Im folgenden Kapitel werden die Grundlagen der frühkindlichen Regulation vorgestellt, die in die Vorstellung der verschiedenen Erscheinungsformen von frühkindlichen Regulationsstörungen münden. Dabei habe ich mich auf die drei häufigsten Störungsbilder exzessives Schreien, Schlafstörungen und Fütterstörungen (ohne Gedeihstörungen) konzentriert. Störungen der emotionalen Verhaltensregulation, die eher bei Kleinkindern vorkommen, werden hier nicht explizit behandelt. Einen breiten Raum nehmen auch die pränatalen, perinatalen und postnatalen Risiken und das kindliche Temperament ein, die zu den Entstehungsbedingungen der frühen Regulationsstörungen beitragen. Das Konzept des „Goodness of fit“ wird vorgestellt und es wird belegt, welche Störungen in welchen Phasen der Entwicklung des Kindes gehäuft auftreten. Anschließend wird der Frage nach den Auswirkungen auf das Familiensystem und das Kind nachgegangen. Die zentrale Fragestellung bezieht sich darauf, wie betroffenen Familien geholfen werden kann. Welche professionelle, familiäre und organisierte Form der Unterstützung steht den Familien zur Verfügung? Die Langzeitauswirkungen von frühen Regulationsstörungen werden dabei nur am Rande gestreift, es geht vielmehr um Hilfestellung in den akuten Phasen.
