Book excerpt: Image fusion in remote sensing or pansharpening involves fusing spatial (panchromatic) and spectral (multispectral) images that are captured by different sensors on satellites. This book addresses image fusion approaches for remote sensing applications. Both conventional and deep learning approaches are covered. First, the conventional approaches to image fusion in remote sensing are discussed. These approaches include component substitution, multi-resolution, and model-based algorithms. Then, the recently developed deep learning approaches involving single-objective and multi-objective loss functions are discussed. Experimental results are provided comparing conventional and deep learning approaches in terms of both low-resolution and full-resolution objective metrics that are commonly used in remote sensing. The book is concluded by stating anticipated future trends in pansharpening or image fusion in remote sensing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hyperspectral Image Fusion is the first text dedicated to the fusion techniques for such a huge volume of data consisting of a very large number of images. This monograph brings out recent advances in the research in the area of visualization of hyperspectral data. It provides a set of pixel-based fusion techniques, each of which is based on a different framework and has its own advantages and disadvantages. The techniques are presented with complete details so that practitioners can easily implement them. It is also demonstrated how one can select only a few specific bands to speed up the process of fusion by exploiting spatial correlation within successive bands of the hyperspectral data. While the techniques for fusion of hyperspectral images are being developed, it is also important to establish a framework for objective assessment of such techniques. This monograph has a dedicated chapter describing various fusion performance measures that are applicable to hyperspectral image fusion. This monograph also presents a notion of consistency of a fusion technique which can be used to verify the suitability and applicability of a technique for fusion of a very large number of images. This book will be a highly useful resource to the students, researchers, academicians and practitioners in the specific area of hyperspectral image fusion, as well as generic image fusion.

It presents a broad analysis of the field, encompassing passive and active sensors, hyperspectral images, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), interferometric SAR, and polarimetric SAR data. At the same time, it addresses highly topical subjects involving remote sensing data types (e.g., very high-resolution images, multiangular or multiresolution data, and satellite image time series) and analysis methodologies (e.g., probabilistic graphical models, hierarchical image representations, kernel machines, data fusion, and compressive sensing) that currently have primary importance in the field of mathematical modelling for remote sensing and image processing. Each chapter focuses on a particular type of remote sensing data and/or on a specific methodological area, presenting both a thorough analysis of the previous literature and a methodological and experimental discussion of at least two advanced mathematical methods for information extraction from remote sensing data. This organization ensures that both tutorial information and advanced subjects are covered. With each chapter being written by research scientists from (at least) two different institutions, it offers multiple professional experiences and perspectives on each subject. The book also provides expert analysis and commentary from leading remote sensing and image processing researchers, many of whom serve on the editorial boards of prestigious international journals in these fields, and are actively involved in international scientific societies. Providing the reader with a comprehensive picture of the overall advances and the current cutting-edge developments in the field of mathematical models for remote sensing image analysis, this book is ideal as both a reference resource and a textbook for graduate and doctoral students as well as for remote sensing scientists and practitioners.

Book excerpt: Fusion or Pansharpening improves the spatial quality of Multispectral satellite images by making use of details present in a high resolution Panchromatic image. The different nature of Panchromatic and Multispectral sensors requires that the details are added using a detail injection model. Most of the available detail injection model parameters are estimated at degraded resolution and then interpolated for use at the higher resolution. In this work we have presented a detail injection model which estimates the detail injection parameters directly at the desired higher resolution. The model optimizes the" Quality Not Requiring a Reference index". The proposed method is then extended for pansharpening of Hyperspectral images. Finally, a quality assessment index, not requiring a high resolution reference, is proposed for determining the quality of pansharpened images at full resolution. The novelty of the method lies in the use of sensors" Modulation Transfer Function" filters for separating the low and high frequency information for determining the spectral and spatial distortions, respectively.

This book was released on 2018 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive guide to the characteristics and use of high resolution optical images from satellite-borne sensors, concentrating on sensors designed for mapping. It considers in detail the SPOT series of satellites and sensors with a ground sample distance (GSD) of less than 15m, operational since SPOT 1 and particularly the commercial sensors launched since 1999 with GSD of less than 1m. The book explains the way in which high resolution imagery is obtained and the issues which surround its collection and use. It deals progressively with the fundamentals of mapping from imagery, followed by the key features in the design of sensors and methods of data storage and transmission, including data compression. Subsequent chapters cover the sensors, calibration, sensor models and the methods of determining the orientation elements and extracting coordinates from the images. Rigorous orientation, use of rational polynomial coefficients (RPCs) and approximate methods are covered. Results from tests showing the accuracy which can be obtained, generation of digital elevations models, their accuracy and the production of orthoimages are included, as are image processing and data fusion. Finally, future missions and the issues which face further development are discussed. High Resolution Optical Satellite Imagery is written by a team of acknowledged international experts and is the only comprehensive text on the subject.
