The introduction helps readers to position this thesis in game theory and graph theory, and Chapter 2 presents preliminaries, including cooperative games, digraphs, and games with a permission structure. Chapters 3, 4 and 5 provide new permission approaches, and characterize some Shapley value type solutions for cooperative games under these permission approaches. More specific, Chapter 3 combines disjunctive permission and local permission features to construct the local disjunctive permission approach. This approach requires that a player needs to get permission from at least one of its direct authorizers to cooperate, which can be used to model the approval right. Chapter 4 generalizes the local disjunctive and the local conjunctive permission approaches. This generalized approach requires that a player needs to get permission from a certain number of its direct authorizers to cooperate, which is suitable to describe certain voting situations. Chapter 5 provides a generalization of the local and the global disjunctive permission approaches, which requires that a non-top player needs permission from a sequence of authorizers that include a top player, or a sequence of at least $\xi$ authorizers to cooperate. This level generalization is commonly used in management. Besides, in those chapters, we provide axiomatizations for Shapley value type solutions for cooperative games under these permission approaches. Chapters 6 and 7 focus on applications of the content studied in the previous chapters. Chapter 6 provides a template for constructing measures based on permission values. In this chapter, we first propose the disjunctive measure to estimate dominance in a digraph by applying the local disjunctive permission value to additive games with a permission structure.

Book excerpt: In the field of cooperative games with restricted cooperation, various restrictions on coalition formation are studied. The most studied restrictions are those that arise from restricted communication and hierarchies. This survey discusses several models of hierarchy restrictions and their relation with communication restrictions. In the literature, there are results on game properties, Harsanyi dividends, core stability, and various solutions that generalize existing solutions for TU-games. In this survey we mainly focus on axiomatizations of the Shapley value in different models of games with a hierarchically structured player set, and their applications. Not only do these axiomatizations provide insight in the Shapley value for these models, but also by considering the types of axioms that characterize the Shapley value, we learn more about different network structures.A central model of games with hierarchies are the games with a permission structure where players in a cooperative transferable utility game are part of a permission structure in the sense that there are players that need permission from other players before they are allowed to cooperate. This permission structure is represented by a directed graph. Generalizations of this model are, for example, games on antimatroids, and games with a local permission structure. Besides discussing these generalizations, we briefly discuss some applications, in particular auction games and hierarchically structured firms.

Book excerpt: Cooperative games with a permission structure are useful tools for analyzing the impact of hierarchical structures on allocation problems in Economics and Operations Research. In this paper, we propose a generalization of the local disjunctive and the local conjunctive permission approaches called the k-local permission approach. In this approach, every player needs permission from a certain number of its predecessors to cooperate in a coalition. The special case where every player needs permission from at least one of, respectively all, its predecessors coincides with the local disjunctive, respectively local conjunctive, approach in the literature. We define and characterize a corresponding k-local permission value. After that, we apply this value to define a new class of power measures for directed graphs. We axiomatize these power measures, and apply some of them to two classical networks in the literature.

Book excerpt: Leading global experts in the field of politics and mathematics bring forth key insights on how voting power should be allocated between EU member states, and what the policy consequences are of any given institutional design. Close attention is paid to the practical implications of decision-making rules, the nature and distribution of power, and the most equitable ways to represent the preoccupations of European citizens both in the Council and European Parliament. Highly theoretical and methodologically advanced, this volume is set to enrich the debate on the future of the EU's institutional design. A valuable source of information to scholars of political science, European studies and law, as well as to people working on game theory, theory of voting and, in general, applications of mathematics to social science.
