Book excerpt: The Judicial Survivors¿ Annuities System (JSAS) was created in 1956 to provide financial security for the families of deceased fed. judges. It provides benefits to eligible spouses and dependent children of judges who elect coverage within 6 months of taking office, 6 months after getting married, 6 months after being elevated to a higher court, or during an open season authorized by statute. Active and senior judges currently contribute 2.2% of their salaries to JSAS, and retired judges contribute 3.5% of their retirement salaries to JSAS. This report reviews JSAS costs to determine whether the judges¿ contributions fund at least 50% of the plan¿s costs during the previous 3-year period. Charts and tables.

This book was released on 2010-04-30 with total page 762 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most employers know that rewarding their best workers is good business. However, the “return” on such investment is difficult to measure, and wise employers think long and hard about two of their largest expense items – employee benefits and executive compensation. Today in the United States, under the glare of issues raised by the current financial crisis, company-sponsored benefits programs have become mere shadows of what they once were, and executive compensation has come under intense scrutiny to the point where the Treasury Department monitors it at companies receiving federal assistance. In recognition of the growing importance of employee benefits and executive compensation issues, the Center for Labor and Employment Law at New York University School of Law dedicated New York University’s 59th Annual Conference on Labor to an in-depth examination of these topics. This volume of the proceedings of the 2006 conference contains papers presented at that meeting, all here updated to reflect recent developments. It also includes contributions from other practitioners and academics with extensive knowledge and experience in this specialized field of labor and employment law.
Book Synopsis A Government Ill Executed by : Paul C. Light
Download or read book A Government Ill Executed written by Paul C. Light and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-09-30 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The federal government is having increasing difficulty faithfully executing the laws, which is what Alexander Hamilton called “the true test” of a good government. This book diagnoses the symptoms, explains their general causes, and proposes ways to improve the effectiveness of the federal government. Employing Hamilton’s seven measures of an energetic federal service, Paul Light shows how the government is wanting in each measure. After assessing the federal report card, Light offers a comprehensive agenda for reform, including new laws limiting the number of political appointees, reducing the layers of government management, reducing the size of government as its baby-boom employees retire, revitalizing the federal career, and reducing the heavy outsourcing of federal work. Although there are many ways to fix each of the seven problems with government, only a comprehensive agenda will bring the kind of reform needed to reverse the overall erosion of the capacity to faithfully execute all the laws.
