Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the missions is a compelling human drama that is a vital piece not only of California history, but also of American history. Indeed, many keys to California's past lie in the stories of the 20 missions that stretch along the state's west coast from San Diego to San Francisco. This vital series is compatible with the mission-based curriculum used in fourth-grade California classrooms. It resonates equally with all social studies programs that explore the defunct notion of colonialism and its controversial role in the history of the United States, and with curricula that seek to explore the interaction of different cultures and the rights and voices of indigenous peoples.

Book excerpt: GUARDIAN ANGELS Tough boss, tender lover Gabriel McGuire knew that Chloe Cavanaugh had never taken to him as her boss. Maybe he was ruthless and uncompromising, but she was certainly no angel! The way Chloe taunted him at work could be amusing, but her reckless actions could also be downright exasperating! If he was sometimes abrasive with her, couldn't Chloe see that it was for her own good? One of these days, she'd take one risk too many. She'd probably worn out a whole host of guardian angels, but some small voice kept telling Gabriel that someone had to protect her and he was the man for the job… Falling in love sometimes needs a little help from above!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gabriel's Rebellion tells the dramatic story of what was perhaps the most extensive slave conspiracy in the history of the American South. Douglas Egerton illuminates the complex motivations that underlay two related Virginia slave revolts: the first, in 1800, led by the slave known as Gabriel; and the second, called the 'Easter Plot,' instigated in 1802 by one of his followers. Although Gabriel has frequently been portrayed as a messianic, Samson-like figure, Egerton shows that he was a literate and highly skilled blacksmith whose primary goal was to destroy the economic hegemony of the 'merchants,' the only whites he ever identified as his enemies. According to Egerton, the social, political, and economic disorder of the Revolutionary era weakened some of the harsh controls that held slavery in place during colonial times. Emboldened by these conditions, a small number of literate slaves--most of them highly skilled artisans--planned an armed insurrection aimed at destroying slavery in Virginia. The intricate scheme failed, as did the Easter Plot that stemmed from it, and Gabriel and many of his followers were hanged. By placing the revolts within the broader context of the volatile political currents of the day, Egerton challenges the conventional understanding of race, class, and politics in the early days of the American republic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one had ever been so far in alternative history and even changed our own History into a parallel or rewritten History which would comme and crush the first, the True one, in order to take its place. For what reasons? By what means? This book, which will remain a fiction as long as its last prediction is not completed, clearly explains. If you are an atheist, you will be glad to learn that the religions of the Book are the result of a huge manipulation of future, whose aims have served a desperate cause thanks to a providential technical innovation. This sacrilegious book takes place in a dimension which has been neglected for too long (the time) and deciphers an unimaginable truth. On its way, it demythologizes the flying objects from the past (long before aircraft) by identifying them, not as extraterrestrial vehicles, but as aircraft come from the Future of the Earth itself. It is the end of an immense taboo, which opens the way to a future permanently interacting with a past that we believed unique so far. This book is a major progress in the dimension of time, which links Man to a Future... he has already lived!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Gabriel's Episcopal Church was founded in 1871, when Adm. Andrew Harwood decided to retire in Marion, Massachusetts, and fulfill a promise that he had made to the archangel Gabriel after surviving a fierce storm at sea. Initially a church for Marion's summer residents, it became a year-round church in 1896. In 1899, the national press corps lined up outside the church to glimpse the wedding of the country's most famous journalist, Richard Harding Davis, to artist Cecil Clark. Beginning in 1913, the chapel was enhanced with 11 stained-glass windows designed for the church by Charles J. Connick, the most famous American stained-glass artist of the 20th century. The church was later expanded after the acquisition of adjacent land and the construction of a parish hall, church school buildings, and a new sanctuary. In the 1950s, the church began having full-time rectors. Today, the church has 300 family members on its rolls and will celebrate 150 years in 2021.
