Book excerpt: "Fruitcake Hill" is a cleverly written history and personal memoir of an Irish family from the Chicago suburbs that has continuously occupied a single farmhouse property for over 137 years. The story focuses on the family's struggles to preserve the life they knew before urban sprawl became a reality. A humorous and informative read! About the Author Gerald J. Kuecher was born in 1951, the seventh of Babe and Bob Kuecher's 13 children. This strawberry blonde was tough and competitive after years of battling with his big athletic brothers yet he developed a sense of compassion that included crying at strangers' funerals as an altar boy. This marked duality shaped his life. As a teenager, Gerald became interested in the physical sciences after reading reports by the Illinois Geological Survey concerning the glacial history of the Palos area. He went on to earn a Ph.D. in Geology and has published numerous technical articles. This book is his first venture into non-technical literature.

Book excerpt: This sequel documents the author’s journey from a simple farmhouse near Chicago to a number of amazing work locations far afield. The author contrasts his risk taking as a Midwestern youth with his life today, focused on his family and the joys of geologic discovery. He also makes numerous observations on the oil business and the differences between foreign workplaces regarding ethics, character, religions, customs, and etiquette. Fruitcake Hill and Beyond is a spirited read for those currently practicing or preparing to work in the arena of international exploration, petroleum service, development, the State Department, or other expatriate positions in foreign countries and missions. About the Author: Gerald J. Kuecher grew up in a Catholic family of 13 children in the southwestern suburbs of Chicago in the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s. Gerald completed his B.S. at Western Illinois University in 1973, his M.S. at Northeastern Illinois in 1982, and his Ph.D. at Louisiana State University in 1994. Between these dates and until his partial retirement in 2013, Gerald lived and worked as an expatriate consultant petroleum geologist in a number of intriguing locations, including St. Thomas of the US Virgin Islands, Trinidad, the Nile Delta and Gulf of Suez regions of Egypt, the Caspian Sea region of Kazakhstan, the Celtic Sea of Ireland, the Malacca Straits and the Natuna Sea of Indonesia, the eastern sector of Saudi Arabia, and the Gulf of Mexico. His interpretation of international cultures, religions and people in remote regions is interesting, humorous, and balanced.

Book excerpt: Be it a birthday or a wedding—let them eat cake. Encased in icing, crowned with candles, emblazoned with congratulatory words—cake is the ultimate food of celebration in many cultures around the world. But how did cake come to be the essential food marker of a significant occasion? In Cake: A Global History, Nicola Humble explores the meanings, legends, rituals, and symbolism attached to cake through the ages. Humble describes the many national differences in cake-making techniques, customs, and regional histories—from the French gâteau Paris-Brest, named for a cycle race and designed to imitate the form of a bicycle wheel, to the American Lady Baltimore cake, likely named for a fictional cake in a 1906 novel by Owen Wister. She also details the role of cake in literature, art, and film—including Miss Havisham’s imperishable wedding cake in Great Expectations and Marcel Proust’s madeleine of memory—as well as the art and architecture of cake making itself. Featuring a large selection of mouthwatering images, as well as many examples and recipes for some particularly unusual cakes, Cake will provide many sweet reasons for celebration.

Book excerpt: "Flint Hills Cook Book" is a recipe book compiled by the women of Christ Church Parish, Burlington, Iowa. The preface explains, " There is a custom, hoary with the accumulated dust of ages, originating many a long century ago, in a certain, but now extinct "garden," of which we all know more or less, viz: That man will and must eat. Out of the helplessness of man there has grown another custom, equally old, (some say even older) that women shall set before him that which shall satisfy man's hunger. From that day to this women have vied with one another for pre-eminence in culinary art. Now any man will tell you that in this art, there has been vouchsafed to some a greater measure of perfection than to others. With this thought in mind, it has been the effort of the compilers to gather together and set forth in the pages of this book the proudest achievements of the best cooks to be found among the women of Christ Church Parish and others of the city of Burlington, Iowa."
