Book Synopsis Routledge Handbook of the History of Women’s Economic Thought by : Kirsten Madden
Download or read book Routledge Handbook of the History of Women’s Economic Thought written by Kirsten Madden and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The marginalization of women in economics has a history as long as the discipline itself. Throughout the history of economics, women contributed substantial novel ideas, methods of inquiry, and analytical insights, with much of this discounted, ignored, or shifted into alternative disciplines and writing outlets. This handbook presents new and much-needed analytical research of women’s contributions in the history of economic thought, focusing primarily on the period from the 1770s into the beginning of the 21st century. Chapters address the institutional, sociological and historical factors that have influenced women economists’ thinking, and explore women’s contributions to economic analysis, method, policies and debates. Coverage is international, moving beyond Europe and the US into the Arab world, China, India, Japan, Latin America, Russia and the Soviet Union, and sub-Saharan Africa. This new global perspective adds depth as well as scope to our understanding of women’s contribution to the history of economic thought. The book offers crucial new insights into previously underexplored work by women in the history of economic thought, and will prove to be a seminal volume with relevance beyond that field, into women’s studies, sociology, and history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 'Neal, the Miller: A Son of Liberty' written by James Otis, readers are transported back to colonial America and introduced to the protagonist Neal, a young miller who becomes involved in the Sons of Liberty movement. The book is written in a descriptive and engaging style, with vivid depictions of life during the American Revolution. Otis skillfully integrates historical events with fictional characters, giving readers a glimpse into the struggles and triumphs of the period. The book's themes of freedom, loyalty, and sacrifice are explored through Neal's journey as he navigates the turbulent political landscape of the time. James Otis, a descendant of the famous patriot of the same name, was inspired to write 'Neal, the Miller' by his family's legacy and his passion for American history. His detailed research and personal connection to the subject matter shine through in the authenticity of the characters and settings he creates. Otis's background as a historian and storyteller lends credibility to the narrative, making the book a valuable contribution to the genre of historical fiction. I highly recommend 'Neal, the Miller: A Son of Liberty' to readers interested in American history, particularly the American Revolution. Otis's compelling storytelling and meticulous attention to detail make this book a captivating and educational read for anyone looking to delve into the events and personalities that shaped our nation's founding.

Book Synopsis The Reformer by : Stephen F. Williams
Download or read book The Reformer written by Stephen F. Williams and published by Encounter Books. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Besides absolutists of the right (the tsar and his adherents) and left (Lenin and his fellow Bolsheviks), the Russian political landscape in 1917 featured moderates seeking liberal reform and a rapid evolution towards a constitutional monarchy. Vasily Maklakov, a lawyer, legislator and public intellectual, was among the most prominent of these, and the most articulate and sophisticated advocate of the rule of law, the linchpin of liberalism. This book tells the story of his efforts and his analysis of the reasons for their ultimate failure. It is thus, in part, an example for movements seeking to liberalize authoritarian countries today—both as a warning and a guide. Although never a cabinet member or the head of his political party—the Constitutional Democrats or “Kadets”—Maklakov was deeply involved in most of the political events of the period. He was defense counsel for individuals resisting the regime (or charged simply for being of the wrong ethnicity, such as Menahem Beilis, sometimes considered the Russian Dreyfus). He was continuously a member of the Kadets’ central committee and their most compelling orator. As a somewhat maverick (and moderate) Kadet, he stood not only between the country’s absolute extremes (the reactionary monarchists and the revolutionaries), but also between the two more or less liberal centrist parties, the Kadets on the center left, and the Octobrists on the center right. As a member of the Second, Third and Fourth Dumas (1907-1917), he advocated a wide range of reforms, especially in the realms of religious freedom, national minorities, judicial independence, citizens’ judicial remedies, and peasant rights.
