Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The presidential election of 1884, in which Grover Cleveland ended the Democrats' twenty-four-year presidential drought by defeating Republican challenger James G. Blaine, was one of the gaudiest in American history, remembered today less for its political significance than for the mudslinging and slander that characterized the campaign. But a closer look at the infamous election reveals far more complexity than previous stereotypes allowed, argues Mark Summers. Behind all the mud and malarkey, he says, lay a world of issues and consequences. Summers suggests that both Democrats and Republicans sensed a political system breaking apart, or perhaps a new political order forming, as voters began to drift away from voting by party affiliation toward voting according to a candidate's stand on specific issues. Mudslinging, then, was done not for public entertainment but to tear away or confirm votes that seemed in doubt. Uncovering the issues that really powered the election and stripping away the myths that still surround it, Summers uses the election of 1884 to challenge many of our preconceptions about Gilded Age politics.

Book excerpt: This reference traces the historical background of editorial cartooning and presents works that chronicle the history and criticize the aesthetics of the art. It also describes anthologies and exhibition catalogs that reprint editorial cartoons, and provides a list of libraries, museums, and historical societies which house originals and photocopies or clippings of editorial cartoons. This expansive volume examines the American editorial cartoon from its beginnings in 1747 into the second Clinton administration. It fills a gap in the literature, providing comprehensive information on a field of growing interest to scholars and collectors. This reference guide studies the evolution of editorial cartooning and places it in its historical context and provides appreciation and criticism of the cartoons presented. In addition to political cartoons, underground, radical, and propaganda cartoons are also discussed in this volume. The appendixes offer important cross-reference tools such as a chronology and include listings of selected historical periodicals, theses, and dissertations covering political cartoons. This work will be of value to a broad spectrum of readers—from collectors to scholars—and is suitable for many fields of study.

Blaine in the elections of 1876, 1880, 1884, 1888, and 1892. It discusses at length his convention loss in 1876 and his loss of the presidential election to Grover Cleveland in 1884. In losing, Blaine received a greater percentage of the popular vote than did eight candidates who won the presidency. The Appendix contains scores of hard-to-find letters, charts, tables, and telegrams, including the text of all the famous Mulligan letters and other letters used by Blaine in his defense before the House of Representatives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A very broad, balanced, accessible account of the Gilded Age (1865-1901) that includes all the recent scholarship on this period and offers a portrait of the economic, political, social and cultural history of the age. American resourcefulness is shown at its best and worst. Discusses how the conservatism of thought and radicalism of technological change remade the Gilded Age, and how society tempered the applications of each. So, too, are mainstream politics and religion. This is a rich, colorful narrative about a complex period in American history.
