Book Synopsis French Tapestries and Textiles in the J. Paul Getty Museum by : Charissa Bremer-David

This book was released on 1997-07-24 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French Tapestries and Textiles is a survey of the Getty Museum's seventeenth- and eighteenth-century French textiles—one of the world's finest collections. Featuring twenty-five extraordinary tapestries woven at the Gobelins and Beauvais manufactories, the catalogue also highlights three carpets, two knotted-pile screens, and two sets of embroidered bed hangings, one of which is the only complete lit à la duchesse surviving from the period. Among the magnificent textiles discussed in this lavish volume are the Emperor of China tapestry series, the whimsical Story of Don Quixote, and Boucher's cycle The Story of Psyche. A gatefold in the book opens to reveal a photograph of the stately twenty-nine-foot carpet commissioned for Louis XIV's Galerie du Bord de l'Eau at the Louvre, a piece never publicly displayed in this century. Each entry includes a listing of artists and weavers, date and place of manufacture, and materials and techniques used, followed by a complete description and a condition statement. The accompanying commentary provides information on the literary, historical, and visual source of design imagery as well as the context of the textile's commission and production. In addition, each textile shown has a complete provenance, exhibition history, and bibliography. For lovers of French decorative arts and connoisseurs of textiles, this book offers a study both of the art of tapestry- and textile-making and of the aesthetic tradition exemplified by these remarkable objects.

Book Synopsis European Imperialism, 1860-1914 by : Andrew Porter
Download or read book European Imperialism, 1860-1914 written by Andrew Porter and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-11 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study surveys the growth of European intervention outside Europe between 1860 and 1914. It treats its subject, 'imperialism', as a process of increasing contact, influence and control, rather than as the nature and consequences of colonial rule. The problems of defining 'imperialism' are considered alongside various analytical approaches to the term. In examining the controversial historiographical literature surrounding this subject, the book criticises particular explanations, and introduces readers to some of the new directions in research and inquiry currently being explored by historians.

Book Synopsis Animality and Humanity in French Late Modern Representations of Black Femininity by : Elodie Silberstein
Download or read book Animality and Humanity in French Late Modern Representations of Black Femininity written by Elodie Silberstein and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-25 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the evolution of the depictions of black femininity in French visual culture as a prism through which to understand the Global North’s destructive relationship with the natural world. Drawing on a broad spectrum of archives extending back to the late 18th century – paintings, fashion plates, prints, photographs, and films – this study traces the intricate ways a patriarchal imperialism and a global capitalism have paired black women with the realm of nature to justify the exploitation both of people and of ecosystems. These dehumanizing and speciesist strategies of subjugation have perpetuated interlocking patterns of social injustice and environmental depletion that constitute the most salient challenges facing humankind today. Through a novel approach that merges visual studies, critical race theory, and animal studies, this interdisciplinary investigation historicizes the evolution of the boundaries between human and non-human animals during the modern period. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, visual studies, critical race theory, colonial and post-colonial studies, animal studies, and French studies.
