Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author studies the Smarandache Fuzzy Algebra, which, like its predecessor Fuzzy Algebra, arose from the need to define structures that were more compatible with the real world where the grey areas mattered, not only black or white. In any human field, a Smarandache n-structure on a set S means a weak structure {w(0)} on S such that there exists a chain of proper subsets P(n-1) in P(n-2) in?in P(2) in P(1) in S whose corresponding structures verify the chain {w(n-1)} includes {w(n-2)} includes? includes {w(2)} includes {w(1)} includes {w(0)}, where 'includes' signifies 'strictly stronger' (i.e., structure satisfying more axioms). This book is referring to a Smarandache 2-algebraic structure (two levels only of structures in algebra) on a set S, i.e. a weak structure {w(0)} on S such that there exists a proper subset P of S, which is embedded with a stronger structure {w(1)}. Properties of Smarandache fuzzy semigroups, groupoids, loops, bigroupoids, biloops, non-associative rings, birings, vector spaces, semirings, semivector spaces, non-associative semirings, bisemirings, near-rings, non-associative near-ring, and binear-rings are presented in the second part of this book together with examples, solved and unsolved problems, and theorems. Also, applications of Smarandache groupoids, near-rings, and semirings in automaton theory, in error correcting codes, and in the construction of S-sub-biautomaton can be found in the last chapter.

Book excerpt: In the mid-1960's I had the pleasure of attending a talk by Lotfi Zadeh at which he presented some of his basic (and at the time, recent) work on fuzzy sets. Lotfi's algebra of fuzzy subsets of a set struck me as very nice; in fact, as a graduate student in the mid-1950's, I had suggested similar ideas about continuous-truth-valued propositional calculus (inffor "and", sup for "or") to my advisor, but he didn't go for it (and in fact, confused it with the foundations of probability theory), so I ended up writing a thesis in a more conventional area of mathematics (differential algebra). I especially enjoyed Lotfi's discussion of fuzzy convexity; I remember talking to him about possible ways of extending this work, but I didn't pursue this at the time. I have elsewhere told the story of how, when I saw C. L. Chang's 1968 paper on fuzzy topological spaces, I was impelled to try my hand at fuzzi fying algebra. This led to my 1971 paper "Fuzzy groups", which became the starting point of an entire literature on fuzzy algebraic structures. In 1974 King-Sun Fu invited me to speak at a U. S. -Japan seminar on Fuzzy Sets and their Applications, which was to be held that summer in Berkeley.

Book excerpt: Non-Classical Logics and their Applications to Fuzzy Subsets is the first major work devoted to a careful study of various relations between non-classical logics and fuzzy sets. This volume is indispensable for all those who are interested in a deeper understanding of the mathematical foundations of fuzzy set theory, particularly in intuitionistic logic, Lukasiewicz logic, monoidal logic, fuzzy logic and topos-like categories. The tutorial nature of the longer chapters, the comprehensive bibliography and index make it suitable as a valuable and important reference for graduate students as well as research workers in the field of non-classical logics. The book is arranged in three parts: Part A presents the most recent developments in the theory of Heyting algebras, MV-algebras, quantales and GL-monoids. Part B gives a coherent and current account of topos-like categories for fuzzy set theory based on Heyting algebra valued sets, quantal sets of M-valued sets. Part C addresses general aspects of non-classical logics including epistemological problems as well as recursive properties of fuzzy logic.

Book excerpt: In the world of mathematics, the study of fuzzy relations and its theories are well-documented and a staple in the area of calculative methods. What many researchers and scientists overlook is how fuzzy theory can be applied to industries outside of arithmetic. The framework of fuzzy logic is much broader than professionals realize. There is a lack of research on the full potential this theoretical model can reach. The Handbook of Research on Emerging Applications of Fuzzy Algebraic Structures provides emerging research exploring the theoretical and practical aspects of fuzzy set theory and its real-life applications within the fields of engineering and science. Featuring coverage on a broad range of topics such as complex systems, topological spaces, and linear transformations, this book is ideally designed for academicians, professionals, and students seeking current research on innovations in fuzzy logic in algebra and other matrices.

