Book excerpt: Genetic improvement of seed oil content and oil quality had been the main objective of rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) breeders until recently, when interest in improving rapeseed meal (RSM) as a secondary trait increased. Seed oil content is the main source of vegetable oil while RSM is a valuable source of animal feed. RSM is the protein-rich by-product after oil extraction from the seed. The quality of oil in rapeseed, as a source of diet is highly dependent on the relative amount of fatty acids in the seed oil. Total saturated fatty acid content (SFA) in the oil is the sum of palmitic, ste...

Book excerpt: Oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) is one of the world's most important oil crops, and due to a growing demand of vegetable oil for nutritional as well as industrial purposes increasing seed oil content is a major aim for oilseed rape breeding. Compared to other field crops oilseed rape is a rather young species and therefore its genetic variation is limited. However, breeding efforts of the last decades increased seed oil content substantially in European breeding material. But the intensive selection process further decreased genetic diversity, thus the need for a new source of genetic vari...

Book excerpt: Novel alleles in genes for oil content can entails the possibility for new approaches to positively influence the oil content in rape seed (Osborn et al., 2007; Würschum et al., 2013; Jesske et al., 2013a). In this study, the allelic diversity of a large number of candidate gene loci for oil content has been analyzed on the DNA sequence level in a broad set of exotic rapeseed materials represented by Chinese, spring and resynthesized rapeseed and has been compared to current winter rapeseed breeding materials. Many alleles have been observed that were specific to the exotic genotypes. The h...

Book excerpt: Rapeseed is an important oilseed crop belonging to Crucifereae family and grown in subtropical to temperate climate. Recent discoveries have caused the scientific community to respond positively by directing a greater amount of research towards increasing production and improving the quality of rapeseed oil. Today, the annual worldwide production is approximately 7.5 million tons on 4 million acres. Canola ranks 5th in the production of world's oilseed crops following soybean, sunflower, groundnut and cottonseed. Rapeseed Breeding fully explains the miraculous discoveries about the genetic material which have contributed to the growth of this important crop. With contributions from world-renowned researchers from North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia, this book provides the first scientific reference for scientists interested in the further exploitation of this important crop. * Presents history, origin and evolution, breeding methods, practical applications of DNA markers, fingerprinting of cultivars, and conservation of rapeseed germplasm * Includes detail of different breeding purposes including breeding for improved oil and meal quality, breeding for winter hardiness, breeding for herbicides, and breeding for hybrid rape. * Provides analysis of ecology, usage, degeneration and application

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canola (Brassica napus) oil has immense economic value due to its use as food. The production of biodiesel has led to the recent increase in the demand for canola oil, and further reinforced the need to improve the oil content and composition of canola seeds. The content and quality of canola oil is dependent on the process of fatty acid biosynthesis and accumulation of triacylglycerols (TAGs) during seed development. The biochemical pathways leading to the synthesis of fatty acids and TAGs are thoroughly understood, and many of the genes encoding the metabolic enzymes involved in this pathway have been isolated and functionally characterized. Despite comprehensive understanding of fatty acid and TAG biosynthesis, alternate factors and genes involved in the modification of seed oil content and composition are being investigated. This has initiated a new sector of research focusing on a series of transcription factors: LEAFY COTYLEDON1 (LEC1), LEAFY COTYLEDON2 (LEC2), FUSCA3 (FUS3) and WRINKLED1 (WRI1), which play a key role during embryo and seed development. Previous studies in Arabidopsis have demonstrated that the noted transcription factors influence the synthesis and accumulation of oil during seed development. These findings have prompted the design of two studies with the objective of further characterizing the role of these genes. In the first study, a homolog of Arabidopsis LEC1 was isolated from Brassica napus (Bn) microspore derived embryos. BnLEC1 contained the same distinct features identified in LEC1 genes from other plant species. BnLEC1 was inserted into an expression vector, which was subsequently used to transform Arabidopsis plants. The transgenic lines were characterized by differences in seed oil composition, and one line showed a reduction in the number of seeds counted per silique. Expression analysis revealed that the transgene was not expressed in the transgenic lines. To account for the discrepant findings, the possibility of endogenous gene silencing mechanisms suppressing transgene expression has been discussed. As an extension of this research, a second study assessed the differential expression of LEC1, LEC2, FUS3 and WRI1 in double haploid Brassica napus lines characterized by different levels of seed oil content. The expression level of the noted genes was determined at 7, 14, 21 and 28 days after pollination. Numerous changes in the transcript level were observed, but the trends were not consistent among high and low oil content lines.

Book excerpt: Rapeseed is the traditional name of a large winter or spring annual oilseed crop from the Brassicaceae family, and is related to mustard, cabbage, broccoli, among others. As one of the leading oilseed crops, rapeseed is primarily grown for its oil content. This book presents research on the chemical composition, production and health benefits of rapeseed. The first chapter reviews the literature on rapeseed/canola derived bioactive peptides with emphasis on strategic production and processing methods as well as antihypertensive, antitumor, hypocholesterolemic, and multifunctional properties. Chapter two summarises recent advances on the extraction processes of rapeseed-derived protein and bioactive compounds and reviews the possibilities as well as the challenges that these ingredients face regarding skin care, food and nutraceutical applications. Chapter three examines physical properties of fat filling produced with oil industry by-products sunflower and rapeseed lecithin in comparison with widely used emulsifier- soy lecithin. Chapter four provides a comprehensive summary about contribution of mass spectrometric methods to analysis of rapeseed, reflecting their irreplaceability to the field of "Food control." The final chapter studies antioxidant activity in transgenic canola plants grown in vitro.
