Book excerpt: Electronic scanning is the most desirable feature of state-of-the-art radar systems. With electronic scanning, it is possible to steer the main beam of an array antenna instantaneously into a desired direction where no mechanical mechanism is involved in the scanning process. Electronic scanning methods including phase scanning, time delay scanning, and frequency scanning have been used in various radar applications; however new and cheaper scanning methods are still being investigated. It is the purpose of this thesis to investigate an array configuration called frequency diverse array (FDA), which gives rise to range-, time-, and angle-dependent scanning without using phase shifters. In this thesis, first, frequency diverse array as a time-modulated array is presented. A general analysis and the theory of time domain scanning is given. Equations derived for a time-modulated frequency diverse array are simulated using MATLAB. Amplitude tapering and Fourier series expansion is implemented in MATLAB and the results are provided for comparison. Secondly, analysis of a frequency diverse array is presented. Time-, range-, and angle-dependent electronic scanning is achieved by applying a small amount of frequency shift among the antenna elements. The simulation results for radiation patterns with various excitation types are given. Lastly, the radar applications of FDA are considered. The received power from a target at a fixed range is simulated in MATLAB and the results are presented.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents a novel concept for focusing an antenna beam pattern as a function of range, time, and angle. In conventional phased arrays, beam steering is achieved by applying a linear phase progression across the aperture. This thesis shows that by applying an additional linear frequency shift across the elements, a new term is generated which results in a scan angle that varies with range in the far-field. Moreover, the antenna pattern is shown to scan in range and angle as a function of time. These properties result in more flexible beam scan options for phased array antennas than traditional phase shifter implementations. The thesis subsequently goes on to investigate this phenomenon via full scale experimentation, and explores a number of aspects of applying frequency diversity spatially across array antennas. This new form of frequency diverse array may have applications to multipath mitigation, where a radio signal takes two or more routes between the transmitter and receiver due to scattering from natural and man-made objects. Since the interfering signals arrive from more than one direction, the range-dependent and auto-scanning properties of the frequency diverse array beam may be useful to isolate and suppress the interference. The frequency diverse array may also have applications to wideband array steering, in lieu of true time delay solutions which are often used to compensate for linear phase progression with frequency across an array, and to sonar, where the speed of propagation results in large percentage bandwidth, creating similar wideband array effects. The frequency diverse array is also a stepping stone to more sophisticated joint antenna and waveform design for the creation of new radar modes, such as simultaneous multi-mode operation, for example, enabling joint synthetic aperture radar and ground moving target indication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Typical radar systems are limited to energy distribution characteristics that are range independent. However, operators are generally interested in obtaining information at particular ranges and discarding elsewhere. It seems appropriate then to attempt to put energy solely at the range(s) of interest, thus minimizing exposure to clutter, jammers and other range-dependent interferences sources. The frequency diverse array (FDA) can provide a mechanism to achieve range-dependent beamforming and the spatial energy distribution properties are investigated on transmit and receive for different architectures herein. While simplified FDA receive architectures have been explored, they exclude the return signals from transmitters that are not frequency matched. This practice neglects practical consideration in receiver implementation and has motivated research to formulate a design that includes all frequencies. We present several receiver architectures for a uniform linear FDA, and compare the processing chain and spatial patterns in order to formulate an argument for the most efficient design to maximize gain on target. It may also be desirable to beamsteer in higher dimensionalities than a linear array affords, thus, the transmit and receive concept is extended to a generic planar array. This new architecture allows 3-D beamsteering in angle and range while maintaining practicality. The spatial patterns that arise are extremely unique and afford the radar designer an additional degree of freedom to develop operational strategy. The ability to simultaneously acquire, track, image and protect assets is a requirement of future fielded systems. The FDA architecture intrinsically covers multiple diversity domains and, therefore, naturally lends it self to a multi-mission, multi-mode adar scheme. A multiple beam technique that uses coding is suggested to advance this notion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is a well-known remote sensing technique, but conventional single-antenna SAR is inherently limited by the minimum antenna area constraint. Although there are still technical issues to overcome, multi-antenna SAR offers many benefits, from improved system gain to increased degrees-of-freedom and system flexibility. Multi-Antenna Synthetic Aperture Radar explores the potential and challenges of using multi-antenna SAR in microwave remote sensing applications. These applications include high-resolution imaging, wide-swath remote sensing, ground moving target indication, and 3-D imaging. The book pays particular attention to the signal processing aspects of various multi-antenna SAR from a top-level system perspective. Explore Recent Extensions of Synthetic Aperture Radar Systems The backbone of the book is a series of innovative microwave remote sensing approaches developed by the author. Centered around multi-antenna SAR imaging, these approaches address specific challenges and potential problems in future microwave remote sensing. Chapters examine single-input multiple-output (SIMO) multi-antenna SAR, including azimuth and elevation multi-antenna SAR, and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) SAR. The book details the corresponding system scheme, signal models, time/phase/spatial synchronization methods, and high-precision imaging algorithms. It also investigates their potential applications. Introductory Tutorials and Novel Approaches in Multi-Antenna SAR Imaging Rigorous and self-contained, this is a unique reference for researchers and industry professionals working with microwave remote sensing, SAR imaging, and radar signal processing. In addition to novel approaches, the book also presents tutorials that serve as an introduction to multi-antenna SAR imaging for those who are new to the field.

Book excerpt: The Frequency Diverse Array (FDA) antenna provides range - angle - time dependentbeampattern, potentially generating highly directional beams with high gain that may besteered directly and continuously to the desired position. This research explores using FDAantenna for tracking a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite. Although FDA array antenna hasbeen growing in use for radar communication systems with advantages of it is electronicallybeam steering, it is still not truly used in integrate with LEO systems. The mathematicalmodel of FDA antennas with dierent geometries for tracking LEO satellite is presented. Then, the radiation characteristics of linear and Planar-FDA under dierent situations areinvestigated. Further, the planar FDA array owns greater superiority over the linear FDAarray, and it can cover the observation space indicating great potential in LEO trackingand communication applications. A ground receiving antenna system based on planar FDAarray antenna is presented for tracking and communicating with (LEO) satellite at groundstation. This is required to minimize a complexity and the cost of ground station. Tomeet the system gure of merit (G/T) requirement, the radiation characteristics, the gainrequirements, the array size, the minimum number of elements and their distribution forseveral FDA array antenna architectures are calculated and analyzed. Moreover, a generaloverview of system temperature is presented including a noise model for FDA array antenna, and the link budget analysis and evaluation are introduced.
