Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book Sonja Krause Goodwin recounts her experience joining the Peace Corps in 1964 and describes the training she underwent to teach in Nigeria at Columbia Teachers College in New York City. Goodwin tells readers about her service as a University teacher in physics while also serving as head of the Physics Department at Lagos University in Nigeria. She also describes her vacation travels during that time, mostly in Nigeria— including an attempt to climb Mt. Cameroon. She writes about her interactions with her students, her fellow University teachers and other University employees, her fellow Peace Corps volunteers and other expatriates, and Nigerians whom she met under during her travels. Goodwin also delves into the politically motivated “university crisis” that led to the exodus from the university and Nigeria of almost all the expatriate teaching staff of the university including the Peace Corps volunteers. She also discusses some of her work for the West African Examinations Council and the Aptitude Testing Unit in Lagos while waiting to be sent to another assignment for her second year in the Peace Corps.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until the early twentieth century, teachers went abroad with assumptions of their own superiority. But by the mid-twentieth century, they became far more self-questioning about their social assumptions, their educational theories, and the complexity of their role in a foreign society. Drawing on extensive archives of teachers' letters and accounts, Zimmerman's narrative explores the teachers' shifting attitudes about their country and themselves, in a world that was more unexpected than they could have imagined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hilda and Kirt Bromley have set up fifty-three libraries in rural communities in Ghana, West Africa. Responding to a call from the Lord, the Bromleys trusted in Him to provide. They set up a nonprofit organization, collected books, raised funds for shipping, and then traveled to Ghana to meet with local communities to help set up their libraries. The Bromleys view the work as a mission from God to provide opportunities for people in rural areas where textbooks and educational resources are very limited. “The Glory of God is the person fully alive” is the motto of Books for Africa Library Project. This book relates the experiences of this mission from its inception in 1996 to the present time, working with rural communities setting up libraries. There are also stories of Hilda’s childhood in the British colony of the Gold Coast, her youth as a national runner honored by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the first president of Ghana, her intercultural marriage with Kirt, and their work with AA and Al-Anon in Ghana. Their stories relate the faithfulness of God from the time when the Lord first spoke to Hilda, “Go build Me a library in Kukurantumi.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brief, interpretive history of American schooling focuses on the evolving relationship between education and social change. Like its predecessors, this new edition adopts a thematic approach, investigating the impact of social forces such as industrialization, urbanization, immigration, globalization, and cultural conflict on the development of schools and other educational institutions. It also examines the various ways that schools have contributed to social change, particularly in enhancing the status and accomplishments of certain social groups and not others. Detailed accounts of the experiences of women and minority groups in American history consider how their lives have been affected by education, while "Focal Point" sections within each chapter allow the reader to hone in on key moments in history and their relevance within the broader scope of American schooling from the colonial era to the present. This new edition has been comprehensively updated and edited for greater readability and clarity. It offers a revised final chapter, updated to include recent change in education politics and policy, in particular the decline of No Child Left Behind and the impact of the Common Core and movements against it. Further additions include enhanced coverage of colonial and early post-colonial American schooling, added materials on persistent issues such as race in education, an updated discussion of the GED program, and a closer look at the role of technology in schools. With its nuanced treatment of both historical and contemporary factors influencing the modern school system, this book remains an excellent resource for investigating and critiquing the social, economic, and cultural development of American education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I'm always impressed by pioneering efforts. This anthology represents a noteworthy beginning for this group of writers. From the triumphs over adversity dramatized in the first section, to the heartwarming and heartbreaking stories and poems of the final grouping, they show us sensitivity and inspire strength. They show us disability as it is lived honestly. Fables, fantasies, and tips about writing add something new, making this publication a unique contribution to disability literature."-Erik Weihenmayer, author of Touch the Top of the World and The Adversity Advantage Disabled people, in most ways, are just like everyone else. So it should come as no surprise that the stories, essays, and poems in Behind Our Eyes deal with situations and emotions that confront all of us: family and marriage, love and heartbreak, discord, appreciation of nature, and the desire to engage in the world more fully. In this uplifting collection, we read about the dedication of a guide dog who protects a blind woman and her young children from a burglar until police arrive; the inner struggle for a stroke victim whose world is rearranged overnight; the challenges faced by disabled children, spouses, and seniors when their families see their limitations instead of their abilities; the difficulty faced by a blind man coping with a team of insensitive doctors and nurses who seem to keep forgetting he can't see; and much more. A real and candid portrait of life with disability as well as an entertaining foray into the minds and hearts of a beautifully diverse group of people, Behind Our Eyes urges and inspires us to meet even our loftiest goals, embrace our individual vulnerabilities, and let our own imaginations soar.

A companion to earlier volumes on philosophy of education and curriculum studies, the historians in this volume reflect a wide variety of interests that underlay accomplishment in this scholarly field. They come from diverse backgrounds that have animated their scholarly careers in compelling ways. Readers in any variety of educational or historical study should learn from this volume how unplanned careers can still result in highly successful sets of accomplishments. That realization is a tribute both to the individual contributors and to the great attractiveness of educational history to committed scholars of various backgrounds and orientations.
