Book excerpt: If one schematically compares the three principal tendencies in psychotherapy (Freudian, Jungian, Adlerian) with regard to the direction in which their central thought leads, one could say: - The analytical method of Sigmund Freud looks for the causae efficientes, the causes of the later behavioural disturbances. Alfred Adler considers and treats the initial situation with regard to a causa finalis and both see in the drives the causae materiales. In Carl Gustav Jung's case the term 'synthesis' is based on his abandonment of the causal thinking of the alternative psychological methods of treatment. Jungian psychotherapy, therefore, is not an analytical procedure in the usual meaning of this term. Whatever the differences among Freud's, Jung's and Adler's extensive works on the therapeutic methodologies; scientists, artists, thinkers and practitioners accept the great importance of Adler's, Freud's and Jung's studies for medicine, psychology, anthropology, religion, art, history, literature, etc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analytic interpretation is fundamental to the process of psychoanalysis, Jungian analysis, and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Interpretation is the medium by which the psychoanalytic art form is transmitted. What one chooses to say in analysis, why one chooses it, how one says it, when one says it; these are the building blocks of the interpretive process and the focus of Interpretation in Jungian Analysis: Art and Technique. This volume is the first of its kind in the literature of analytical psychology. Until now, the process of interpretation has been addressed only briefly in general Jungian texts. Interpretation in Jungian Analysis provides an in-depth exploration of the process, including the history of analytic technique, the role of language in analytic therapy, the poetics and metaphor of interpretation, and the relationship between interpretation and the analytic attitude. In addition, the steps involved with the creation of clear, meaningful, and transformative interpretations are plainly outlined. Throughout the book, clinical examples and reader exercises are provided to deepen the learning experience. The influence of the Jungian perspective on the interpretative process is outlined, as are the use of analytic reverie and confrontation during the analytic process. In addition to the historical, technical, and theoretic aspects of interpretation, this book also focuses on the artistic and creative elements that are often overlooked in the interpretive process. Ultimately, cultivating fluidity within the interpretive process is essential to engaging the depth and complexity of the psyche. Interpretation in Jungian Analysis will be of great interest to psychoanalysts and psychotherapists of all theoretical orientations and will be essential reading for students of analytical psychology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents a vision of contemporary Freudian psychoanalysis. The contributors show how modern Freudian analysts have translated and retranslated the contributions of analysts on whose shoulders they stand, including Freud, Winnicott, Loewald, Ferenczi and others, and synthesized them into a new conception of Freudian theory and technique. The opening chapters provide a theoretical overview, demonstrating the evolution of Freudian theory and ways in which different theories can be integrated. The latter chapters, forming the bulk of the volume, translate that frame into clinical process.Analysts confronted with clinical dilemmas - for example, patients who cannot, for various reasons, use interpretations productively - find ways to address these dilemmas while deepening the analytic process. The reader will find that a new synthesis has taken place in which the relationship with the analyst is a crucial element in setting the stage for patients to take a closer look into their inner world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authoritative edition of Jung’s essential writings for understanding his early enthusiasm for—and later split with—Freud and psychoanalysis Freud and Psychoanalysis gathers Jung’s writings on Freud and psychoanalysis published between 1906 and 1916, along with two later, related papers. The book covers the period of the enthusiastic collaboration between the two pioneers of psychology through the years when Jung’s growing appreciation of religious experience, his criticism of Freud’s emphasis on pathology, and other differences led to Jung’s formal break with his mentor. Part I features brief studies of Freud’s theory of hysteria, dream analysis, the psychology of rumor, and other subjects. Parts II and III contain the essentials of the criticism that led to Jung’s rupture with Freud, the most important of which is “The Theory of Psychoanalysis.” Part IV presents “The Significance of the Father in the Destiny of the Individual.” The book’s final two pieces, “Freud and Jung: Contrasts” and the introduction to a book by W. M. Kranefeldt, further illuminate Jung’s reassessment of psychoanalysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Theory of Psychoanalysis" by Carl Gustav Jung, published in 1915, is a scathing condemnation of Freud's theories on sexuality including the Oedipus-complex. This was incredibly embarrassing to Freud for his pupil to so forcefully disagree with him on an international platform, a threat which Freud never had in his academic career. Freud's hegemony in the field of psychology was challenged by this lecture. Jung started to explore the idea of the collective unconscious in this publication – a shared reservoir of experiences and symbols that have universal meanings across cultures. Building on his earlier works like the "Diagnostische Assoziationsstudien," Jung delved deeper into the nature of complexes, describing them as emotionally charged groups of ideas or images. This edition is a new 2023 edition with an Afterword by the Translator, a philosophic index of Jung's terminology and a timeline of his life and works. This manuscript has been updated into modern English spelling.

