Book Synopsis Review of Progress in Quantitative Nondestructive Evaluation by : Donald O. Thompson
Download or read book Review of Progress in Quantitative Nondestructive Evaluation written by Donald O. Thompson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to increase the understanding of damage in composite materials with through-the-thickness reinforcements. As a first step it was necessary to develop new ultrasonic imaging technology to better assess internal damage of the composite. A useful ultrasonic imaging technique has been successfully developed to assess the internal damage of composite panels. The ultrasonic technique accurately determines the size of the internal damage. It was found that the ultrasonic imaging technique was better able to assess the damage in a composite panel with through-the-thickness reinforcements than by destructively sectioning the specimen and visual inspection under a microscope. Microscopic determination of crack location and lengths in a composite panel with through-the-thickness reinforcements was almost impossible. Five composite compression-after-impact panels were tested. The compression-after-impact strength of the panels with the through-the thickness reinforcements was almost twice that of the comparable panel without through-the-thickness reinforcement. Book Synopsis Wavelet and Wave Analysis as Applied to Materials with Micro Or Nanostructure by : Carlo Cattani
Download or read book Wavelet and Wave Analysis as Applied to Materials with Micro Or Nanostructure written by Carlo Cattani and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2007 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This seminal book unites three different areas of modern science: the micromechanics and nanomechanics of composite materials; wavelet analysis as applied to physical problems; and the propagation of a new type of solitary wave in composite materials, nonlinear waves. Each of the three areas is described in a simple and understandable form, focusing on the many perspectives of the links among the three. All of the techniques and procedures are described here in the clearest and most open form, enabling the reader to quickly learn and use them when faced with the new and more advanced problems that are proposed in this book. By combining these new scientific concepts into a unitary model and enlightening readers on this pioneering field of research, readers will hopefully be inspired to explore the more advanced aspects of this promising scientific direction. The application of wavelet analysis to nanomaterials and waves in nanocomposites can be very appealing to both specialists working on theoretical developments in wavelets as well as specialists applying these methods and experiments in the mechanics of materials.
Book Synopsis Ultrasonic Guided Waves in Solid Media by : Joseph L. Rose
Download or read book Ultrasonic Guided Waves in Solid Media written by Joseph L. Rose and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-08-11 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultrasonic guided waves in solid media have become a critically important subject in nondestructive testing and structural health monitoring, as new faster, more sensitive, and more economical ways of looking at materials and structures have become possible. This book will lead to fresh creative ideas for use in new inspection procedures. Although the mathematics is sometimes sophisticated, the book can also be read by managers without detailed understanding of the concepts as it can be read from a 'black box' point of view. Overall, the material presented on wave mechanics - in particular, guided wave mechanics - establishes a framework for the creative data collection and signal processing needed to solve many problems using ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation and structural health monitoring. The book can be used as a reference in ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation by professionals and as a textbook for seniors and graduate students. This work extends the coverage of Rose's earlier book Ultrasonic Waves in Solid Media.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New applications for composite materials are being developed at a rapid pace. However, their complex microstructures present considerable challenges for nondestructive testing and characterization. Ultrasonic waves provide quantitative means of nondestructive evaluation of these materials and structures. For this purpose, it is necessary to obtain
Book Synopsis Metal and Ceramic Based Composites by : S.T. Mileiko
Download or read book Metal and Ceramic Based Composites written by S.T. Mileiko and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1997-12-12 with total page 705 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern scientific and technological fields are frequently of an interdisciplinary nature, and the field of fibrous composites is no exception. Unlike fibre-reinforced plastics, the family of metal- and ceramic-based composites is still quite a new group of materials with a large variety of mechanical and physical properties. Up until now it has been difficult to produce these materials as the necessary technical information has not been well documented. The main purpose of this book is to link together fabrication, structure and properties chains, so as to clarify which structure provides the necessary properties, and how one can attain the correct composite structure. To this end, the book not only contains topics of a purely technical nature, but also a description of the failure mechanics of metal- and ceramic-matrix composites, as this is the key to understanding the structure-properties segment of the chain mentioned. The book is divided into three parts. Part I presents a general view of composites with the accent on metal- and ceramic-matrix composites. It also contains a brief description of modern fibres and composites and can be considered, at least for beginners, as a starting point for further study. Part II looks at the composite microstructures considered to be either optimal or reasonable in resisting a particular loading. Finally Part II describes a variety of mechanical, physical, and chemical potential for organizing these microstructures. Experimental data on technologies, material structures, and material properties are used throughout the book to support theoretical conclusions or to obtain important physical parameters.

Book Synopsis Mechanics Today by : S. Nemat-Nasser
Download or read book Mechanics Today written by S. Nemat-Nasser and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanics Today, Volume 3 provides the advances in the fields of solid and fluid mechanics and applied mathematics. This volume is divided into six chapters that discuss the fundamentals and analytical and experimental results of dynamic behavior of linear and nonlinear systems. Chapter I provides a formulation of the effective stiffness theory with equations of motion and boundary conditions presented for the case of plain strain motion. Chapter II summarizes some of the analytical results that have been obtained in an effort to improve understanding of elastodynamic fracture processes. Chapter III presents the matrix difference equations used to formulate problems related to random vibration of periodic and almost periodic structures, taking advantage of the identical construction of the interconnecting units. Chapter IV describes a basic approach to the Oseen problem through the use of integral representations of the velocity and pressure fields. Chapter V deals with an analysis of nonlinear gyroscopic systems and the motions of high-order nongyroscopic systems. Chapter VI focuses on the application of the WKB perturbation method in the study of static deformation, vibration, wave propagation, and instability of elastic bodies. This volume is of great value to solid and fluid mechanics specialists and also to non-specialists with sufficient background of the field.
