Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Armchair Fiction presents extra large editions of classic mystery-crime double novels. The first novel is the cult favorite, "Gang Moll" by Albert L. Quandt. The slums are full of girls like Lee Sissle--fiery, troublesome girls who want more out of life--but who go about it the wrong way. When the girls at the stocking factory showed Lee how to pick up extra money by stealing nylons, she learned fast--but then got caught and fired. Her landlady promptly threw her out, but Lee was not deserted by the landlady's son, Goosey, who drove trucks for a racketeer. Goosey took Lee to the Vagabond Club where she lived as a member of the gang. This started her life of crime. It took Lee only a short time to discover that a cellar club wasn't for her. Playing men for all they were worth, stirring up desire and trouble wherever she went, Lee continued as a gang moll until an avenging racketeer caught up with her. This double novel's second tale is "Tip Your Hat to Death" by H.B. Hickey. Tom Ritchie was a hard-working investigator for the DA's office, slaving away on a menagerie of routine cases. Then one day the murder case of a lifetime dropped into his lap. It was the gruesome killing of Victor Unger, a seasoned psychiatrist known to have many friends and few enemies. Unger's headless body had been found in an alleyway by two screaming girls. In the spotlight of suspicion were four of the doc's ex-patients, one of whom was married to a wealthy financier who had a bad habit of standing in the way of the cops. But could anyone, including the DA, sew together the scattered clues in such a twisted murder case? Only time would tell, and Tom Ritchie soon found himself under the gun to figure out the who, the when, and the why of it all before someone got away with murder.
Download or read book Go Down Together written by Jeff Guinn and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-12-25 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the moment they first cut a swathe of crime across 1930s America, Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker have been glamorised in print, on screen and in legend. The reality of their brief and catastrophic lives is very different -- and far more fascinating. Combining exhaustive research with surprising, newly discovered material, author Jeff Guinn tells the real story of two youngsters from a filthy Dallas slum who fell in love and then willingly traded their lives for a brief interlude of excitement and, more important, fame. Thanks in great part to surviving relatives of Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker, who provided Guinn with access to never-before-published family documents and photographs, this book reveals the truth behind the myth, told with cinematic sweep and unprecedented insight by a master storyteller.
Download or read book Beyond Bach written by Andrew Talle and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2017-04-07 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reverence for J. S. Bach's music and its towering presence in our cultural memory have long affected how people hear his works. In his own time, however, Bach stood as just another figure among a number of composers, many of them more popular with the music-loving public. Eschewing the great composer style of music history, Andrew Talle takes us on a journey that looks at how ordinary people made music in Bach's Germany. Talle focuses in particular on the culture of keyboard playing as lived in public and private. As he ranges through a wealth of documents, instruments, diaries, account ledgers, and works of art, Talle brings a fascinating cast of characters to life. These individuals--amateur and professional performers, patrons, instrument builders, and listeners--inhabited a lost world, and Talle's deft expertise teases out the diverse roles music played in their lives and in their relationships with one another. At the same time, his nuanced re-creation of keyboard playing's social milieu illuminates the era's reception of Bach's immortal works.

But that was before the crazy hacker caused all their feeds to malfunction, sending them to the hospital to lie around with nothing inside their heads for days. And it was before Titus met Violet, a beautiful, brainy teenage girl who knows something about what it’s like to live without the feed-and about resisting its omnipresent ability to categorize human thoughts and desires. Following in the footsteps of George Orwell, Anthony Burgess, and Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., M. T. Anderson has created a brave new world - and a hilarious new lingo - sure to appeal to anyone who appreciates smart satire, futuristic fiction laced with humor, or any story featuring skin lesions as a fashion statement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A modern classic of true crime, set in a most beguiling Southern city—now in a 30th anniversary edition with a new afterword by the author “Elegant and wicked . . . might be the first true-crime book that makes the reader want to book a bed and breakfast for an extended weekend at the scene of the crime.”—The New York Times Book Review Shots rang out in Savannah’s grandest mansion in the misty, early morning hours of May 2, 1981. Was it murder or self-defense? For nearly a decade, the shooting and its aftermath reverberated throughout this hauntingly beautiful city of moss-hung oaks and shaded squares. In this sharply observed, suspenseful, and witty narrative, John Berendt skillfully interweaves a hugely entertaining first-person account of life in this isolated remnant of the Old South with the unpredictable twists and turns of a landmark murder case. It is a spellbinding story peopled by a gallery of remarkable characters: the well-bred society ladies of the Married Woman’s Card Club; the turbulent young gigolo; the hapless recluse who owns a bottle of poison so powerful it could kill every man, woman, and child in Savannah; the aging and profane Southern belle who is the “soul of pampered self-absorption”; the uproariously funny drag queen; the acerbic and arrogant antiques dealer; the sweet-talking, piano-playing con artist; young people dancing the minuet at the black debutante ball; and Minerva, the voodoo priestess who works her magic in the graveyard at midnight. These and other Savannahians act as a Greek chorus, with Berendt revealing the alliances, hostilities, and intrigues that thrive in a town where everyone knows everyone else. Brilliantly conceived and masterfully written, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is a sublime and seductive reading experience.

Download or read book Bandit written by Molly Brodak and published by Icon Books. This book was released on 2016-10-06 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Raw, poetic and compulsively readable ... I can't wait to buy a copy for everyone I know.' Kathryn Stockett, author of The Help The summer she turned thirteen, Molly Brodak's father was arrested for robbing eleven banks. In time, the image she held of him would unravel further, as more and more unexpected facets of his personality came to light. Bandit is her attempt to discover what, exactly, is left, when the most fundamental relationship of your life turns out to have been built on falsehoods. It is also a scrupulously honest account of learning how to trust again, and to rebuild the very idea of family from scratch. Refusing to fence off the trickier sides of her father's character, Brodak tries to find, through crystalline, spellbinding prose, a version of him that does not rely on the easy answers but allows him to be: an unknowable and incomprehensible whole – who is also her father. Unforgettable, moving, and utterly relatable, Bandit is a story of the unpredictable complexity of family.
