Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is draw attention to little known or unknown Netherlandish paintings of the 16th century preserved in Slovak art collections. In the foreword the author gives an overview of the history of art collecting within present day Slovakia. The remarkable art collections of Prince Albert, Duke of Sachsen-Teschen, Count János Pálffy, Enea Grazioso Lanfranconi and Baron Raoul Kuffner, among others, are treated here in detail. The collection of 31 paintings is examined in the form of a scholaly catalogue. The author gives carefully formulated assessments about the provenance, iconography, attribution and the date of every work. Moreover, a useful survey of the opinions given in earlier publications, many of them inaccessible due to the language barrier, is included. The paintings by Colijn de Coter, Albrecht Bouts, Gillis Coignet and the fine paintings by Lucas, Marten, Frederik and Gillis Valckenborch for example, are comprehensively presented to the reader. Indubitably, art professionals will welcome the publication as a valuable reference handbook. The book will also be very useful to visitors to the Slovak galleries and museums.
Download or read book Jordaens written by Zita Pataki and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 16 essays by a group of internationally acclaimed authors help contribute to a clearer perception of the complex facets of Jacob Jordaens' oeuvre—and moreover to distinguish it from the works of Rubens, van Dyck, and his contemporaries. The title "Genius of Grand Scale" refers to the spectrum from history to genre as well as to Jordaens' preference for large formats. The greatness of the artist Jacob Jordaens needs to be emphasized, since even though he outlived Rubens for four whole decades, he was never able to escape from under his shadow. By reference to iconographic and iconological studies, single works are identified and presented in a broad review and the long, in many aspects fragmentary reception of his artistic work also forms a large part of the interpretations presented here. Furthermore, technical examinations of paintings assist in defining more precisely how they were generated. This overdue volume presents essential reading for anyone interested in Jacob Jordaens.
Book Synopsis Albrecht Dürer and the Embodiment of Genius by : Jeffrey Chipps Smith
Download or read book Albrecht Dürer and the Embodiment of Genius written by Jeffrey Chipps Smith and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2021-05-28 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the nineteenth century, Albrecht Dürer’s art, piety, and personal character were held up as models to inspire contemporary artists and—it was hoped—to return Germany to international artistic eminence. In this book, Jeffrey Chipps Smith explores Dürer’s complex posthumous reception during the great century of museum building in Europe, with a particular focus on the artist’s role as a creative and moral exemplar for German artists and museum visitors. In an era when museums were emerging as symbols of civic, regional, and national identity, dozens of new national, princely, and civic museums began to feature portraits of Dürer in their elaborate decorative programs embellishing the facades, grand staircases, galleries, and ceremonial spaces. Most of these arose in Germany and Austria, though examples can be seen as far away as St. Petersburg, Stockholm, London, and New York City. Probing the cultural, political, and educational aspirations and rivalries of these museums and their patrons, Smith traces how Dürer was painted, sculpted, and prominently placed to accommodate the era’s diverse needs and aspirations. He investigates what these portraits can tell us about the rise of a distinct canon of famous Renaissance and Baroque artists—addressing the question of why Dürer was so often paired with Raphael, who was considered to embody the greatness of Italian art—and why, with the rise of German nationalism, Hans Holbein the Younger often replaced Raphael as Dürer’s partner. Accessibly written and comprehensive in scope, this book sheds new light on museum building in the nineteenth century and the rise of art history as a discipline. It will appeal to specialists in nineteenth-century and early modern art, the history of museums and collecting, and art historiography.
