Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Society has long been fascinated with the freakish, shocking and strange. In this book Gary Cross shows how freakish elements have been embedded in modern popular culture over the course of the 20th century despite the evident disenchantment with this once widespread cultural outlet. Exploring how the spectacle of freakishness conflicted with genteel culture, he shows how the condemnation of the freak show by middle-class America led to a transformation and merging of genteel and freak culture through the cute, the camp and the creepy. Though the carnival and circus freak was marginalised by the 1960s and had largely disappeared by the 1980s, forms of freakish culture survived and today appear in reality TV, horror movies, dark comedies and the popularity of tattoos. Freak Show Legacies will focus less on the individual 'freak' as 'the other' in society, and more on the audience for the freakish and the transformation of wonder, sensibility and sensitivity that this phenomenon entailed. It will use the phenomenon of 'the freak' to understand the transformation of American popular culture across the 20th century, identify elements of 'the freak' in popular culture both past and present, and ask how it has prevailed despite its apparent unpopularity.

Book excerpt: There exist problematic attitudes and beliefs about dwarfism that have rarely been challenged, but continue to construct people with dwarfism as an inferior group within society. This book introduces the critical term ‘midgetism’, which the author has coined, to demonstrate that the socio-cultural discrimination people with dwarfism experience is influenced by both heightism and disablism. As a result, it unpacks and challenges the problematic social assumptions that reinforce midgetism within society, including the acceptability of ‘midget entertainment’ and ‘non-normate space’, to demonstrate how particular spaces can either aid in reinforcing or challenge midgetism. Drawing on the tripartite model of disability, this book demonstrates how midget entertainment is framed as a non-normative positivism, which makes it an acceptable form of employment. Using autocritical discourse analysis, the book exposes, examines and responds to excuses that are used to reinforce midgetism, thus critiquing the numerous beliefs influenced by cultural representations of dwarfism, such as people with dwarfism being acceptable figures of entertainment. It will be of interest to all scholars and students of disability studies, social history, sociology and cultural geography.

Book excerpt: The Legacy of The X-Files examines the content and production of the show, its reception, its use of legend and folklore, its contemporary resonance in politics and society of the 21st century, and its impact and legacy on film, television, the Internet and beyond. Having converged with the early widespread use of the Internet, The X-Files became a cultural touchstone of the 1990s, transforming from a cult TV show into a pop cultural phenomenon by the end of the decade. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of The X-Files, this collection examines the content and production of the show, its reception, its use of legend and folklore, its contemporary resonance in politics and society of the 21st century, and its impact and legacy on film, television, the Internet and beyond. The series' themes of government mistrust, conspiracy, folklore, UFOlogy, and faith are dissected and applied to how the show spirituality resonated with post-Cold War Western society. Contributors to this collection discuss the wide-ranging impact of the television show in popular culture, from Mulder and Scully 'shippers' to the show's slogan entering the contemporary lexicon. The Legacy of The X-Files serves as an all-encompassing, multi-disciplinary, contemporary account of The X-Files, reflecting upon critical, historical, political, and social contexts, and featuring an in-depth and comprehensive introduction making it a vital work for researchers and students alike.

Book excerpt: The Waste Land chronicles the adventures of Hugh de Verdon, a monk turned knight, during the extraordinary historical events of the First Crusade. When Hugh's father and brothers perish in a hunt run amok, his mother enters him into the great Benedictine monastery of Cluny. Hugh had dreamed of becoming a hunter and knight like his father, but despite his original reluctance, he works diligently, learning Latin, Greek and Scripture. He quickly gains the respect of the monks and abbot, who begin to entrust him with increasingly important duties. However, he has a serious fall from grace within the monastery when he is caught secretly reading the works of Ovid, as the monks (aptly) fear that the material will exacerbate his spiritual doubts. When he accompanies the abbot on a trip to meet with Pope Urban II, Hugh encounters a long-lost cousin, Lord Godfrey who is off to lead troops into the First Crusade. Hugh persuades the abbot and Godfrey to allow him to serve as Godfrey's secretary and translator, and the dramas of Hugh's life escalate from spiritual to worldly and violent. In his travels to battles in Antioch, Constantinople and Jerusalem, the warrior blood in Hugh's veins awakens. He learns to wield a sword against foes ranging from Muslim soldiers to boars. He also becomes invaluable to Godfrey, due to the watchfulness and cunning he displays in subtle defense against plots from other factions of the soldiers. However, he must struggle with the contradictions between his faith and his actions, as well as reconcile the religious motives he wishes to attribute to the Pope with the material concerns of the Christian knights. Eventually, Hugh find himself in numerous hostile situations that he must think his way out of -- and ends up imprisoned by Turks, and unwillingly involved in an urgent search for the Holy Grail. Will he find it in time to rescue his love? And if he does, what will the discovery mean for his faith, the Crusades, and all of Christendom? Hugh de Verdon's tale is retold by a group of desperate Oxford professors, reworking his autobiographical manuscript into a bestseller in hopes of making enough money to save the university. But tensions run high when it comes to the different professors- investments in the manuscript, and the situation escalates dangerously to a matter of life and death. Snarky, tongue-in-cheek and thrilling, their narrative also provides a commentary on the 11th century events and shows that they are perhaps not all they seem.
