Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frankie Dettori is certainly one of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries’ truly great international jockeys. Italian by birth – he rode his first winner there – we have been lucky in England that he came to live in Newmarket aged fifteen and has ridden mainly here. A great and popular figure, quietly and privately he has done much for disabled people. In fact, he is a good example by any standards of a superb sportsman on and off the racecourse. Perhaps most famous for riding all seven winners at Ascot on 28 September 1996, his record in the English classics over 30 years gives a true indication of his ability and dedication. There is no doubt that England’s five classic races, the 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas which both run in late April/early May at Newmarket over a mile, the Oaks and Derby which run in early June at Epsom over a mile and a half, and the St Leger which runs nearly two miles in mid-September at Doncaster, are very, very important races on the international racing scene. Frankie Dettori's record in them is super – 23 wins. Since 1945, he and Lester Piggott are the only jockeys to ride at least two winners of each of the classics. To put Frankie’s record into perspective, Sir Gordon Richards, 26-time champion flat jockey between 1925 and 1953, rode only fourteen classic winners. This highly readable but erudite book devotes a double page spread to every winning ride, and there is a color section of photographs of him aboard his winning mounts by the famous racing journalist John Crofts. Dettori's first classic winner was in the 1994 Oaks at Epsom on Balanchine and his last in 2023, once again in the Oaks, on Soul Sister. This book is a superb record of greatness in the saddle over 30 years.

Book excerpt: After almost 30 years in racing, Frankie Dettori has seen it all. Arriving at Luton airport at the age of 14 with no English and a tag around his neck like Paddington Bear, Dettori soon found fame and success in and out of the saddle. Having become the first teenaged jockey since Lester Piggott to win more than 100 races in a season, he went on to ever greater success, reaching a peak when (uniquely in racing history) he won all seven races on the card at Ascot in September 1996. Famous for his flying dismounts after winning a race, he quickly became a housewife's and punter's favourite - the one modern jockey to transcend the sport. He has won all the big races, and has a knack of developing a superb relationship with his horses that ensures he gets the best out of them, often storming to the front in the final few strides. In this fascinating memoir, Dettori recalls the great races and horses, and reveals the truth about his work with the trainers and owners who have supported him. Dettori has always lived life to the full - now he is sharing his remarkable story with all those who have followed his career to date.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A quarter of a million people braved miserable conditions at Epsom Downs on June 2, 1954, to see the 175th running of the prestigious Derby Stakes. Queen Elizabeth II and Sir Winston Churchill were in attendance, along with thousands of Britons who were all convinced of the unfailing superiority of English bloodstock and eager to see a British colt take the victory. They were shocked when a Kentucky-born chestnut named Never Say Die galloped to a two-length triumph at odds of 33–1, winning Britain's greatest race and beginning an important shift in the world of Thoroughbred racing. Never Say Die traces the history of this extraordinary colt, beginning with his foaling in Lexington, Kentucky, as well as the stories of the influential individuals brought together by the horse and his victory—from the heir to the Singer sewing machine fortune to the Aga Khan. Most fascinating is the tale of Mona Best of Liverpool, England, whose well-placed bet on the long-shot Derby contender allowed her to open the Casbah Coffee Club. There, her son met musicians John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison, later joining their band. Featuring a foreword by the original drummer for the Beatles, Pete Best, this remarkable book reveals how an underdog's surprise victory played a part in the formation of the most successful and influential rock band in history and made the Bluegrass region of Kentucky the center of the international Thoroughbred industry.

Book excerpt: 'From incredible highs to devastating lows, the championship battles and mental turmoil, Derby winners and cancer heartbreak, Pat has left more than a legacy. Read this and you will agree with me – he is iconic.' RUBY WALSH 'Pat tells his story with the same honesty and humility that defined him as a person. He was a remarkable man and his is a compelling story.' SIR ANTHONY MCCOY 'Pat was an amazing man, a man of dignity who went about life with a smile on his face. He is an example to all of us.' FRANKIE DETTORI 'Inspiring, heart-breaking and unforgettable.' BROUGH SCOTT Pat Smullen was one of the greatest Irish jockeys ever. In a career laden with success, his position as one of the country's best ever flat jockeys was long established. And yet, despite being a nine-time champion jockey, his humility defined him. It was this strength of character that sustained him when, in March 2018, Pat was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. There was never any self-pity. He just dealt with it. And more than that, he brought it centre stage: raising funds and awareness, and channelling his energies into helping others. Pat was a champion in all aspects of life, no matter what setbacks were thrown at him. Tragically, his life was cut short far too early in September 2020. Written in the months before his death, with the assistance of Donn McClean and completed by Pat's wife, Frances Crowley, Champion is the inspirational story of the jockey whose legacy lives on.

