Book Synopsis The Human Imperative by : Paul Nemitz
Download or read book The Human Imperative written by Paul Nemitz and published by Ethics International Press. This book was released on 2023-07-31 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important new book is about power in the age of Artificial Intelligence. It looks at what the new technical powers that have accrued over the last decades mean for the freedom of people and for our democracies. AI must not be considered in isolation, but rather in a very specific context; the concentration of economic and digital-technological power that we see today. Analysis of the effects of AI requires that we take a holistic view of the business models of digital technologies, and of the power they exercise. Technology, economic power, and political power are entering into ever closer symbiosis. Digital technologies and their corporate masters now know more than people know about themselves, or governments know about the world. These technologies accumulate more and more decision-making powers. Taken together this leads to a massive asymmetry of knowledge and power in the relationship between man and machine. The classical models of action and decision-making in democratic societies are being gradually undermined by such developments. In a new way, the question of the control of technical power arises. This is the first book to look in detail in a holistic way at the challenges of digital power and Artificial Intelligence to Democracy and Liberties, and to set out what can and needs to be done about these challenges in terms of engineering ethics, and democratic action of policy making and legislation. Key audiences are scholars in media sciences, political sciences, computer sciences and engineering, law and philosophy as well as policy makers, corporate and civil society leaders and the educated public. Adapted and updated from the original German language book “Prinzip Mensch – Macht, Freiheit und Demokratie im Zeitalter der Künstlichen Intelligenz“, published 2020 by Verlag J.H.W. Dietz Nachf. GmbH.

Book Synopsis Religion in the Secular Age by : Herta Nagl-Docekal
Download or read book Religion in the Secular Age written by Herta Nagl-Docekal and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-09-05 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to be religious believers for people whose living conditions are defined by an increasingly secularized environment? Is the common distinction between faith and knowledge valid? The 21 essays cover approaches from various fields of the humanities. Some explore post-Kantian thoughts, discussing, i.a., American Pragmatism, M. Buber, M. Horkheimer, H. Putnam, J. Habermas, Ch. Taylor and variants of deconstruction, while other essays focus on ways in which the conflict between agnostics and seekers is addressed in US literary works, as in Fl. O’Connor, W. Percy, N. Hawthorne, J. Updike and in novels dealing with pandemics, for instance by L. Wright, E. M. Wiseman and R. Cook. Historical studies examine the intermingling of the sacred and the secular in the American South and neo-scholastic objections to modernity. Theological issues are being re-framed in essays discussing the relevance of pluralism, the relation of religious conviction and public opinion, the situation of scientists who believe and the thoughts of N. Frye and M. McLuhan. Finally, essays pay attention to religious aspects in works of art, e.g. in Ukrainian poetry, G. Mahler’s symphonies and in a TV show presenting new “American Gods” of globalization.
Book Synopsis Freedom, Imprisonment, and Slavery in the Pre-Modern World by : Albrecht Classen
Download or read book Freedom, Imprisonment, and Slavery in the Pre-Modern World written by Albrecht Classen and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-04-19 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrary to common assumptions, medieval and early modern writers and poets often addressed the high value of freedom, whether we think of such fable authors as Marie de France or Ulrich Bonerius. Similarly, medieval history knows of numerous struggles by various peoples to maintain their own freedom or political independence. Nevertheless, as this study illustrates, throughout the pre-modern period, the loss of freedom could happen quite easily, affecting high and low (including kings and princes) and there are many literary texts and historical documents that address the problems of imprisonment and even enslavement (Georgius of Hungary, Johann Schiltberger, Hans Ulrich Krafft, etc.). Simultaneously, philosophers and theologians discussed intensively the fundamental question regarding free will (e.g., Augustine) and political freedom (e.g., John of Salisbury). Moreover, quite a large number of major pre-modern poets spent a long time in prison where they composed some of their major works (Boethius, Marco Polo, Charles d'Orléans, Thomas Malory, etc.). This book brings to light a vast range of relevant sources that confirm the existence of this fundamental and impactful discourse on freedom, imprisonment, and enslavement.
Book Synopsis Sociology in the Twenty-First Century by : Simon Susen
Download or read book Sociology in the Twenty-First Century written by Simon Susen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-17 with total page 623 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines key trends, debates, and challenges in twenty-first-century sociology. To this end, it focuses on significant issues surrounding the nature of sociology (‘What is sociology?’), the history of sociology (‘How has sociology evolved?’), and the study of sociology (‘How can or should we make sense of sociology?’). These issues have been, and will continue to be, essential to the creation of conceptually informed, methodologically rigorous, and empirically substantiated research programmes in the discipline. Over the past years, however, there have been numerous disputes and controversies concerning the future of sociology. Particularly important in this respect are recent and ongoing discussions on the possibilities of developing new – and, arguably, post-classical – forms of sociology. The central assumption underlying most of these projects is the contention that a comprehensive analysis of the principal challenges faced by global society requires the construction of a sociology capable of accounting for the interconnectedness of social actors and social structures across time and space. This book provides a cutting-edge overview of crucial past, present, and possible future trends, debates, and challenges shaping the pursuit of sociological inquiry. ‘Simon Susen – one of the most knowledgeable scholars in the contemporary social sciences – examines the key challenges with which sociology is confronted today. This book is a must-read for professional sociologists as well as for those studying the subject.’ – Luc Boltanski, École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris, France ‘Simon Susen provides a balanced update on sociology’s theoretical, methodological, and institutional resources as well as challenges in today’s complicated local and global social worlds. Fortunately, he has innovative and practical recommendations for ensuring the cutting-edge relevance of sociological thinking. This book is an excellent choice for undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as for the general reader.’ – Sandra Harding, University of California, Los Angeles, USA ‘A comprehensive and judicious account of the intellectual and material state of sociology, based on omnivorous reading and incisive analysis. The writing is beautifully clear, and the book is a major contribution to the self-understanding of the discipline.’ – William Outhwaite, Newcastle University, UK

Book Synopsis Der Karikaturenstreit und die Pressefreiheit. Wert- und Normenkonflikte in der globalen Medienkultur by : Bernhard Debatin
Download or read book Der Karikaturenstreit und die Pressefreiheit. Wert- und Normenkonflikte in der globalen Medienkultur written by Bernhard Debatin and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2007 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. To some, the infamous "Mohammed Cartoons" that were published in September 2005 by the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten tested the limits of the freedom of the press. Others regarded them as a malicious and tasteless provocation. And for yet others, they were a welcome excuse for violent protests. The cartoon debate raises a number of questions: What is paramount here, defense of the freedom of the press or mere Islamophobia? Is Western tolerance pitted against Oriental narrow-mindedness, or is this rather an issue of mutual respect and restraint? Was the whole conflict artificially created and inflamed by the media? Do we need to develop a new media ethics of intercultural recognition in the global media culture? And how can we ensure that this respect is mutual and not just laissezfaire tolerance of intolerance?

Book Synopsis In Freiheit glauben by : Saskia Wendel
Download or read book In Freiheit glauben written by Saskia Wendel and published by Verlag Friedrich Pustet. This book was released on 2020-03-16 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
