This book was released on 1977 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fission-product decay energy-releases rates were measured for thermal-neutron fission of 235U. Samples of mass 1 to 10 .mu.g were irradiated for 1 to 100 sec by use of the fast pneumatic-tube facility at the Oak Ridge Research Reactor. The resulting beta- and gamma-ray emissions were counted for times-after-fission between 2 and 14,000 seconds. The data were obtained for beta and gamma rays separately as spectral distributions, N(E/sub .gamma./) vs E/sub .gamma./ and N(E/sub beta/) vs E/sub .beta./. For the gamma-ray data the spectra were obtained by using a NaI detector, while for the beta-ray data the spectra were obtained by using an NE-110 detector with an anticoincidence mantle. The raw data were unfolded to provide spectral distributions of modest resolution. These were integrated over E/sub .gamma./ and E/sub .beta./ to provide total yield and energy integrals as a function of time after fission. Results are low compared to the present 1973 ANS Decay-heat standard. A complete description of the experimental apparatus and data-reduction techniques is presented. The final integral data are given in tabular and graphical form and are compared with published data. 41 figures, 13 tables.

This book was released on 1968 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental measurements of the gamma-ray spectra emitted by the products of thermal-neutron fission of U-235 have been made at nine selected times (, , 1, 2, 5, 10, 24, 48 and 72 hours) after fission. A calibrated and highly collimated 5 in. x 5 in. NaI (T1) detector was used. The 100-energy-bin gamma-ray spectra were unfolded from the pulse-height distributions by means of an iterative method. Extensive use was made of machine computation. The number of fissions in each sample was determined radiochemically.

Progress Report, March 1, 1993--January 31, 1994 written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decay heat measurements following the fast fission of 238U are well underway. The He-jet system and spectrometers were moved to the 1 MW research reactor to gain sufficient fast neutron flux for these measurements. On the Van de Graaff accelerator, the He-jet capillary has been shortened so that beta and gamma measurements following the thermal neutron fission of 235U could be made down to delay times near 0.1 s. Gamma-ray response functions are now well characterized for gamma energies up to 1.5 MeV for our large Nal spectrometer. Such response functions out to high energies are needed to extract energy distributions of our measured gamma spectra. The response function unfolding program, FERD-PC, has been operated successfully with trial spectra. Comparisons of individual fission products for 235U(n{sub th}f) with ENDF/B-VI at short delay times suggest several improvements to the data base particularly in production probabilities. The new data acquisition and data analysis systems have arrived and will soon be brought on line extending considerably the capabilities of our research group.

Book excerpt: A helium-jet/tape-transport system is employed in the study of beta-particle and gamma-ray energy spectra of aggregate fission products as a function of time after fission. During the initial nine months of this project we have investigated the following areas: Design, assembly and characterization of a beta-particle spectrometer; Measurement of [sup 235]U(n[sub th]ff) beta spectra for delay times 0.2 s to 12,000 s; Assembly and characterization of a 5 [times] 5 Nal(Tl) gamma-ray spectrometer; Measurement of [sup 235]U(n[sub th]ff) gamma-ray spectra for delay times 0.2s to 1 5,500s; Assembly and characterization of HPGe gamma-ray spectrometer with a Nal(Tl) Compton-and-background-suppression annulus; Measurement of [sup 235]U(n [sub th], ff) high-resolution gamma-ray spectra for delay times 0.6 s to over 100,000 s; Comparison of individual gamma-line intensities with ENDF/B-VI; Adaptation to our computer of unfolding program FERDO for beta and gamma aggregate fission-product energy spectra and development of a spectrum-stripping program for analysis of HPGe gamma-ray spectra; Study of the helium-jet fission-fragment elemental transfer efficiency. This work has resulted in the publication of twelve BAPS abstracts of presentations at scientific meetings. There are currently four Ph. D. and two M.S. candidates working on dissertations associated with the project.

This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gamma spectra from three fissionable isotopes, 233U, 235U, and 239Pu, were measured during neutron irradiation in the thermal column of the Omega West Reactor. The measurements were preceded by a neutron irradiation of at least 20,000 s to build up a near-equilibrium concentration of the shorter half-life fission products. The measurements provide the total gamma spectra and do not distinguish between photons emitted following neutron capture, fission, or by fission products. Cross sections were obtained by comparison with the hydrogen (n, .gamma.) peak from a 44.2-mg sample of polyethylene irradiated in the same flux. A 4.7-g/cm2 polyethylene scatterer was used to remove fission neutrons from the photon beam. The spectra for all three isotopes are similar, and prominent peaks occur at the same energies. The spectra can be approximated within approximately 30% by a single exponential: for 233U and 235U, sigma(E) approximately equal to 8000 (exp -1.1 E), and for 239Pu, sigma(E) approximately equal to 11,000 (exp -1.1 E), where E is in MeV. The multiplicity of photons per absorbed neutron, the energy released as gammas per absorbed neutron, and the average photon energy were obtained by summing the photon probability over the spectra.

This book was released on 1966 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental measurements of the gamma-ray pulse height distributions due to the products of fast-neutron-induced fission of Uranium-235 and Uranium-238 are presented. The measurements were made at nine selected times after fission from 15 minutes to 3 days. Irradiation times and counting intervals were chosen to minimize saturation and decay effects. The experimental data were used to calculate 100 energy bin distributions of the absolute number of photons/fission-sec. by means of absolute calibrations of the collimated NaI(T1) detector. The number of fissions in each sample was determined radiochemically. Machine computation was used extensively.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mounting evidence suggests (a) that the ORNL thermal-neutron fission decay heat data are likely correct to within stated uncertainties; (b) present data files (ENDF/B-V and others related to it) require more effort, and as improvements are made agreement with ORNL results is likely to become better; and (c) fast fission decay heat, induced by reactor-spectrum neutrons, appears to be little, if any, different from thermal-neutron fission-decay heat. The ANS 5.1 working group seems to be moving toward the above position but the standard for 235U has not yet been revised. Using 235U decay-heat data for 239Pu is quite conservative. Use of 235U decay-heat data for 241Pu decay-heat data as required in the standard is conservative only because of the over-statement (by approx. = 8%) of the 235U data in the standard.
