Book excerpt: This book identifies the impact of internal and external stakeholders on the implementation of sustainable development policies in the coal mining sector in Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States. The book assesses what activities and conditions need to be improved so that sustainable development policies can be more effectively and efficiently implemented. With a specific focus on the hard coal and lignite mining sectors, it examines a broad range of case studies from Eastern European countries and the Commonwealth of Independent States, including Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Kazakhstan, Germany, Spain, France and the United Kingdom, among many more. Beginning with an introduction to sustainable development and stakeholder theory, Part II then examines internal stakeholders, including owners, managers, employees and trade unions. Part III examines external stakeholders, touching upon those directly related to the mining industry, such as customers and mining enterprises, and those not directly associated such as local and regional communities and environmental organisations. The book concludes by proposing a model approach to the management of stakeholders involved in mining enterprises, focusing on improving the process of implementing sustainable development in the mining sector and strengthening the effects of this process. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of the extractive industries, natural resource management and policy and sustainable development.

The book treats the subject from a global perspective, giving readers insights into what is happening in the emerging economies of the world and possible solutions to problems. It also provides all the parameters necessary to evaluate economic viability of undertaking a mining venture, taking into consideration demands of sustainable mining – social responsibly, environmental pollution control measures, community development, and precautions necessary for ensuring health and safety in the hazardous conditions of mining operations. In recent years, supply chain management has grown in importance as it forms tighter links in integration of key business processes from initial extraction of raw phosphate rock to end customers through different stages of process techniques. The book surveys the changes in technology, including many game-changing innovations that could transform mining. Presents a purposive classification of resources, status of global phosphate rock reserves, and their life-indices Covers mining conditions and possibilities of improvement in methods of exploration and environmental impact Includes economic considerations for resource assessment, mining, quality control and supply problems

The essays collected in this volume explore this history with different emphases and questions. The range of topics also reflects this broad approach. The first section contains contributions on political, social and economic history. They address the European energy system in the globalised world of the 20th and 21st centuries as well as specific social policies in mining regions. The second section then focuses on the medialisation of mining and its legacies, also paying attention to the environmental history of mining. The anthology, which goes back to a conference of the same name at the Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum, thus offers a multi-faceted insight into the research field of modern mining history.

Book excerpt: Rockburst: Mechanisms, Monitoring, Warning and Mitigation invites the most relevant researchers and practitioners worldwide to discuss the rock mechanics phenomenon related to increased stress and energy levels in intact rock introduced by drilling, explosion, blasting and other activities. When critical energy levels are reached, rockbursts can occur causing human and material losses in mining and tunneling environments. This book is the most comprehensive information source in English to cover rockbursts. Comprised of four main parts, the book covers in detail the theoretical concepts related to rockbursts, and introduces the current computational modeling techniques and laboratory tests available. The second part is devoted to case studies in mining (coal and metal) and tunneling environments worldwide. The third part covers the most recent advances in measurement and monitoring. Special focus is given to the interpretation of signals and reliability of systems. The following part addresses warning and risk mitigation through the proposition of a single risk assessment index and a comprehensive warning index to portray the stress status of the rock and a successful case study. The final part of the book discusses mitigation including best practices for distressing and efficiently supporting rock. Designed to provide the most comprehensive coverage, the book will provide practicing mining and tunneling engineers the theoretical background needed to better cope with the phenomenon, practical advice from case studies and practical mitigation actions and techniques. Academics in rock mechanics will appreciate this complete reference to rockburst, which features how to analyze stress signals and use computational modeling more efficiently. Offers understanding of the fundamental theoretical concepts of rockbursts Explores how to analyze signals from current monitoring systems Shows how to apply mitigating techniques in current work Identifies characteristics that should be measured in order to detect rockburst risk

Book excerpt: The UK government's pit closure programme dramatically highlights the steady decline of heavy industry, especially coal and steel, during the post-war period, in many industrial regions of Europe. Whilst the political controversy over pit closures may have died down in the UK, the problem remains for planners and policy makers of regenerating areas which previously had high levels of employment and strong communities.

Book excerpt: The hard coal industry in western Europe has been in decline for many years. This study examines its future prospects and finds no reason to believe that the trend will be reversed. The author shows how the manner and rate of this decline will continue to be determined as much by political as by economic factors, including the politics of environmental controls and market liberalization, where developments have been increasingly unfavourable to coal. A centrally directed policy by the European Union to protect indigenous coal production has never seemed likely, with the policies of member states showing wide divergences. Above all, there has been a marked contrast between the UK policy of rapid contraction of its relatively efficient industry, and the German policy of continuing massive subsidization of its very high-cost industry, with slow adaptation by consensus. This great anomaly cannot be understood without looking at the politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr Parnell provides a two-level analysis of the politics of government-industry relations in Germany. On the one hand, he presents an in-depth examination of the politics of the German coal industry. On the other, he offers a more general account of the characteristic relationship between state and industry in one of the most successful post-war economies. He argues that the crucial concept in understanding those relations is Selbstverwaltung (self-government). This notion, despite evolving over time, displays a continuity in its key features that serves to elucidate the unique position of the state in government-industry relations in Germany. The author argues that by shedding further light on existing theories of organized capitalism and corporatism, the notion of self-government can provide a basis for the analysis of broader socio-economic relations within the German-speaking world, and, in particular, the German economy's continued success.

Presents an assessment by the Energy Information Administration of the outlook for internationalenergy markets through 2040. The International Energy Outlook 2013 (IEO2013) projects that world energy consumption will grow by 56 percent between 2010 and 2040. Total world energy use rises from 524 quadrillion British thermal units (Btu) in 2010 to 630 quadrillion Btu in 2020 and to 820 quadrillion Btu in 2040 (Figure 1). Much of the growth in energy consumption occurs in countries outside the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD),2 known as non-OECD, where demand is driven by strong, long-term economic growth. Energy use in non-OECD countries increases by 90 percent; in OECD countries, the increase is 17 percent. The IEO2013 Reference case does not incorporate prospective legislation or policies that might affect energy markets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long-term future for coal looks bleak. The recent UN climate change conference in Paris called for an end to the use of fossil fuels. However, coal remains one of the world’s most important sources of energy, fuelling more than 40% of electricity generation worldwide, with many developing nations relying almost wholly on coal-fuelled electricity. Coal has been the fastest growing energy source in recent years and is essential for many industrial activities, but the coal industry is hugely damaging for the environment. A major driver in climate change and causing around 40% of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions, coal fuel comes at a high environmental price. Furthermore, mining and air pollution kill thousands each year. A timely addition to the series, this book critically reviews the role of coal in the 21st century, examining energy needs, usage and health implications. With case studies and an examination of future developments and economics, this text provides an essential update on an environmental topic the world cannot ignore.
