Book excerpt: The Dutch history painter Joachim Wtewael is widely admired for his astonishing small paintings on copper. The Getty Museum's Mars and Venus Surprised by Vulcan is one of his finest works in this unusually demanding medium. Though only eight inches high, this Mannerist painting contains eleven figures in three different spaces, captured in a dramatically charged moment from the famous story told by Ovid in his Metamorphoses. The author's detailed analysis of Wtewael's painting also serves as a fine introduction to Dutch art of the Golden Age. Illustrated with seventy reproductions of paintings, drawings, etchings, and decorative objects, Anne W. Lowenthal's study ranges over the broad historical and cultural context in which Mars and Venus was created.

Book excerpt: Shortly before November 1636, Rubens received the commission from Philip IV of Spain to supply more than sixty paintings with mythological subjects for his new hunting lodge, the Torre de la Parada. In about one and a half years, the enormous task was completed. The pictures had been painted partly by Rubens himself, partly from his designs by a number of collaborators, among them Cornelis de Vos, Jacob Jordaens, Theodoor van Thulden and Erasmus Quellinus. Today, forty of these paintings, more than fifty of Rubens's brilliant sketches and a few preparatory drawings survive. Together with three never previously published eighteenth-century inventories of the Torre de La Parada, they have provided the material for the new analysis of the series.

Book excerpt: Hans Memling was the leading painter in Bruges during the last quarter of the fifteenth century, receiving commissions from patrons in England, Germany and Italy as well as Flanders itself. For the Romantics of the nineteenth century, he ranked even above Jan van Eyck as the greatest of the Flemish primitives. By the middle of the twentieth century, however, his exalted reputation had declined sharply under the shadow of his presumed teacher, Rogier van der Weyden. In 1953, Panofsky labelled Memling a major minor master, leading subsequent writers to consider him unworthy of serious study. It was only in 1994, the five-hundredth anniversary of his death, that the major exhibition on Memling in Bruges launched a veritable flood of publications on his life and work, finally granting him the recognition he deserves. This book contributes to the ongoing reappraisal of Memling by addressing some of the tantalizing problems that remain unresolved despite much recent study of his work. Beginning with the question of his training, the text follows him on his Wanderjahre from his native Germany to Bruges, where he became a citizen in 1465. It then considers his activities as a master painter in Bruges, concentrating on the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, including the work of such major artists as Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the first seventy years of the seventeenth century the Dutch town of Delft emerged as one of the most important artistic centers in the Netherlands. Although famous as the birthplace of the painter Johannes Vermeer, Delft was also home to an extended community of masters that included among many others Pieter de Hooch and Carel Fabritius. In this introduction to the key Delft artists, Axel Rüger places Vermeer’s masterpieces within their historical and artistic context. This book, accompanying a major loan exhibition at the National Gallery, London, reveals how artistic and cultural developments of the early seventeenth century paved the way for the flowering of art in the city, culminating in the master works of the 1650s and 1660s. Investigating the artistic production of the city genre by genre, the author builds a picture of the so-called Delft School and its influences. Although painting from this time is probably best known for Vermeer’s serene scenes of everyday life, his contemporaries chose many different subjects. From Vermeer's world-famous masterpieces to the less familiar works of the period, all these refined paintings reflect a powerful sensibility to the visual aspects of the world as their makers perceived it.

Book excerpt: The artist best describes his work "I put on an apron beforehand, of the kind butchers wear in Britain, lest everyday wear hamper me in activity requiring all my skills and capacities but also the luck to succeed at a single stroke. Like a surgeon who must first find within himself the assurance of being able to control what he is bent on undertaking. Before an operation, when homespun logic and routine alone fail to help surmount the crucial moment; one must learn to bring the wonted world of appearances to a standstill." Price $19.95.
