Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains articles based on talks given at the Robert Brooks Memorial Conference on Geometry and Spectral Theory and the Workshop on Groups, Geometry and Dynamics held at Technion - the Israel Institute of Technology (Haifa). Robert Brooks' (1952 - 2002) broad range of mathematical interests is represented in the volume, which is devoted to various aspects of global analysis, spectral theory, the theory of Riemann surfaces, Riemannian and discrete geometry, and numbertheory. A survey of Brooks' work has been written by his close colleague, Peter Buser. Also included in the volume are articles on analytic topics, such as Szego's theorem, and on geometric topics, such as isoperimetric inequalities and symmetries of manifolds. The book is suitable for graduate studentsand researchers interested in various aspects of geometry and global analysis.

Download or read book Means and Their Inequalities written by P.S. Bullen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approach your problems from the right end It isn't !hat they can't see the solution. It is and begin with the answers. Then one day, that they can't see the problem. perhaps you will find the final question. G. K. Chesterton. The Scandal 0/ Fa/her 'The Hermit Oad in Crane Feathers' in R. Brown 'The point of a Pin'. van GuJik's The Chinese Maze Murders. Growing specialization and diversification have brought a host of monographs and textbooks on increasingly specialized topics. However, the "tree" of knowledge of mathematics and related fie1ds does not grow only by putting forth new branches. It also happens, quite often in fact, that branches which were thought to be completely disparate are suddenly seen to be related. Further, the kind and level of sophistication of mathematics applied in various sciences has changed drastically in recent years: measure theory is used (non-trivially) in regional and theoretical economics; algebraic geometry interacts with physics; the Minkowsky lemma, coding theory and the structure of water meet one another in packing and covering theory; quantum fields, crystal defects and mathematical programming profit from homotopy theory; Lie algebras are relevant to filtering; and prediction and electrical engineering can use Stein spaces. And in addition to this there are such new emerging subdisciplines as "experimental mathematics", "CFD", "complete1y integrable systems", "chaos, synergetics and large-scale order", which are almost impossible to fit into the existing c1assification schemes. They draw upon wide1y different sections of mathematics.

Book Synopsis Analytic Inequalities by : Dragoslav S. Mitrinovic
Download or read book Analytic Inequalities written by Dragoslav S. Mitrinovic and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Theory of Inequalities began its development from the time when C. F. GACSS, A. L. CATCHY and P. L. CEBYSEY, to mention only the most important, laid the theoretical foundation for approximative meth ods. Around the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, numerous inequalities were proyed, some of which became classic, while most remained as isolated and unconnected results. It is almost generally acknowledged that the classic work "Inequali ties" by G. H. HARDY, J. E. LITTLEWOOD and G. POLYA, which appeared in 1934, transformed the field of inequalities from a collection of isolated formulas into a systematic discipline. The modern Theory of Inequalities, as well as the continuing and growing interest in this field, undoubtedly stem from this work. The second English edition of this book, published in 1952, was unchanged except for three appendices, totalling 10 pages, added at the end of the book. Today inequalities playa significant role in all fields of mathematics, and they present a very active and attractive field of research. J. DIEUDONNE, in his book "Calcullnfinitesimal" (Paris 1968), attri buted special significance to inequalities, adopting the method of exposi tion characterized by "majorer, minorer, approcher". Since 1934 a multitude of papers devoted to inequalities have been published: in some of them new inequalities were discovered, in others classical inequalities ,vere sharpened or extended, various inequalities ,vere linked by finding their common source, while some other papers gave a large number of miscellaneous applications.

Book Synopsis Classical and New Inequalities in Analysis by : Dragoslav S. Mitrinovic
Download or read book Classical and New Inequalities in Analysis written by Dragoslav S. Mitrinovic and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 739 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a comprehensive compendium of classical and new inequalities as well as some recent extensions to well-known ones. Variations of inequalities ascribed to Abel, Jensen, Cauchy, Chebyshev, Hölder, Minkowski, Stefferson, Gram, Fejér, Jackson, Hardy, Littlewood, Po'lya, Schwarz, Hadamard and a host of others can be found in this volume. The more than 1200 cited references include many from the last ten years which appear in a book for the first time. The 30 chapters are all devoted to inequalities associated with a given classical inequality, or give methods for the derivation of new inequalities. Anyone interested in equalities, from student to professional, will find their favorite inequality and much more.

Book Synopsis On the Problem of Plateau / Subharmonic Functions by : T. Rado
Download or read book On the Problem of Plateau / Subharmonic Functions written by T. Rado and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A convex function f may be called sublinear in the following sense; if a linear function l is ::=: j at the boundary points of an interval, then l:> j in the interior of that interval also. If we replace the terms interval and linear junction by the terms domain and harmonic function, we obtain a statement which expresses the characteristic property of subharmonic functions of two or more variables. This ge neralization, formulated and developed by F. RIEsz, immediately at tracted the attention of many mathematicians, both on account of its intrinsic interest and on account of the wide range of its applications. If f (z) is an analytic function of the complex variable z = x + i y. then If (z) I is subharmonic. The potential of a negative mass-distribu tion is subharmonic. In differential geometry, surfaces of negative curvature and minimal surfaces can be characterized in terms of sub harmonic functions. The idea of a subharmonic function leads to significant applications and interpretations in the fields just referred to, and· conversely, every one of these fields is an apparently in exhaustible source of new theorems on subharmonic functions, either by analogy or by direct implication.
