Book excerpt: The goal of this work is to develop novel functionalized block copolymers to promote adhesion at inorganic substrate/polymer interfaces. We envision several potential advantages of functionalized block copolymers over small molecule coupling agents. Greater control over the structure of the interphase region should result through careful design of the backbone of the copolymer. The number of chains per area, the degree of entanglement between the copolymer and the polymer matrix, the number of sites per chain able to attach to the substrate, and the hydrophobicity of the interphase region can all be strongly affected by the choice of block lengths and the monomer sequence. In addition, entanglement between the copolymer and the polymer matrix, if achieved, should contribute significantly to adhesive strength. Our program involves four key elements: the synthesis of suitable functionalized block copolymers, characterization of the conformation of the copolymers at the interface by neutron reflectivity and atomic force microscopy, characterization of the degree of bonding by spectroscopy, and measurement of the mechanical properties of the interface. In this paper we discuss block copolymers designed as adhesion promoters for the copper/epoxy interface. We have synthesized a diblock with one block containing imidazole groups to bond to copper and a second block containing secondary amines to react with the epoxy matrix. We have also prepared a triblock copolymer containing a hydrophobic middle block. Below we describe the synthesis of the block copolymers by living, ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) and the first characterization data obtained by neutron reflectivity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this work was to evaluate chemically-functionalized block copolymers as adhesion promoters for metal/thermoset resin interfaces. Novel block copolymers were synthesized which contain pendant functional groups reactive toward copper and epoxy resins. In particular, imidazole and triazole functionalities that chelate with copper were incorporated onto one block, while secondary amines were incorporated onto the second block. These copolymers were found to self-assemble from solution onto copper surfaces to form monolayers. The structure of the adsorbed monolayers were studied in detail by neutron reflection and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry. The monolayer structure was found to vary markedly with the solution conditions and adsorption protocol. Appropriate conditions were found for which the two blocks form separate layers on the surface with the amine functionalized block exposed at the air surface. Adhesion testing of block copolymer-coated copper with epoxy resins was performed in both lap shear and peel modes. Modest enhancements in bond strengths were observed with the block copolymer applied to the native oxide. However, it was discovered that the native oxide is the weak link, and that by simply removing the native oxide, and then applying an epoxy resin before the native oxide can reform, excellent bond strength in the as-prepared state as well as excellent retention of bond strength after exposure to solder in ambient conditions are obtained. It is recommended that long term aging studies be performed with and without the block copolymer. In addition, the functionalized block copolymer method should be evaluated for another system that has inherently poor bonding, such as the nickel/silicone interface, and for systems involving metals and alloys which form oxides very rapidly, such as aluminum and stainless steel, where bonding strategies involve stabilizing the native oxide.

These are polymers which possess at least two types of functional groups, one which is able to attach to and react with solid surfaces, and another which can react with a thermoset resin, which are incorporated as pendant groups in monomers distributed in blocks (typically two) along the backbone of the chain. The block copolymers in this invention are synthesized by living ring-opening metathesis polymerization.

Book excerpt: Arylamine-containing diblock copolymers were prepared via ring- opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) to afford well-defined phase- separated materials. Alteration of the functionaity in a block, as well as the size of the blocks, allowed for the synthesis of self- assembled monolayers on a copper surface. The arylamine-containing block exhibited a strong binding affinity for the copper surface as seen by neutron reflectivity experiments. In addition, neutron reflectivity data verifies the self-assembly of block copolymer monolayers normal to the copper surface. Block copolymers prepared in this manner allow for the preparation of a wide range of adhesives and corrosion resistant materials. The use of ring-opening metathesis polymerization is important because it permits the synthesis of a variety of functionalized block copolymers.

The program involves four key elements: (i) synthesis of suitable functionalized block copolymers; (ii) characterization of the conformation of the copolymers at the relevant interfaces by neutron reflectivity; (iii) spectroscopic measurements of chemical bonding, and (iv) measurement of the mechanical properties of the interfaces. The copolymers are synthesized by living, ring-opening metathesis polymerization. This relatively new technique allows great flexibility for synthesis of functionalized block copolymers in that the initiators are relatively insensitive to a wide range of functional groups. Significant adhesion enhancement has been observed in lap shear tests.

