Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches in North America: With Some Account of Congress and of the Slavery Question This little volume has its origin in a belief that, at the present time, when the condition of the American Republic is creating such intense interest, some account of the Slavery Question, which has led to the great events going on there, and of the Parliament of the Union, might be welcome to English readers. To these I have added a few sketches of various points of interest that have come under my notice in North America. Our American friends need not be surprised that British writers should mark particularly those points in which we may suppose that their institutions are not working satisfactorily. We have a tendency in the same direction; and it is very important for us to gather any indications we can of where that direction leads. There are spots on the sun; and there is so much genius, greatness, and goodness in the people of the United States, that they can well afford to admit a few defects mingling with these. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Friendly Craft: A Collection of American Letters This collection represents the gleanings of several years in some of the pleasant by-paths of American literature. Personal considerations have so frequently determined the selection that no defence can be offered against criticism. The reflection of a bit of bygone life, an odd or whimsical view of a situation, a swift and unconscious revelation of character, often merely the happy or individual turn of a phrase, - these and causes as slight have governed choice; while for no graver reasons other far weightier and perhaps worthier material has been rejected. Yet personal choice alone did not control; many letters that I wished to include are not here because of the impossibility of securing the copyright privilege. To many librarians in many places I am grateful for patient and cheerful attention, and I am glad of this opportunity to express my appreciation of services without which the student's task would indeed be overwhelming. In particular, I would record the indebtedness of many years to the librarians of the Smith College Library and of the Forbes Library of Northampton, Mass. One more debt - and that the largest - must be acknowledged. From the first suggestion of this collection until the reading of the last page of proof, I have been aided constantly by my mother; and had my wish prevailed, her name would have stood on the title-page. To the editors and publishers who have courteously granted the use of material from their publications, I offer my sincere thanks. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Friendly Faces: Of Three Nationalities Some of these sketches have appeared in Eng lish and American periodicals, others are now published for the first time. I make no apology for the introduction of one living personage into a little portrait gallery devoted to figures mostly long passed away. The founder of the Salvation Army may be said to have belonged to history for already a quarter of a century. My best thanks are due to R. D. Cooper, Esq., of Needham Market, for kindly permitting a photograph of the cartoon in the apple-chamber, also to Mr. A. White, photographic artist, Ipswich, for his admirable reproduction of the same. The Suffolk Views were taken for me by his late father a few years ago. The portrait of W. J. Fox was presented to me (1868 - 70) by his daughter, the late Mrs. G. Fox. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. He had not therefore been back more than a year, before his society'was courted by some of the best men in the country; but previous to his settling himself into a home, he thought it but proper to tra vel through his own country also. His Old friend, still at his elbow, accompanied him; but at the close of the excursion, which lasted nearly two years, he was taken ill of a fever caught from an exposure near the Lakes, and died after a few days' illness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prominent Americans: Interested in Japan and Prominent Japanese in America The first felling of friendship between the United States and Japan began with the visit to Japan of Commodore Perry, of the American navy. Ever since that memorable voyage Japan has felt that the awakening of the Far East, and the great benefit she herself has received from her acceptance of Western civilization, were due to the stimulus and inspiration given by the United States. In the half century that has followed, the friendship of the two nations has been strengthened by means of a rapidly developing commerce. No American should be ignorant of the fact that among the people of Japan there is a sincere and deep-rooted friendship for the people of the United States. "Japan and America" was founded in this city in July, 1901, and the "Japanese-American Commercial Weekly" in December, 1900, for the purpose of helping to maintain and promote friendly and commercial relations between America and Japan. They are endeavoring to draw the peoples of the two countries closer together in all their relations of life - in trade, in art, in literature - and in sympathy with each other in the broad purpose, shared by both in common, of world-civilization. Both nations, it should be remembered, are engaged upon the solution of the same grave and important problem - the civilization and uplifting of inferior races. That the efforts of this periodical have been widely appreciated is shown by the fact that "Japan and America" and the "Japanese-American Commercial Weekly" now have a large and in creasing circulation in the United States and in Japan. We here present portraits and biographical sketches of prominent Americans who are interested in Japan, and of Japanese who are interested in America. The Americans who are most interested in Japan are well known to the older people in Japan, but not to the younger generation. It is our purpose to make known to this class such of the successful Americans as they ought to know. In like manner, the sketches tell Americans of some of the successful men of Japan. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aristocracy in America, Vol. 1 of 2: From the Sketch-Book of a German Nobleman I herewi'i'h submit to the British Public a work principally intended for the benefit of the American. Both people, however, are so intimately connected by the ties of friendship and consanguinity, and so many errors and faults of the Americans - as, indeed, most of their virtues - are so clearly and distinctly to be traced to their British origin, that the perusal of the following pages may, perhaps, be not altogether uninteresting to the readers of both countries.
