Book Synopsis Prophetic Encounters by : Dan McKanan
Download or read book Prophetic Encounters written by Dan McKanan and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A broad, definitive history of the profound relationship between religion and movements for social change in America Though in recent years the religious right has been a powerful political force, making “religion” and “conservatism” synonymous in the minds of many, the United States has always had an active, vibrant, and influential religious Left. In every period of our history, people of faith have envisioned a society of peace and justice, and their tireless efforts have made an indelible mark on our nation’s history. In Prophetic Encounters, Dan McKanan challenges simple distinctions between “religious” and “secular” activism, showing that religious beliefs and practices have been integral to every movement promoting liberty, equality, and solidarity. From Frederick Douglass, John Brown, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton in the nineteenth century to Dorothy Day, Martin Luther King Jr., and Starhawk in the twentieth, American radicals have maintained a deep faith in the human capacity to transform the world. This radical faith has always been intertwined with the religious practices of Christians and Jews, pagans and Buddhists, orthodox believers and humanist heretics. Their vision and energies powered the social movements that have defined America’s progress: the abolition of slavery, feminism, the New Deal, civil rights, and others. In this groundbreaking, definitive work, McKanan treats the histories of religion and the Left as a single history, showing that American radicalism is a continuous tradition rather than a collection of disparate movements. Emphasizing the power of encounter—encounters between whites and former slaves, between the middle classes and the immigrant masses, and among activists themselves—McKanan shows that the coming together of people of different perspectives and beliefs has been transformative for centuries, uniting those whose faith is a source of activist commitment with those whose activism is a source of faith. Offering a history of the diverse religious dimensions of radical movements from the American Revolution to the present day, Prophetic Encounters invites contemporary activists to stand proudly in a tradition of prophetic power.

Book Synopsis Divine Initiative and the Christology of the Damascus Road Encounter by : Timothy W. R. Churchill
Download or read book Divine Initiative and the Christology of the Damascus Road Encounter written by Timothy W. R. Churchill and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-04-28 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Damascus road encounter between Jesus and Paul is foundational to understanding the early development of Christology, and, indeed, Christianity, since it is the first appearance of the post-ascension Jesus contained in the earliest Christian literature. This study examines the encounter as it is described in Paul's epistles and the book of Acts. Since Paul interprets his experience within the Jewish tradition, this study begins with a survey of epiphany texts in the Old Testament and other ancient Jewish literature. This reveals two new categories for appearances of God, angels, and other heavenly beings: Divine Initiative and Divine Response. This survey also finds two distinct patterns of characterization for God and other heavenly beings. These findings are then applied to Paul's accounts of his Damascus road encounter. Paul depicts the encounter as a Divine Initiative epiphany. This conclusion is significant, since it argues against the current view that the encounter was a merkabah vision. Paul's Christology in the Damascus road encounter is also significant, since Jesus is characterized as divine. Such divine characterization is not typical for heavenly beings in first-century CE epiphany texts. Thus, a high Pauline Christology appears to be present at a very early point. The three accounts of the Damascus road encounter in Acts also fit the pattern of Divine Initiative--not merkabah--and exhibit the high Christology of Paul's accounts. In fact, the three accounts in Acts are shown to form an intentionally increasing sequence culminating in the revelation that Paul was called to be an apostle by Jesus himself on the Damascus road.

Book Synopsis What Our Ministry Is by : Theodore Andoseh
Download or read book What Our Ministry Is written by Theodore Andoseh and published by ZTF Books Online. This book was released on 2016-10-21 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are the general purposes of God and the distinct purposes of God that He entrusts to specific individuals, groups of individuals, communities, and even to a Spiritual Movement. Both kinds of callings are documented in the Scriptures and all serve the economy of God’s purposes. To Zach Fomum and those that God called along with him, a distinct economy of the Gospel was entrusted that translated into a clear goal. The pursuance of that goal through obedience to God’s specific instructions has gradually clarified the will of God and the means of accomplishing His purposes. God’s will, God’s ways, our responsibility, who we must be, what we must do to please God, and accomplish our goal, are presented here as constituting our ministry. This is written for all who are part of our ministry, and for all who will be part of this ministry, so that we may serve in the same spirit for the same purpose and, by accomplishing the goal, bring glory to our Lord Jesus. God bless you.

Book Synopsis A Portrait of Intercession by : Mark D. Spencer
Download or read book A Portrait of Intercession written by Mark D. Spencer and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2010-02-08 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Portrait of Intercession is a collection of articles, often prophetic in nature dealing with various aspects of intercession. Each chapter will at once challenge the believer to go not only the first mile with Jesus, but willingly and joyfully press on in true and vital fashion, overcoming faith to go the second mile with Him in prayer and intercession. A Portrait of Intercession is a series of challenges, calling the believer to stretch out in believing and bold faith. It is a call to a more intense and intimate relationship with Jesus; to see His vision for the nations and to hear His heart for the peoples of the world. Intercession is, of necessity, a hidden ministry. Its labors may be seen only by a few but it is recognized and welcomed at the Throne of Grace. It is possibly the most noble of ministries and surely the most noble of the various forms of prayer. Intercession willingly joins us with Jesus in His never-ending, ever-watchful prayer for His people. It is a selfless praying which readily enters into Christs sufferings; that is, our joining with Him in His divine laboring at the expense of our own wants and desires.
