The translation has been made with his consent and active cooperation and thus really constitutes a fourth edition. When the "Lehrbuch" was prepared, the author did not contemplate the contingency of a separate publication of the General Part, but it is believed that his masterly treatment of the larger generalizations of the subject will be of service by itself to teacher, student, and general reader. The term "Anlage" has been rendered "rudiment," in the sense that rudimentary organs are such as are in process of development. Conversely, organs in process of disappearance are termed "vestigeal organs." The adjective "vegetal," as corresponding with "animal," has been used in preference to "vegetative"; e.g., the vegetal and the animal pole of the egg. It is too much to hope that errors have not crept in, and as the most satisfactory text-books result from the cooperation of many workers, the editor invites such corrections and suggestions as may tend to widen the usefulness of the work. In reading proof much assistance has been given by Miss Ada G. Wing, a graduate student of Biology in Brown University, and to her the translator is indebted for many valuable suggestions. The epidermis of the skin is composed of cells of the same general kind grouped together; it is therefore a tissue. Muscle and bone are tissues, as are also tendons, many glands, and the components of the nervous system. Cytology, contrariwise, is concerned with the minute components of cells, the parts of the nucleus, the minute structure of the living matter, the nature of cell organs, and the like. Embryology has to do with the young or developmental stages of animals. When it is purely descriptive, dealing only with the structures of these young stages, not with the processes going on in them, it is morphological in its nature. In creating subdivisions of zoology, the several morphological branches mentioned in the preceding paragraphs have occasionally been elevated to equal rank with the divisions described below; but Since they do not differ in principle, all being concerned with structure, it seems better to combine all of them under the Single head, morphology. They are composed of few chemical elements, of which carbon, hydro gen, oxygen, and nitrogen, are the most important; and these elements are combined to form complex organic compounds, which always contain a large proportion of water, are very nu stable, and are prone to spontaneous decomposition. 6. They are composed of diverse or heterogeneous parts, which have usually more or less definite relations to one another. These heterogeneous but related parts are termed organs, and the objects possessing them are said to be organized. Some of the lowest forms of animals have bodies composed of so uni form a substance that they cannot be said to be organized, as they exhibit no definite organs. This exception, however, does not affect the general value of this distinction. 0. They are always more or less definite in shape, presenting concave and convex surfaces, and being bounded by curved lines. 07. When they increase in size, or grow, they do so, not by the addi tion of particles from the outside, but by the reception of foreign matter into their interior and its assimilation there (technically called intussusception e. They invariably pass through certain periodic changes in a definite and dis coverable order; these changes constituting life. They are subject to the same physical and chemical laws as those which govern dead matter, but the living body is the seat of some thing in virtue of which it can override the physical laws which enslave mere dead matter. The living body, so long as it is a living body, is the seat of energy, and can overcome the primary law of the inertia of matter. It has certain relations with the outer world other than the merely passive ones of dead matter. However humble it may be, and even if it be permanently rooted to one place, some part or other of every living body possesses the power of spontaneous and inde pendent motionma power possessed by nothing that is dead. In the higher animals the relations of the living body to dead nature become still further complicated, and their mastery over the physical forces becomes more and more pronounced.
