays, rather than the number of elements. Finally, the success of these new techniques is demonstrated by presenting a range ofperformance optimised examples of planar and conformal array antenna installationsincluding examples of optimally evolved subarray partitions.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are a growing number of ultra-wideband applications, which involve the radiation or reception of electromagnetic signals over frequency bandwidths ranging from 1.3:1 to over 10:1. In the design of antennas for ultra-wideband systems, many design objectives must be considered, including impedance matching, radiation efficiency, radiation pattern stability, size, and possibly impulse response. Given the very wide bandwidths considered, it can be challenging to meet all objectives simultaneously, and optimization techniques are useful to achieve a reasonable compromise between objectives. In this dissertation, multi-objective Genetic Algorithm (GA) optimization is used to design ultra-wideband antennas for use in wireless communications and low frequency radio astronomy. GA optimization is first applied to the design of ultra-wide bandwidth planar monopole antennas, which exhibit a narrow-band frequency notch in order to mitigate interference with co-located radio systems. The GA optimizer uses a weighted sum cost function related to impedance matching and radiation patterns at frequencies within both the wide operating band and the narrow notch band to improve antenna performance. A two-dimensional matrix chromosome is used in the GA to represent a wide-range on planar element shapes. It is shown that the GA generates antenna designs which exhibit wideband performance equal to traditional band-notched designs, but have improved azimuth plane radiation pattern symmetry, which widens the effective notch bandwidth. Pareto GA optimization is then applied to the design of planar dipole antenna elements operating over a ground plane for use in a low frequency radio telescope array. The objectives considered include Galactic background or "sky noise reception level, and radiation patterns over the operating band of 20 to 80 MHz. It is demonstrated that the Pareto GA approach generates a set of designs, which exhibit a wide range of trade-offs between the two design objectives, and satisfy all applied geometrical constraints. Multiple GA executions are performed to determine how antenna performance trade-offs are affected by different geometrical constraint values, feed impedance values, radiating element shapes and orientations, and ground conditions. In a follow-up to the previous study, the effects of mutual coupling in a low frequency radio telescope array are considered. It is first shown that a simple receive-based definition of coupling between two antennas can be used to design antenna elements which exhibit reduced mutual coupling effects when operated in a large phased array. This result is utilized in order to perform Pareto GA optimization of wire frame bow-tie dipole elements in terms of mutual coupling, as well as sky noise response and radiation patterns over the 20 to 80 MHz band. The GA generates a set of designs that span a wide range of objective values. The results are analyzed to understand the trade-offs that may be made between the three objectives.

Book excerpt: Over the past decade, the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) antenna Technology Branch at Hanscom AFB has employed the simple genetic algorithm (SGA) as an optimization tool for a wide variety of antenna applications. Over roughly the same period, researchers at the Illinois Genetic Algorithm Laboratory (IlliGAL) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have developed GA design theory and advanced GA techniques called competent genetic algorithms that solve hard problems quickly, reliably, and accurately. Recently, under the guidance and direction of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), the two laboratories have formed a collaboration, the common goal of which is to apply simple, competent, and hybrid GA techniques to challenging antenna problems. This paper is composed of two parts. The first part of this paper summarizes previous research conducted by AFRL at Hanscom for which SGAs were implemented to obtain acceptable solutions to several antenna problems. The second part of this paper starts by briefly reviewing the design theory and design principles necessary for the invention and implementation of fast, scalable genetic algorithms. A particular procedure, the hierarchical Bayesian optimization algorithm (hBOA) is then briefly outlined, and the remainder of the paper describes collaborative efforts of AFRL and IlliGAL to solve more difficult antenna problems.