Because of the huge spectrum of topics involving social systems, various issues related to Mathematics, Statistics, Teaching, Social Science, and Economics are discussed. In an effort to introduce the subject to a wider audience, this volume, part of the series “Studies in Systems, Decision and Control”, equally addresses the needs of mathematicians, statisticians, sociologists and philosophers. The studies examined here are divided into four parts. The first part, “Perusing the Minds Behind Scientific Discoveries”, traces the winding path of Syamal K. Sen and Ravi P. Agarwal’s scholarship throughout history, and most importantly, the thought processes that allowed each of them to master their subject. The second part covers “Theories in Social Systems” and the third discusses “Models in Social Systems”, while the fourth and final part is dedicated to “Mathematical Methods in the Social Sciences”. Given its breadth of coverage, the book will offer inquisitive readers a valuable point of departure for exploring these rich, vast, and ever-expanding fields of knowledge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term "fuzzy logic," as it is understood in this book, stands for all aspects of representing and manipulating knowledge based on the rejection of the most fundamental principle of classical logic---the principle of bivalence. According to this principle, each declarative sentence is required to be either true or false. In fuzzy logic, these classical truth values are not abandoned. However, additional, intermediate truth values between true and false are allowed, which are interpreted as degrees of truth. This opens a new way of thinking---thinking in terms of degrees rather than absolutes. For example, it leads to the definition of a new kind of sets, referred to as fuzzy sets, in which membership is a matter of degree. The book examines the genesis and development of fuzzy logic. It surveys the prehistory of fuzzy logic and inspects circumstances that eventually lead to the emergence of fuzzy logic. The book explores in detail the development of propositional, predicate, and other calculi that admit degrees of truth, which are known as fuzzy logic in the narrow sense. Fuzzy logic in the broad sense, whose primary aim is to utilize degrees of truth for emulating common-sense human reasoning in natural language, is scrutinized as well. The book also examines principles for developing mathematics based on fuzzy logic and provides overviews of areas in which this has been done most effectively. It also presents a detailed survey of established and prospective applications of fuzzy logic in various areas of human affairs, and provides an assessment of the significance of fuzzy logic as a new paradigm.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many results in fuzzy logic depend on the mathematical structure the truth value set obeys. In this textbook the algebraic foundations of many-valued and fuzzy reasoning are introduced. The book is self-contained, thus no previous knowledge in algebra or in logic is required. It contains 134 exercises with complete answers, and can therefore be used as teaching material at universities for both undergraduated and post-graduated courses. Chapter 1 starts from such basic concepts as order, lattice, equivalence and residuated lattice. It contains a full section on BL-algebras. Chapter 2 concerns MV-algebra and its basic properties. Chapter 3 applies these mathematical results on Lukasiewicz-Pavelka style fuzzy logic, which is studied in details; besides semantics, syntax and completeness of this logic, a lot of examples are given. Chapter 4 shows the connection between fuzzy relations, approximate reasoning and fuzzy IF-THEN rules to residuated lattices.

Book excerpt: Mathematics of Fuzziness – Basic Issues introduces a basic notion of ‘fuzziness’ and provides a conceptual mathematical framework to characterize such fuzzy phenomena in Studies in Fuzziness and Soft Computing. The book systematically presents a self-contained introduction to the essentials of mathematics of fuzziness ranging from fuzzy sets, fuzzy relations, fuzzy numbers, fuzzy algebra, fuzzy measures, fuzzy integrals, and fuzzy topology to fuzzy control in a strictly mathematical manner. It contains most of the authors’ research results in the field of fuzzy set theory and has evolved from the authors’ lecture notes to both undergraduate and graduate students over the last three decades. A lot of exercises in each chapter of the book are particularly suitable as a textbook for any undergraduate and graduate student in mathematics, computer science and engineering. The reading of the book will surely lay a solid foundation for further research on fuzzy set theory and its applications.
