His life as an individual and artist is marked by a reticence, an aversion to the unveiling of the inner SOul,1 that is perhaps best matched by the concise style and expression of his works. This art of effective restraint is particularly visible in the dramas where often a single word or indeed an utter silence carries the greatest emotional impact. There is an absolute lack of sound and fury signifying nothing; even in the frenzy of inspiration 2 Grillparzer carefully chooses words that best convey his thoughts and for purely emotional release he turns to another medium which he sharply distinguished from poetry: to music. If this poet then who knows no empty phrases applies terms like 'betrothed of the gods',3 'mother of all greatness',4 'mighty 5 lever of the universe', 'messenger of divine happiness'6 to one and the same concept at different times, we may assume that he here expresses something deeply anchored in his being. And indeed, the motif of concentration ('Sammlung') and inspiration ('Begeisterung') is one that we meet again and again in the poetry, the diaries and the dramas. This emotional state is at all times highly revered and greatly sought by the poet - it is, in fact, made a condition of creative productivity and, as the years pass, finally develops into a condition of life itself in the prophecy of 'Libussa'.

Book excerpt: "Gender and Identity in Franz Grillparzer's Classical Plays explores language as a cultural document for an intervention into the ways that female alterity is framed in the ancient world. Grillparzer creates a new way of being that is primarily discursive in which the once unintelligible female figure may be known and heard"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Poor Musician" is an autobiographical novella by Austria's famous dramatist and poet Franz Grillparzer (1791-1872): Rounded and compacted, and yet saturated with the sad tragedy of his own isolation -- it is the most artistic work we have from his pen. For the student of Grillparzer-psychology it is a veritable treasure trove. "The Poor Musician" was the one piece of his creative genius that unflinchingly grappled with the great problem of resignation; the one piece that pictured resignation; but also the one piece that made resignation itself tragic. --- The poor, half-witted fiddler, shipwrecked in life, coddling his woe as the last sweet treasure it has left him, pouring it forth in the midnight solitude of his chamber in music that is music to none but the illusioned player -- such is resignation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reeve not only offers a close textual analysis of the drama from the aspect of separation but shows how Libussa and its author fit into the development of the history of ideas in nineteenth-century Europe. He contends that Grillparzer's work reflects Bachofen, Neumann, Nietzsche, Freud, and Lacan. Using Freudian psychoanalysis, Neumann's investigation of the female archetype, and anthropological studies, Reeve argues that Grillparzer's tragedy portrays the struggle between matriarchy and patriarchy, nurturers and warriors, and rural and urban cultures. Since Libussa proves unable to overcome the gender bias of here male subjects, the play concludes with a symbolic statement of masculine superiority as man and woman remain intellectually and physically apart. Reeve's analysis draws parallels with Grillparzer's other two completed posthumous tragedies, Ein Bruderzwist in Habsburg and Die Jüdin von Toledo, relating his findings to the greater context of nineteenth-century German drama.

This book was released on 1991 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work provides a general survey with the main emphasis on the thematic and dramatic content of the plays (genesis and background, structure, characters, major themes), as well as questions of language, style and imagery, especially where these contribute to the play's theatrical effectiveness. This work's most important contribution to scholarship is the investigation of Grillparzer's interest in the Classical generation of writers, reflected in almost all his works, either in the form of a debt to a particular work or in the echoing of key philosophical themes of the period. Grillparzer's mature works reveal an interest in high ideals on the one hand and a recognition of the demands of everyday reality on the other, while the formal precision of Classical drama is enriched by a theatrical immediacy in keeping with Viennese traditions. This combination reflects the conflicts in Grillparzer's own personality and results in a considerable degree of ambiguity in the presentation of characters and themes, but it is precisely such a rejection of easy solutions in his works that ensures their relevance for a modern audience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Der Traum, Ein Leben: Dramatisches Märchen in Vier Aufzügen When about sixteen at the Gymnasium he formed a firm friendship with a young literary aspirant, Mailler. In spired by mutual admiration they each wrote a play: Mail ler a Roman tragedy, Grillparzer a comedy satirizing his teachers, as Lessing and Goethe had done before him. He also wrote youthful verses which promised well. But at school it was said he had no ear for verse. Later he learned the secret of rhythm from music, as he told Beethoven. At seventeen he matriculated in the university as a stu dent of law and philosophy. Here again he did little studying and much reading. His professors were very pedantic: the contempt felt for them he unfortunately transferred also to their subjects - then to scholars and learning in general. This prejudice never left him. In his reading at that period he busied himself much with dramatic literature and wrote a parody on the Eneid, called significantly Main Traum. Carried away by the storm and stress of Schiller's early dramas, he wrote a palpable imitation of Don C arlos in his Blanka van Kastilien a long play which shows de cided dramatic talent; but while the exposition is excellent, the development of the plot is obscure and prolix.
