Book excerpt: A poignant story of faith, family, and country that reveals the courage it takes to try, succeed, and live to tell about life's often-improbable journey. --Linda Lingle Governor of Hawaii (2002-2010) The inspirational story of a young girl's journey from the family farm to a seat at the table with the most powerful civilian and military men in the world. Raised on the family farm in Central Minnesota, Denise Jelinski-Hall attended a one-room country school through the fifth grade and never dreamed of opportunities beyond her rural community. After graduating from high school, she took an assembly-line job as a seamstress, then became a teller at the local bank. One day, a chance observation by a member of the Minnesota Army National Guard changed her life forever: "I see so much more potential in you, Denise. Why don't you join the Air Force and get out of this town?" Over the next three decades, Denise rose through the ranks, ultimately serving as the first woman to be the Senior Enlisted Advisor to the chief of the National Bureau, a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS). In this position, she became the first woman to serve as a Senior Enlisted Advisor to a member of the JCS--the highest position ever achieved by an enlisted woman in the history of the US military. Denise's memoir demonstrates what one person can achieve with a strong work ethic and a desire to serve. It is a timeless American story of success, determination, perseverance, and faith. This story is an inspiration to those in the military. Denise is a role model for leadership in the corporate world and an example of achievement to those looking for self-improvement. --Sergeant Major of the Army Kenneth O. Preston United States Army (ret.)

It is the single most important philosophy that has driven America's success since the beginning. Freedom, however, is an expensive luxury to secure, and that is why America strives to be the leading force in military might and power. Americans are accustomed to this luxury and in ways they have taken it for granted. The dreaded day of 9/11 opened the eyes of millions of Americans when the US homeland was attacked. Its enemies exploited a weakness in general security and utilized that weakness to promote fear and chaos! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perversion of the Pentagon Papers Trial By: David R. Nissen For the first time, former federal prosecutor, David Nissen, reveals the true story behind the Pentagon Paper Trial. A United States District Court judge, obsessed with obtaining higher public office was assigned to preside over the criminal trial. The judge was convinced that any conviction of the defendants would be overturned on appeal and would leave a mark on his record that could disqualify him for a higher position. To avoid this, he decided to prevent the jury from returning a guilty verdict and disclosed his plan to some of his confidants. Perversion of the Pentagon Papers Trial recounts the political backdrop against which the original crimes were committed then takes readers into the courtroom for a virtual front row seat throughout the trial. It chronicles the judge’s capitulation to the defendants’ demands, discloses the fictitious defenses he fabricated and his collaboration with the defense to place the government on trial by groundless “investigations”. By bringing the facts to light, Nissen reveals the court’s sabotage of the trial and exposes the injustice done in this notable court case.

Book Synopsis Transforming the Prairies by : Shannon Stunden Bower
Download or read book Transforming the Prairies written by Shannon Stunden Bower and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transforming the Prairies proposes a new understanding of Canada’s Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration (PFRA), complicating common views of the agency as a model of effective government environmental management. Between 1935 and 2009, the PFRA promoted agricultural rehabilitation in and beyond the Canadian Prairies with mixed and equivocal results. The promotion of strip farming as a soil conservation technique, for example, left crops susceptible to sawfly infestations. The PFRA’s involvement in irrigation development in Ghana increased the local population’s vulnerability to various illnesses. And PFRA infrastructure construction intended to serve the public good failed to account for the interests of affected Indigenous peoples. The PFRA is revealed as being a high modernist state agency that produced varied environmental outcomes and that contributed to consolidating colonialism and racism. This investigation affirms the importance of engaging historical perspectives to help ensure that contemporary environmental management efforts support more just and sustainable futures.

Download or read book The Complex written by Nick Turse and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2009-03-03 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is the new, hip, high-tech military-industrial complex--an omnipresent, hidden-in-plain-sight system of systems that penetrates all our lives. From iPods to Starbucks to Oakley sunglasses, historian Nick Turse explores the Pentagon's little-noticed contacts (and contracts) with the products and companies that now form the fabric of America. Turse investigates the remarkable range of military incursions into the civilian world: the Pentagon's collaborations with Hollywood filmmakers; its outlandish schemes to weaponize the wild kingdom; its joint ventures with the World Wrestling Federation and NASCAR. He shows the inventive ways the military, desperate for new recruits, now targets children and young adults, tapping into the "culture of cool" by making "friends" on MySpace. We are a long way from Eisenhower's military-industrial complex: this is its twenty-first-century progeny.--From publisher description.