Book excerpt: Figures of the Unconscious, No. 8Sigmund Freud, in his search for the origins of the sense of guilt in individual life and culture, regularly speaks of "reading a dark trace," thus referring to the Oedipus myth as a myth about the problem of human guilt. In Freud's view, this sense of guilt is a trace, a path, that leads deep into the individual's mental state, into childhood memories, and into the prehistory of culture and religion. Herman Westerink follows this trace and analyzes Freud's thought on the sense of guilt as a central issue in his work, from the earliest studies on the moral and "guilty" characters of the hysterics, via later complex differentiations within the concept of the sense of guilt, and finally to Freud's conception of civilization's discontents and Jewish sense of guilt. The sense of guilt is a key issue in Freudian psychoanalysis, not only in relation to other key concepts in psychoanalytic theory but also in relation to Freud's debates with other psychoanalysts, including Carl Jung and Melanie Klein.

Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book was seeded by the first-ever joint Jung–Lacan conference on the notion of the sublime held at Cambridge, England, against the backdrop of the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the Great War. It provides a fascinating range of in-depth psychological perspectives on aspects of creativity and destruction inherent in the monstrous, awe-inspiring sublime. The chapters include some of the outcrop of academic and clinical papers given at this conference, with the addition of new contributions that explore similarities and differences between Jungian and Lacanian thinking on key topics such as language and linguistics, literature, religion, self and subject, science, mathematics and philosophy. The overall objective of this vitalizing volume is the development and dissemination of new ideas that will be of interest to practising psychoanalysts, psychotherapists and academics in the field, as well as to all those who are captivated by the still-revolutionary thinking of Jung and Lacan.

Book excerpt: Since the split between Freud and Jung, psychoanalysis and analytical psychology have largely developed in an atmosphere of mutual disregard. Only in recent years have both discourses shown signs of an increasing willingness to engage. Re-Encountering Jung: Analytical Psychology and Contemporary Psychoanalysis is the first edited volume devoted to a reconciliation between these two fields. The contributors explore how Jungian thinking influences, challenges, and is challenged by recent developments in the psychoanalytic mainstream. In examining the nature of the split, figures from both sides of the conversation seek to establish lines of contrast and commonality so as to reflect an underlying belief in the value of reciprocal engagement. Each of the chapters in this collection engages the relationship between Jungian and psychoanalytic thinking with the intention of showing how both lines of discourse might have something to gain from attending more to the voice of the other. While several of the contributing authors offer new perceptions on historical concerns, the main thrust of the collection is in exploring contemporary debates. Re-Encountering Jung reflects a unique undertaking to address one of the longest-standing and most significant rifts in the history of depth psychology. It will be of great interest to all academics, students and clinicians working within the fields of psychoanalysis and analytical psychology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One evening years after the rupture between Freud and Jung, the Swiss psychiatrist C. A. Meier spent an hour alone with Freud in his study at Berggasse 19. "There was one topic of conversation," Meier remembered. "Jung. Freud was full of questions about Jung, about his family, his life and what he was doing. Every conceivable question," Meier said. "Because he still cared." Meier would find the same anguish in Jung. "He didn't like to talk about Freud because it was so painful." Another Swiss analyst agreed. "The wound was always there, it never healed. It was a tragedy." The hours that Freud and Jung had spent in Freud's dim and quiet study lay in the past. The long ordeal of Freud and Jung was reminder and more that some piece of the human psyche was beyond comprehension. The moment when the world's first analysts, unable to alleviate their pain, played with stones at the edge of a dry lakeshore or stood for hours before the statue of an angry prophet, bore witness to the intransigent mystery of the human spirit. That mystery was the terrible beauty of the psyche, and they lived it, Freud and Jung, alone." - from Freud and Jung Previously published by Charles Scribner's Sons.
