Download or read book Gabriele Von Bülow; Daughter of Wilhelm Von Humboldt written by Clara Nordlinger and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gabriele Von Bulow; Daughter of Wilhelm Von Humboldt: A Memoir Compiled From the Family Papers of Wilhelm Von Humboldt and His Children, 1791-1887 The subject of the accompanying memoir, Gabriele von Billow, was a member of a noble German family, which became illustrious in the persons of Wilhelm and Alexander von Humboldt, the former of whom was Gabriele's father. It is not to be wondered at that, coming from such a stock, she should have been endowed with talents and cultivation entitling her life to preservation in biographical form. The deep interest which the work occasioned on its appearance in Germany amply justified the anticipations of those friends who were already acquainted with her life and letters. Among these was the present Grand Duchess of Baden, sister of the Emperor Frederick, and we learn from the preface to the German edition that the book was undertaken at the suggestion of her Royal Highness, to whom indeed it is dedicated. It was at first intended merely to provide a lasting memorial of a charming woman of line character for her relatives, friends, and descendants. But as Frau von Billow's high position gave her a wide outlook over contemporary politics, and brought her into close association with noted men of her time, it seemed likely that a narrative of her Life might have an interest for a more extended public. Book Synopsis Letters and Papers from Prison by : Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Download or read book Letters and Papers from Prison written by Dietrich Bonhoeffer and published by SCM Press. This book was released on 2013-01-25 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the great classics of prison literature, Letters and Papers from Prison effectively serves as the last will and testament of the Lutheran theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer, executed by the Nazis after incarceration in Tegel Prison. Acute and subtle, warm and perceptive, yet also profoundly moving, the documents collectively tell a very human story of loss, of courage, and of hope. Now reissued with a new Preface, by one of his leading interpreters. Bonhoeffer's story seems as vitally relevant, as politically prophetic, and as theologically significant, as it did yesterday.

Book Synopsis Children during the Holocaust by : Patricia Heberer
Download or read book Children during the Holocaust written by Patricia Heberer and published by Rowman Altamira. This book was released on 2011-05-31 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children during the Holocaust, from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies, tells the story of the Holocaust through the eyes, and fates, of its youngest victims. The ten chapters follow the arc of the persecutory policies of the Nazis and their sympathizers and the impact these measures had on Jewish children and adolescents—from the years leading to the war, to the roundups, deportations, and emigrations, to hidden life and death in the ghettos and concentration camps, and to liberation and coping in the wake of war. This volume examines the reactions of children to discrimination, the loss of livelihood in Jewish homes, and the public humiliation at the hands of fellow citizens and explores the ways in which children's experiences paralleled and diverged from their adult counterparts. Additional chapters reflect upon the role of non-Jewish children as victims, perpetrators, and bystanders during World War II. Offering a collection of personal letters, diaries, court testimonies, government documents, military reports, speeches, newspapers, photographs, and artwork, Children during the Holocaust highlights the diversity of children's experiences during the nightmare years of the Holocaust.
