Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the World's Fair: Being a Complete Description of the World's Columbian Exposition From Its Inception You want me to express my opinion in regard to the Fair. I cannot talk to you about it from an artistic standpoint, for I know very little about art. I can only tell its effect upon me and, inferentially, what it will be upon 10,000,000 of people. I think it will astound every one who visits it, both on account of its magnitude and what they will consider its artistic merits. It would be fairy-like if it were not so colossal. It is a vision snatched from dreams whose lines have been brought out and well defined by the iodine of art. As an educational force and inspiration I believe the buildings, their grouping, and laying out of the grounds will in themselves do more good in a general way than the exhibits themselves, by the exaltation that it will inspire in every man, woman, and child who may have any emotions, and who has none, that may come to view it. I think that the prospect from Lake Michigan will impress every one who approaches it from that side by the tout ensemble which will be presented. I never looked at it without thinking of Claude Melnotte's description to Pauline of his palace by the Lake of Como. I was at Nice some years ago, and one morning in November I looked from my balcony up the distant mountain side and saw the cataract going over the dam, the Alps in the background, with the olive groves and the blue Mediterranean far above ground, and I said to my wife: "Every one who can should come to Nice to put in a stock of material for dreams." I think the Exposition furnishes a magazine for dreams equally as grand and more attractive. I have no doubt that, notwithstanding the vast amount of literature and illustrations which has been issued describing the Fair, the expectations of our people and those from abroad will be more than realized. I never go down to it but what I am lifted up to a higher plane, and feel more enthusiasm in regard to its real magnitude and merit. If it was within the range of constitutional legislation it would pay the Government of the United States to bring free of expense ten millions of our people who will not have the money to come. Not illustrated. 1868 edition. Excerpt: ... To His Excellency Hon. Alexander H. Bullock. Having been appointed by your Excellency to represent the State of Massachusetts in the Paris Exposition, and having accepted and discharged, to the best of my ability, the responsibilities of the situation, I respectfully submit the following report: Notice of my appointment was received August 23, 1866, and I immediately entered upon the discharge of my duties by co-operating with the Commissioner-General and other agents of the United States, in presenting to the citizens of Massachusetts the information necessary to secure a creditable and successful exhibition for our Commonwealth in the World's Fair. I caused to be published in the prominent newspapers of the State important information relating to the Exposition, and I sent forth circulars specifying the kinds of goods most requisite for the occasion, the time when they must be ready for shipment, the expense that would probably occur to the contributors, and such other facts as might induce our citizens to forward articles for their own credit and emolument, for the honor of the State, and for the honor and dignity of our beloved country. The Exposition was opened to the public, April 1, 1867. It was a beautiful day, and Paris was alive with excitement. The police were out in full force, and in attractive uniforms, and the military display was grand. Flags were waving all over the city, and the decorations of the Grand Entrance, and of the main avenue to the Palace, were varied and brilliant; and over the Palace were flung to the breeze the banners of all nations. The number of persons present was almost inestimable, yet all were orderly, and to appearance happy, and when the Emperor and Empress and the Prince Imperial appeared, the...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1876 United States Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia was not only the United States' first important world's fair, it signaled significant changes in the very shape of knowledge. Quarrels between participants in the exhibition represented a greater conflict as the world transitioned between two different kinds of modernity—the Enlightenment of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to the High Modern period of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. At the center of this movement was a shift in the perceived relationship between seeing and knowing and in the perception of what makes an object valuable—its usefulness as a subject of study and learning versus its ability to be bought and sold on the market. Arguments over design of the Centennial reflected these opposing viewpoints. Initial plans were rigidly structured, dividing the exhibits by country and type. But as some exhibitors became more interested in the preferences of their audience, they adopted a more modern stance. Objects traditionally displayed in isolated glass boxes were placed in fictive context—the necklace draped over a mannequin, the vase set on a table in a model room. As a result, the audience could more easily perceive these items as commodities suitable for their own environments and the fair as a place to find ideas for a material lifestyle. Designing the Centennial is a vital first look at the design process and the nature of the display. Bruno Giberti uses official reports of the U.S. Centennial Commission and photographs of the Centennial Photographic Company, as well as the ephemera of the exhibition and literary accounts in books, magazines, and newspapers to illuminate how the 1876 fair revealed changes to come: in future world's fairs, museums, department stores, and in the nature of display itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global biennials have proliferated in the contemporary art world, but artists’ engagement with large-scale international exhibitions has a much longer history that has influenced the present in important ways. Going back to the earliest world’s fairs in the nineteenth century, this book argues that “globalism” was incubated in a century of international art contests and today constitutes an important tactic for artists. As world’s fairs brought millions of attendees into contact with foreign cultures, products, and processes, artworks became juxtaposed in a “theater of nations,” which challenged artists and critics to think outside their local academies. From Gustave Courbet’s rebel pavilion near the official art exhibit at the 1855 French World’s Fair to curator Beryl Madra’s choice of London-based Cypriot Hussein Chalayan for the off-site Turkish pavilion at the 2006 Venice Biennale, artists have used these exhibitions to reflect on contemporary art, speak to their own governments back home, and challenge the wider geopolitical realm—changing art and art history along the way. Ultimately, Caroline A. Jones argues, the modern appetite for experience and event structures, which were cultivated around the art at these earlier expositions, have now come to constitute contemporary art itself, producing encounters that transform the public and force us to reflect critically on the global condition.

Book excerpt: "Following the enormous success of the Great Exhibition of 1851, expositions have been held in Europe, America and Asia and provided a stage on which the world has come together to display its achievement and ambitions. These momentous events have also exerted a profound influence on developments in architecture and urban planning, transportation, mass communication, consumerism, science, technology, art, industrial design, popular culture, entertainment and leisure. The revolver, sewing machine, telephone and television have all had their public launch at, expositions, the Eiffel Tower in Paris and Atomium in Brussels were purpose-built for expositions, and one of the greatest paintings of the twentieth century, Pablo Picasso's Guernica, was created specifically for display at the 1937 Paris exposition." "This book accompanies a touring exhibition originated by the Bureau International des Expositions and is written around three broad themes: the city transformed, the world displayed and the future represented. It bridges the gap between a general overview and academic text, providing a lively introduction to the history and significance of international expositions. The experience of visiting an 'expo' was essentially a visual one and the objects featured here are primarily graphic: posters, ephemera, photographs, books and catalogues, all of which help trace the development of these events and the changing ways in which they were recorded as technology advanced, from hand-tinted print to aerial colour photograph."--BOOK JACKET.