Book excerpt: __________________ The bookies always win. But one man has been proving them wrong for four decades. In the summer of 1975 Barney Curley, a fearless and renowned gambler, masterminded one of the most spectacular gambles of all time with a racehorse called Yellow Sam. With a meticulous, entirely legal plan involving dozens of people, perfectly timed phone calls, sealed orders and months of preparation, Curley and Yellow Sam beat the bookmakers and cost them millions. They said that it could never happen again. But in May 2010, thirty-five years after his first coup, Curley staged the ultimate multi-million-pound-winning sequel. The Sure Thing tells the complete story of how he managed to organise the biggest gamble in racing history - and how he then followed up with yet another audacious scheme in January 2014.

Book excerpt: Published to accompany a major exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, Sporting Heroes charts the popular image of the British sporting hero in works of art dating from the 18th century to the present day. Contemporary heroes and heroines, including Frank Bruno and Lennox Lewis, are brought together with their earlier counterparts such as the 19th-century pugilist Tom Cribb; with - among many others - cricketers from W.G. Grace to Ian Botham; footballers from Sir Stanley Matthews to Bobby Charlton and Gary Lineker; and athletes from Roger Bannister to Linford Christie, Sally Gunnell and Fatima Whitbread. Illustrated throughout with paintings, drawings, sculpture, prints, photographs and multimedia works, the book also includes many images from private collections. It is both a celebration of the role of sport in popular culture and a fascinating history of how that role developed.

Book excerpt: SHORTLISTED FOR THE SUNDAY TIMES SPORTS BOOK AWARDS 2023 - SPORTS ENTERTAINMENT BOOK OF THE YEAR THE OFFICIAL DEFINITIVE HISTORY OF BBC SPORTS REPORT 'Opens the doors to one of the great radio institutions.' – Dan Walker 'An absolute joy to read.' – John Inverdale 'That opening tune always quickens the pulse.' – Henry Winter Sports Report is as much a 75-year history of sport as a BBC radio institution and Pat Murphy pays handsome tribute to a programme that is still followed affectionately by millions. For nearly 75 years, one BBC programme has been a constant factor in chronicling the way sport is covered, in all its many facets. It has been a window on the sporting world all over the globe – packed tightly into every Saturday evening for the bulk of the year. First broadcast in 1948, Sports Report is the longest-running radio sporting programme in the world and one of the BBC's hardy perennials. Pat Murphy has been a reporter on the programme since 1981 and here he sifts comprehensively through the experiences of his contemporaries and those who made their mark on Sports Report in earlier decades. He hears from commentators, reporters, producers, presenters and the production teams who regularly achieved the broadcasting miracle of getting a live programme on air, without a script, adapting as the hour of news, reaction and comment unfolded. Drawing on unique access from the BBC Archives Unit, he highlights memorable moments from Sports Report, details the challenges faced in getting live interviews on air from draughty, noisy dressing-room areas and celebrates the feat of just a small production team in the studio who, somehow, get the show up and running every Saturday, with the clock ticking implacably on. --- Waterstones Best Books of 2022 – Sport

It’s brought great food, an amazing vibe and great cocktails together all under one roof to make it one of the best restaurants, not just in London, but in all of Britain.’ Gordon Ramsay From inauspicious beginnings, Hawksmoor has become a restaurant institution. Both the company and the restaurants have won numerous awards, and the distinctly British food, revolving around charcoal-grilled steaks and seafood, has made Hawksmoor amongst the busiest restaurants in the country. Now with seven restaurants, including a dedicated cocktail bar, Hawksmoor brings you Restaurants & Recipes, an essential read for anyone interested in the realities of restaurants, revealing the trials and tribulations faced along the way, as well as the people, places and plates that have made it so successful. From refined, tweaked and perfected Hawksmoor favourites like Mac ’n’ Cheese to the Steak Slice that caused a social media storm, and from a light and elegant Lobster Slaw to big carnivorous sharing feasts, this book will make you look at the classics anew and fall in love with a whole new collection of dishes for the first time. Bringing together recipes from all the Hawksmoor restaurants, and with insights like how to cook the titans of steaks like the Tomahawk, and the intricate cocktail spec sheets used by the bar staff, Hawksmoor: Restaurants & Recipes is the ultimate bible for booze and beefy perfection – an immaculately researched, sometimes irreverent look into Hawksmoor’s obsessions and inspirations.
