In grammar it covers a host of areas of immense theoretical interest, including description, methodology, epistemology and explanation. This book sets out to deal with the concept by investigating the major works of those grammarians who have contributed most in theoretical terms to its development and elaboration in the Arabic Grammatical Tradition. It seeks to do so by considering the relation between grammar, on the one hand, and jurisprudence and theology, on the other. In dealing with the above issues an appeal is made, both directly and indirectly, to some of the relevant ideas in the philosophy of science as they apply to this tradition. The approach adopted is cross-disciplinary in orientation to reflect the centrality of taclil in the Arabic intellectual tradition, and reference is therefore made to the employment of this concept in jurisprudence and, to a lesser extent, theology. This is the first major study in any European language or in Arabic to be published on the topic. FIrst, intellectual curiosity led them to investigate the language and its structures. SEcondly, the desire to better understand the holy text of the Qur an made Arabic grammar indispensable. THe intellectual curiosity as well as the interconnection between grammar and the study of religion can be seen in the grammarians' writings and theories in general and in this book in particular. The book consists of a critical edition and the analysis of an early treatise in the field of Arabic grammar, based on two manuscripts located in England and Egypt. THe work's title is Mizan al-arabiyya which literally means 'the balance, or scales, of Arabic.' It is a pedagogical work dedicated to Arabic grammar and written by the famous Arabic grammarian Ibn al- Anbari (died 577/1181) who is probably best known for his al- Insaf fi masa il al- ilaf bayn al-nahwiyyin al-basriyyin wa-l-kufiyyin, a collection of Streitfragen (controversial issues) attributed to the Basran and Kufan grammarians. AMong his rather few other extant treatises is the celebrated Asrar al-arabiyya, mostly dedicated to theoretical reasoning behind linguistic facts. IN addition to the critical edition of Mizan al-arabiyya, the book also contains a detailed comparison between this work and the above-mentioned Asrar al-arabiyya, both written by the same author.

Carter's Sibawyhi's Principles: Arabic Grammar and Law in Early Islamic Thought is a corrected version, with considerable Addenda, of his 1968 Oxford doctoral thesis, "Sibawayhi's Principles of Grammatical Analysis." It systematically argues that the science of Arabic grammar owes its origins to a special application of a set of methods and criteria developed independently to form the Islamic legal system, not to Greek or other foreign influence. These methods and criteria were then adapted to create a grammatical system brought to perfection by Sibawayhi in the late second/eighth century. It describes the intimate contacts between early jurists and scholars of language out of which the new science of grammar evolved, and makes detailed comparisons between the technical terms of law and grammar to show how the vocabulary of the law was applied to the speech of the Arabs. It also sheds light on Sibawayhi's method in producing his magisterial Kitab.
