Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gainsborough Constable O a few lovers of English Landscape Art this little volume will, I hope, be acceptable, notwithstanding its obvious deficiencies. The lives of these eminent painters of our rural scenery present many striking points of resemblance, and some sad points of contrast. Born amidst the same scenes, and educated under like influences, they were alike in their adoration of Nature, their allegiance to true Art, and their unwearying life of toil; but their professional careers were very different. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Constable's Country The Valley of the Stour contains much of interest apart from the story of Constable and his pictures, and I have set down whatever seemed worthy of record, whether of wayside incident or local tradition. But the title of this book is no misnomer. NO name is more indelibly associated with the country which it describes than the name of Constable. His knowledge of the fair and fertile country around the Stour was more intimate than that Of Gainsborough. It inspired a large proportion of his work. In later life, at Hampstead and elsewhere, his heart was often in Suffolk. Standing before his easel he saw, as in a mirror, his native county, and in fancy lingered beside what Stevenson so aptly styled the lilied lowland waters of that Shire. Constable, early in his career, felt that he could paint his own homeland as he could paint no other. You know, he once wrote, I have always succeeded best with my native scenes. They have always charmed me, and I hope they always will. They charmed him to the end. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gainsborough Constable For the biographical information contained in the following pages 1 am almost entirely indebted to the works of Messrs. Fulcher and C. ft. Leslie. These books, though admirable in many respects, are not very rich sources of information. In Gainsborough's case this is not surprising. In Ipswich, where he had lived for many years, Constable was unable, in 1797, "to learn anything of consequence respecting him," and, with the exception of Thicknesse's contemptible pamphlet, no biographical notice of the artist appeared until the year 1829. In that year Allan Cunningham devoted twenty-eight pages of his "Lives of the Painters" to Gainsborough. Fulcher's labours were interrupted by death, and had to be completed by his son. Probably, apart from his professional labours, his life was somewhat uneventful, and from the year 1745 onwards might well be summed up in the familiar phrase, "he married and lived happily ever afterwards." The anecdotes recorded in his biography seem to me for the most part singularly uninteresting, and I have quoted two or three only. Leslie's life of Constable is a charming work, but is for the most part made up of the artist's letters, as the title states. It gives one a delightful insight into the inner life of the artist; but the reader who seeks to collect many facts respecting the events of Constable's life will find that it was not the author's chief aim to supply them. I have also consulted with much pleasure and benefit Messrs Redgraves' Century of Painters; Wornum's Epochs of Painting; Dr. Waagen's Art Treasures in Great Britain; and an admirable essay in the Quarterly Review, February, 1809. Book excerpt: Excerpt from George Morland: His Life and Works Then came a very remarkable succession of English painters who reached the first rank Reynolds born in 1723, Stubbs 1724, Gainsborough 1729, Romney 1734, Raeburn 1756, Morland 1763, Crome 1769, Turner 1775, Constable 1776; other names might be added, but those given suffice to show that the birth of English art took place during the latter half of the eighteenth century. Reynolds and Romney were essentially portrait painters Gainsborough, though his fame rests upon his portraits, was also a landscape painter, and on occasion portrayed animals with marked success. Raeburn, sometimes called the Scottish Reynolds, was a portrait painter Crome, Turner, and Constable were landscape painters. Book excerpt: From country lanes to thatch roofs, a stroll through the enduring appeal of the nineteenth-century trope of rural English bliss. A Sweet View explores how writers and artists in the nineteenth century shaped the English countryside as a partly imaginary idyll, with its distinctive repertoire of idealized scenery: the village green, the old country churchyard, hedgerows and cottages, scenic variety concentrated into a small compass, snugness and comfort. The book draws on a very wide range of contemporary sources and features some of the key makers of the “South Country” rural idyll, including Samuel Palmer, Myles Birket Foster, and Richard Jefferies. The legacy of the idyll still influences popular perceptions of the essential character of a certain kind of English landscape—indeed for Henry James that imagery constituted “the very essence of England” itself. As A Sweet View makes clear, the countryside idyll forged over a century ago is still with us today.

Book excerpt: Bridging the fields of conservation, art history, and museum curating, this volume contains the principal papers from an international symposium titled "Historical Painting Techniques, Materials, and Studio Practice" at the University of Leiden in Amsterdam, Netherlands, from June 26 to 29, 1995. The symposium—designed for art historians, conservators, conservation scientists, and museum curators worldwide—was organized by the Department of Art History at the University of Leiden and the Art History Department of the Central Research Laboratory for Objects of Art and Science in Amsterdam. Twenty-five contributors representing museums and conservation institutions throughout the world provide recent research on historical painting techniques, including wall painting and polychrome sculpture. Topics cover the latest art historical research and scientific analyses of original techniques and materials, as well as historical sources, such as medieval treatises and descriptions of painting techniques in historical literature. Chapters include the painting methods of Rembrandt and Vermeer, Dutch 17th-century landscape painting, wall paintings in English churches, Chinese paintings on paper and canvas, and Tibetan thangkas. Color plates and black-and-white photographs illustrate works from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.
