Book excerpt: Three-phase induction motors have been used in a wide range of industry applications; since they are robust, brushless and have simple design. Furthermore, the speed of induction motor can be easily controlled by variable frequency drives. The continuous development in power electronics semiconductors came out with modern electric drives. These drives use high speed power transistors, like IGBT and MOSFET, with various switching techniques. The speed control of induction motor is important to achieve maximum torque and efficiency. In the past decades, conventional control systems, such as proportional-integral derivative (PID) controller, were applied to electric drives to control the speed of induction motor. The PID controller is not a well established control method in motor drive because of the nonlinearity of induction motor. On the other hand, the use of Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) improves the performance of the speed control of induction motor. In this research, a microcontroller-based fuzzy logic controller was developed. The FLC replaces the conventional PI controller to improve the speed response of the drive in order to keep the speed of the induction motor constant when the load varies within the operating range. The research also included the design and implementation of a three-phase voltage source inverter (VSI) driven by Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) signal. The control system in this research was designed using Matlab/Simulink environment. The simulation included a comparison of speed response of FLC and PI controller. The input to FLC is the linguistic variable of speed error and change of speed error, while the output of FLC is the frequency fed to the inverter. The three-phase inverter was fabricated using MOSFET Hex-bridge connected to a low-pass LC-filter to smooth the inverter output voltage wave. In order to apply FLC and generate corresponding SVPWM signals a PIC16F877A microcontroller was used in the control system. The speed controller was tested using various values of input speed using simulation and experiments. The results showed the superiority of the proposed FLC over the conventional PI controller in the dynamics response of speed. The results also showed the ability of the proposed to generate a three-phase sine wave with desired frequency to control the speed of the induction motor with THD less than 5%.

Book excerpt: Conventional controllers like the proportional integral differential (PID) would have being very effective not just for speed control alone, if not for some complexities with individually controlling its respective controllers and summing up their individual contributions to effectively yield controlled signal output. Also, for its insensitivity to changes made to model parameters which may be as a result of misrepresentation of some control variables. As a result of this, developing an intelligent based fuzzy logic controller (FLC) became eminent, and on this basis, this book is written. By varying the motor speed with input reference speed, an error signal and a feedback loop is generated. The FLC then operates on the principles of mapping with corrective measure of the error signal generated and it is regulated by sets of IF-THEN rules integrating the Mamdani fuzzy inference approach. The rules projected and formed are used to overcome the drawbacks of conventional controllers. Since induction motors are widely used in many industries today, most especially squirrel caged, an intelligent approach to the control of these motors will save cost, increase reliability and efficiency

Book excerpt: This thesis presents a hybrid PIDfuzzy control system for the speed control of a three phase squirrel cage induction motor. The proposed method incorporates fuzzy logic and conventional controllers with utilization of vector control technique. This method combines the advantages of fuzzy logic controller and conventional controllers to improve the speed response of the induction motor. The design of fuzzy system consists of 9 fuzzy variables and 49 IF THEN rules that define the behavior of the system. The FLC observes the loop error signal and correspondingly control the PID input error signal so that the actual speed signal matches the reference speed signal with reduced rise time, settling time, and peak over shoot. Implementation and simulation results using MATLAB SIMULINK of various hybrid system controllers are compared along with conventional PI controller in terms of several performance measurements such as rise time, maximum percent overshoot, settling time, and steady state error at various load conditions. The results verified the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid speed controller under different operating conditions and demonstrated improvements in performance in speed tracking and system's stability.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fuzzy logic controller has been developed and simluated on an indirect vector control of an induction motor (IVCIM) drive system. The objective of the indirect vector control is to convert the three-phase induction motor into a linear device where the torque and the flux in the motor can be controlled independently. The induction motor is fed by a current-controlled PWM inverter. The proposed fuzzy speed controller block in a vector controlled drive system observes the pattern of the speed loop error signal and correspondingly updates its output, so that the actual speed matches the command speeds. The design of the fuzzy controller starts with identifying the inputs, performing the membership functions for the two inputs of the FLC and ends at manipulating the final command signal to the current regulator which triggers the inverter. The fuzzy logic toolbox has been used to build the fuzzy inference system (FIS) which is the dynamo of the fuzzy logic controller. The proposed FLC controller has been designed to meet the speed tracking requirements under a step change in speed and load changes. The proposed FLC drive dynamic performance has been investigated and tested under different operating conditions by simulation in the Simuling/Matlab software environment. In order to prove the superiority of the FLC, a conventional PI controller based IM drive system has also been simulated. The simulation results obtained have proved the very good performance and robustness of the proposed FLC. It is concluded that the proposed fuzzy logic controller has shown superior performances over the conventional PI controller.

Book excerpt: This book describes the development of an adaptive state observer using a mathematical model to achieve high performance for sensorless induction motor drives. This involves first deriving an expression for a modified gain rotor flux observer with a parameter adaptive scheme to estimate the motor speed accurately and improve the stability and performance of sensorless vector-controlled induction motor drives. This scheme is then applied to the controls of a photovoltaic-motor water-pumping system, which results in improved dynamic performance under different operating conditions. The book also presents a robust speed controller design for a sensorless vector-controlled induction motor drive system based on H∞ theory, which overcomes the problems of the classical controller.

Book excerpt: This dissertation presents a methodology for implementation of a rule based fuzzy logic controller applied to a closed loop volts/hertz single phase induction motor speed control. The induction motor is modelled by using d-q axis theory. The performance of FLC is compared with that of a PI controller. The advantages of the Fuzzy Logic Controller over the conventional controllers are : (i) they are economically advantageous to develop, (ii) a wider range of operating conditions can be covered using FLCs, and initial approximate set of fuzzy rules can be impulsively refined by a self-organizing fuzzy controller. For volts/hertz speed control of the single phase induction motor, a reference speed has been used and the control architecture includes some rules. The errors are evaluated according to the rules in accordance to the defined member functions. The member functions and the rules have been defined using the Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) editor given in Matlab. The system has been simulated in Matlab / Simulink and the results are given. Provide briefing results, analysis and discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am very happy to have this Special Issue of the journal Energies on the topic of Design and Control of Electrical Motor Drives published. Electrical motor drives are widely used in the industry, automation, transportation, and home appliances. Indeed, rolling mills, machine tools, high-speed trains, subway systems, elevators, electric vehicles, air conditioners, all depend on electrical motor drives. However, the production of effective and practical motors and drives requires flexibility in the regulation of current, torque, flux, acceleration, position, and speed. Without proper modeling, drive, and control, these motor drive systems cannot function effectively. To address these issues, we need to focus on the design, modeling, drive, and control of different types of motors, such as induction motors, permanent magnet synchronous motors, brushless DC motors, DC motors, synchronous reluctance motors, switched reluctance motors, flux-switching motors, linear motors, and step motors. Therefore, relevant research topics in this field of study include modeling electrical motor drives, both in transient and in steady-state, and designing control methods based on novel control strategies (e.g., PI controllers, fuzzy logic controllers, neural network controllers, predictive controllers, adaptive controllers, nonlinear controllers, etc.), with particular attention to transient responses, load disturbances, fault tolerance, and multi-motor drive techniques. This SI include original contributions regarding recent developments and ideas in motor design, motor drive, and motor control. The topics include motor design, field-oriented control, torque control, reliability improvement, advanced controllers for motor drive systems, DSP-based sensorless motor drive systems, high-performance motor drive systems, high-efficiency motor drive systems, and practical applications of motor drive systems. I want to sincerely thank authors, reviewers, and staff members for their time and efforts.
