Book Synopsis Gasdynamic Lasers: An Introduction by : John D. Jr. Anderson
Download or read book Gasdynamic Lasers: An Introduction written by John D. Jr. Anderson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gasdynamic Lasers: An Introduction is a 12-chapter introductory text to major development generations of gasdynamic lasers, focusing on their underlying physical and fundamental aspects. The opening chapters discuss the basic detailed physical phenomena that ultimately are responsible for producing gasdynamic laser action and the methods of calculating the performance of these devices. These topics are followed by a chapter on confirmation of the performance calculations through arc and shock tunnel experiments. The discussion then shifts to vibrational relaxation process behind normal shock waves in CO2-N2-He mixtures and assesses their population inversions occurring in the nonequilibrium flow. Other chapters explore the concepts of downstream mixing and optical cavity in gasdynamic lasers, as well as the laser beam extracted from these devices. A systematic study of aerodynamic windows that use supersonic flow across the aperture is presented in the concluding chapters, along with the phenomena associated with gasdynamic laser diffusers. This introductory text will be of great value to professional scientists and engineers, as well as to students and workers in the field who are interested in interdisciplinary applied science.

Book excerpt: This book deals with gasdynamic lasers (GDL)-high-energy sources of co directional radiation. The theory and practice of gasdynamic lasers herent are based on three fields of modern science: quantum electronics, physico chemical kinetics, and gasdynamics. This circumstance has determined the content of this book, which can be divided into two parts. The first four which occupy a considerable part of the book, prepare the reader chapters, for discussing the theoretical and experimental results of up-to-date GDL studies. The necessity of such a presentation is dictated by the fact that gasdynamic lasers can be a subject of interest for readers who are experts one of the mentioned fields, or those who have just begun studying in only GDLs. Such a representation is based on the experience gained by the author over several years in delivering lectures on this subject to students of Moscow State University. These lectures fonned the basis of the book, which can also be used as a text. The basic information on gasdynamic lasers is contained in the last two chapters of the book. These chapters give mathematical models of processes occurring in existing high-energy infrared GDLs (C0 GDLs, carbon monoxide 2 GDLs, etc. ), experimental results for these lasers, and also consider some possible new designs of GDLs. Of greatest interest in this respect are the attempts to create recombination electronic GDLs and plasmadynamic lasers.
Book Synopsis A Computer Program for CO2-N2-H2O Gasdynamic Laser Gain and Maximum Available Power by : Walter J. Glowacki
Download or read book A Computer Program for CO2-N2-H2O Gasdynamic Laser Gain and Maximum Available Power written by Walter J. Glowacki and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Fortran IV computer program is presented for the calculation of small-signal gain and maximum available energy for CO2-N2-H2O gasdynamic lasers. In comparison to an earlier version, the present program contains several computational improvements which result in a dramatic, order-of-magnitude reduction in computation time. These improvements are discussed in detail. (Author).
Book Synopsis A High-pressure Carbon Dioxide Gasdynamic Laser by : Donald M. Kuehn
Download or read book A High-pressure Carbon Dioxide Gasdynamic Laser written by Donald M. Kuehn and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A carbon dioxide gasdynamic laser was operated over a range of reservoir pressure and temperature, test-gas mixture, and nozzle geometry. A significant result is the dominant influence of nozzle geometry on laser power at high pressure. High reservoir pressure can be effectively utilized to increase laser power if nozzle geometry is chosen to efficiently freeze the test gas. Maximum power density increased from 3.3 W/cu cm of optical cavity volume for an inefficient nozzle to 83.4 W/cu cm at 115 atm for a more efficient nozzle. Variation in the composition of the test gas also caused large changes in laser power output. Most notable is the influence of the catalyst (helium or water vapor) that was used to depopulate the lower vibrational state of the carbon dioxide. Water caused an extreme deterioration of laser power at high pressure (100 atm), whereas, at low pressure the laser for the two catalysts approached similar values. It appears that at high pressure the depopulation of the upper laser level of the carbon dioxide by the water predominates over the lower state depopulation, thus destroying the inversion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains eight invited papers and seventy-three contributed papers presented at the Fourth International Symposium on Gas Flow and Chemical Lasers. which was held in Stresa. Italy. from September 13 to 17. 1984. The purpose of the Symposium was to record and discuss current research developments and applications related to high power lasers. Papers were solicited from the entire spectrum of activities, includ ing basic physics, aerothermodynamics, new laser media, laser design, diagnostic techniques, laser propagation. interaction phenom ena, applications. The Symposium was an opportunity for scientists and engineers representing all these disciplines to come together to report their recent work, to exchange ideas and to provide an up-to-date account of international progress in these fields. The contributed papers were reviewed by the members of the Scientific Advisory CoEmittee. who also took responsibility for formulating the program of invited lectures. As editor I wish to express my appreciation and my gratitude to people and organizations that made this Symposium a success: the Members of the Scientific Advisory Committee, the Members of the Local Organizing Committee, the Sponsors and the Symposium Secretary. A grateful acknowledgement is expressed to Dr. M. Sandra Oggiano for assistance in the organization of the Symposium and publication of these proceedings.