Book excerpt: Marine biofouling, the settlement of marine organisms on surfaces, is a major problem affecting naval operations and industries including shipping, manufacturing, and water purification. For marine vessels in particular, biofouling leads to increased drag, additional fuel consumption, hull damage, and added maintenance costs. Biocidal coatings containing copper, arsenic, tin, lead, organic biocides, and other are highly effective, and have been used extensively, though these materials are facing increased scrutiny and regulation of coatings. Settlement and adhesion of marine fouling organisms can be effectively controlled using environmentally benign siloxane based coatings. The first study of this work investigates amphiphilic surface active block copolymer additives designed to be incorporated in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) network materials. Subsequent work focuses on di- and triblock copolymers of polystyrene-block-poly(methyl polystyrene-block-poly(methyl vinylsiloxane-random-dimethylsiloxane) and vinylsiloxane-random-dimethylsiloxane)-block- polystyrene (PS-b-P(MVS-ran-DMS)-b-PS) that were designed as hydrophobic, low surface energy backbone materials capable of being functionalized via thiol-ene "click" chemistry. This backbone provides a highly customizable platform for screening a wide array of functional groups for antifouling performance. Thiols of hydrophilic chemical groups such as PEG as well as fluoroalkyl and stable radical groups were synthesized and attached to the polymer to control surface chemistry and antifouling performance. Amphiphilic block copolymers, combining both hydrophilic and hydrophobic components, were shown to be very effective in reducing settlement of marine organisms. Additionally, redox active stable radical groups were introduced and shown to disrupt settlement and adhesion of hard foulers such as barnacles which use oxidative adhesive curing. Block copolymer design can control the surface chemistry and was studied using multiple X-ray spectroscopy methods including near-edge Xray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS). Stratification and self-ordering of these films was examined under water using neutron reflectivity. Because of the dynamic nature of these surfaces, the kinetics of surface rearrangement in aqueous environments can be studied by bubble contact angle under water. The antifouling performance of these materials was investigated through collaborative study of settlement, attachment, and removal of fouling organisms such as algae, diatoms, and barnacles. Highly effective coatings were developed by correlating polymer structure, surface chemistry, surface rearrangement characteristics, and antifouling performance.

Fiberglass-reinforced polymer com posites, similarly, have two (apparently) insurmountable obstacles to per formance: 1) Water can hydrolyze any conceivable bond between organic and inorganic phase, and 2) Stresses across the interface during temperature cycling (resulting from a mismatch in thermal expansion coefficients) may exceed the strength of one of the phases. Organofunctional silanes are hybrid organic-inorganic compounds that are used as coupling agents across the organic-inorganic interface to help overcome these two obstacles to composite performance. One of their functions is to use the hydrolytic action of water under equilibrium condi tions to relieve thermally induced stresses across the interface. If equilib rium conditions can be maintained, the two problems act to cancel each other out. Coupling agents are defined primarily as materials that improve the practical adhesive bond of polymer to mineral. This may involve an increase in true adhesion, but it may also involve improved wetting, rheology, and other handling properties. The coupling agent may also modify the inter phase region to strengthen the organic and inorganic boundary layers.

Book excerpt: Polymers may be classified as either homopolymers, consisting of one single repeating unit, or copolymers, consisting of two or more distinct repeating units. Block copolymers contain long contiguous blocks of two or more repeating units in the same polymer chain. Covering one of the hottest topics in polymer chemistry, Block Copolymers provides a coherent overview of the synthetic routes, physical properties, and applications of block copolymers. This pioneering text provides not only a guideline for developing synthetic strategies for creating block copolymers with defined characteristics, but also a key to the relationship between the physical properties of block copolymers and the structure and dynamics of materials. Covering features of the chemistry and physics of block copolymers that are not found in comparable texts, Block Copolymers illustrates the structure-activity relationship of block copolymers and offers suggestions for the design of specific applications. Divided into five sections-Block Copolymers includes chapters on: * Block Copolymers by Chemical Modification of Precursor Polymers * Nonlinear Block Copolymers * Adsorption of Block Copolymers at Solid-Liquid Interfaces * Theory of Block Copolymer Segregation * Phase Transformation Kinetics * Block Copolymer Morphology * Block Copolymer Dynamics Polymer chemists, physicists, chemical engineers, and materials scientists, as well as graduate students in polymer science, will find Block Copolymers to be an invaluable text.

Book excerpt: A novel methodology has been developed for the formation of block copolymers that combines ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) with functional chain-transfer agents (CTAs), functional chain-terminators (CTs) and self-assembly. Telechelic homopolymers of cyclooctene derivatives that are end-functionalized with hydrogen-bonding or metal-coordination sites are formed via the combination of ROMP with a corresponding functional CTA. These telechelic homopolymers are fashioned with a high control over molecular weight and without the need for post-polymerization procedures. The homopolymers undergo fast and efficient self-assembly with their complement homopolymer or small molecule analogues to form block copolymer architectures. The block copolymers have similar association constants to small molecule analogues described in the literature, regardless of size or the nature of the complementary unit or the polymer side-chain. The ROMP of side-chain functionalized norbornene polymers is coupled with functional CTs to produce block copolymer with main- and side-chain self-assembly sites. Combinations of these norbornene polymers with their complement polymer via self-assembly produce non-covalent AB type block copolymers fast and efficiently. ABA type block copolymers are realized by combining the difunctional homopolymer formed via the CTA pathway with the CT synthesized mono-functional polymer. These polymers show similar association constants regardless of the sequence of polymer formation.
