Book excerpt: Frances of the Wider Field is about mothers, daughters, time, mortality-the loss of memory and meaning. Van Prooyen's poems have clarity and ferocity, a wild imaginative grace that captures the joy and strangeness of our most intimate and familiar experiences. Frances appears part god, part curious child, part the small solitary voice inside. Van Prooyen asks " Is a sigh a word? Is a body a word? / Is a tongue the beginning?" She tells us "Memory cannot undo the future. Frances, if I said, /tonight I thank the seven sisters, it's really / the blue dust of God between them. Or you."

Book excerpt: The NHS needs to be an organization in which an open dialogue about care quality is part of the natural culture of the organization, not a duty which only arises in cases of service failure. Robert Francis made 290 recommendations in his report, but in truth they boil down to just one - that the culture of 'doing the system's business' is pervasive in parts of the NHS and has to change. Many who raise their concerns in the NHS at present risk serious consequences for their employment and professional status. But disciplinary procedures, professional conduct hearings and employment tribunals are not the proper place for honestly-held concerns about patient safety and care quality to be aired constructively. The NHS standard contract imposes a duty of candour on all NHS providers. This is an essential principle, but it is not adequately understood or applied. It should mean that all providers create a culture which is routinely open both with their patients and their commissioners. The same principle should apply to commissioners so that they are routinely open and accountable to local communities. The Health Committee recommended this approach in 2011 and repeats that now. It should be a prime role of the CQC to encourage the development of this culture within care providers, and of NHS England to develop the same culture within commissioners. The Health Committee will in future work closely with the Professional Standards Authority to develop the accountability process for professional regulators in healthcare

Book excerpt: Gertrude Barrows Bennett, known by the pseudonym Francis Stevens, was a pioneering author of fantasy and science fiction. In spite of a short career of seven years between 1917 and 1923, which ended suddenly for unknown reasons, Stevens produced original and startling fantasies, leading many to name her the creator of dark fantasy. Her highly imaginative tales went on to inform the works of prominent weird and horror writers, including H. P. Lovecraft and A. Merritt. For this first time in publishing history, this eBook presents Stevens’ complete works, with numerous illustrations, rare texts, informative introductions and the usual Delphi bonus material. (Version 1) * Beautifully illustrated with images relating to Stevens’ life and works * Concise introductions to the novels and other texts * All 5 novels, with individual contents tables * Features rare novels appearing for the first time in digital publishing * Images of how the stories were first published, giving your eReader a taste of the original texts * Excellent formatting of the texts * Includes special bonus texts of the science fiction and fantasy works that inspired Stevens’ tales * Rare short stories available in no other collection * Ordering of texts into chronological order and genres CONTENTS: The Novels The Citadel of Fear (1918) The Labyrinth (1918) The Heads of Cerberus (1919) Avalon (1919) Claimed (1920) The Short Stories The Curious Experience of Thomas Dunbar (1904) The Nightmare (1917) Friend Island (1918) Behind the Curtain (1918) Unseen — Unfeared (1919) The Elf-Trap (1919) Serapion (1920) Sunfire (1923)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Francis Watkins was an eminent figure in his field of mathematical and optical instrument making in mid-eighteenth century London. Working from original documents, Brian Gee has uncovered the life and times of an optical instrument maker, who - at first glance - was not among the most prominent in his field. In fact, because Francis Watkins came from a landed background, the diversification of his assets enabled him to weather particular business storms - discussed in this book - where colleagues without such an economic cushion, were pushed into bankruptcy or forced to emigrate. He played an important role in one of the most significant legal cases to touch this profession, namely the patenting of the achromatic lens in telescopes. The book explains Watkins's origins, and how and why he was drawn into partnership with the famous Dollond firm, who at that point were Huguenot incomers. The patent for the achromatic telescope has never been satisfactorily explained in the literature, and the author has gone back to the original legal documents, never before consulted. He teases out the problems, lays out the evidence, and comes to some interesting new conclusions, showing the Dollonds as hard-headed and ruthless businessmen, ultimately extremely successful. The latter part of the book accounts for the successors of Francis Watkins, and their decline after over a century of successful business in central London.
