Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work, first published in 1995, presents developments in understanding the subdominant exponential terms of asymptotic expansions which have previously been neglected. By considering special exponential series arising in number theory, the authors derive the generalised Euler-Jacobi series, expressed in terms of hypergeometric series. Dingle's theory of terminants is then employed to show how the divergences in both dominant and subdominant series of a complete asymptotic expansion can be tamed. Numerical results are used to illustrate that a complete asymptotic expansion can be made to agree with exact results for the generalised Euler-Jacobi series to any desired degree of accuracy. All researchers interested in the fascinating area of exponential asymptotics will find this a most valuable book.

Book Synopsis Second Order Partial Differential Equations in Hilbert Spaces by : Giuseppe Da Prato
Download or read book Second Order Partial Differential Equations in Hilbert Spaces written by Giuseppe Da Prato and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-07-25 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Second order linear parabolic and elliptic equations arise frequently in mathematics and other disciplines. For example parabolic equations are to be found in statistical mechanics and solid state theory, their infinite dimensional counterparts are important in fluid mechanics, mathematical finance and population biology, whereas nonlinear parabolic equations arise in control theory. Here the authors present a state of the art treatment of the subject from a new perspective. The main tools used are probability measures in Hilbert and Banach spaces and stochastic evolution equations. There is then a discussion of how the results in the book can be applied to control theory. This area is developing very rapidly and there are numerous notes and references that point the reader to more specialised results not covered in the book. Coverage of some essential background material will help make the book self-contained and increase its appeal to those entering the subject.
Book Synopsis Character Theory for the Odd Order Theorem by : Thomas Peterfalvi
Download or read book Character Theory for the Odd Order Theorem written by Thomas Peterfalvi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-02-28 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The famous and important theorem of W. Feit and J. G. Thompson states that every group of odd order is solvable, and the proof of this has roughly two parts. The first part appeared in Bender and Glauberman's Local Analysis for the Odd Order Theorem which was number 188 in this series. This book provides the character-theoretic second part and thus completes the proof. All researchers in group theory should have a copy of this book in their library.
Book Synopsis Solving Transcendental Equations by : John P. Boyd
Download or read book Solving Transcendental Equations written by John P. Boyd and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2014-09-23 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transcendental equations arise in every branch of science and engineering. While most of these equations are easy to solve, some are not, and that is where this book serves as the mathematical equivalent of a skydiver's reserve parachute--not always needed, but indispensible when it is. The author's goal is to teach the art of finding the root of a single algebraic equation or a pair of such equations.

Book Synopsis Asymptotics and Mellin-Barnes Integrals by : R. B. Paris
Download or read book Asymptotics and Mellin-Barnes Integrals written by R. B. Paris and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-09-24 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asymptotics and Mellin-Barnes Integrals, first published in 2001, provides an account of the use and properties of a type of complex integral representation that arises frequently in the study of special functions typically of interest in classical analysis and mathematical physics. After developing the properties of these integrals, their use in determining the asymptotic behaviour of special functions is detailed. Although such integrals have a long history, the book's account includes recent research results in analytic number theory and hyperasymptotics. The book also fills a gap in the literature on asymptotic analysis and special functions by providing a thorough account of the use of Mellin-Barnes integrals that is otherwise not available in other standard references on asymptotics.
Book Synopsis The Stokes Phenomenon, Borel Summation and Mellin-Barnes Regularisation by : Victor Kowalenko
Download or read book The Stokes Phenomenon, Borel Summation and Mellin-Barnes Regularisation written by Victor Kowalenko and published by Bentham Science Publishers. This book was released on 2009 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Stokes phenomenon refers to the emergence of jump discontinuities in asymptotic expansions at specific rays in the complex plane. This book presents a radical theory for the phenomenon by introducing the concept of regularization. Two methods of regularization, Borel summation and Mellin-Barnes regularization, are used to derive general expressions for the regularized values of asymptotic expansions throughout the complex plane. Though different, both yield identical values, which, where possible, agree with the original functions. Consequently, asymptotics has been elevated to a true disc

Book Synopsis Lectures on Invariant Theory by : Igor Dolgachev
Download or read book Lectures on Invariant Theory written by Igor Dolgachev and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-08-07 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary goal of this 2003 book is to give a brief introduction to the main ideas of algebraic and geometric invariant theory. It assumes only a minimal background in algebraic geometry, algebra and representation theory. Topics covered include the symbolic method for computation of invariants on the space of homogeneous forms, the problem of finite-generatedness of the algebra of invariants, the theory of covariants and constructions of categorical and geometric quotients. Throughout, the emphasis is on concrete examples which originate in classical algebraic geometry. Based on lectures given at University of Michigan, Harvard University and Seoul National University, the book is written in an accessible style and contains many examples and exercises. A novel feature of the book is a discussion of possible linearizations of actions and the variation of quotients under the change of linearization. Also includes the construction of toric varieties as torus quotients of affine spaces.
Book Synopsis Corings and Comodules by : Tomasz Brzezinski
Download or read book Corings and Comodules written by Tomasz Brzezinski and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-09-15 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first extensive treatment of the theory of corings and their comodules. In the first part, the module-theoretic aspects of coalgebras over commutative rings are described. Corings are then defined as coalgebras over non-commutative rings. Topics covered include module-theoretic aspects of corings, such as the relation of comodules to special subcategories of the category of modules (sigma-type categories), connections between corings and extensions of rings, properties of new examples of corings associated to entwining structures, generalisations of bialgebras such as bialgebroids and weak bialgebras, and the appearance of corings in non-commutative geometry.
