Book Synopsis Sovereignty in Fragments by : Hent Kalmo
Download or read book Sovereignty in Fragments written by Hent Kalmo and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-03-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The political make-up of the contemporary world changes with such rapidity that few attempts have been made to consider with adequate care, the nature and value of the concept of sovereignty. What exactly is meant when one speaks about the acquisition, preservation, infringement or loss of sovereignty? This book revisits the assumptions underlying the applications of this fundamental category, as well as studying the political discourses in which it has been embedded. Bringing together historians, constitutional lawyers, political philosophers and experts in international relations, Sovereignty in Fragments seeks to dispel the illusion that there is a unitary concept of sovereignty of which one could offer a clear definition. This book will appeal to scholars and advanced students of international relations, international law and the history of political thought.

Book Synopsis Maria Lassnig by : Hans Ulrich Obrist
Download or read book Maria Lassnig written by Hans Ulrich Obrist and published by Walther Konig Verlag. This book was released on 2017 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The exhibition at Municipal Art Gallery of Athens, 2017 is the last exhibition project that Maria Lassnig was able to plan personally with the curator Hans Ulrich Obrist. Around 50 works are on show - paintings and works on paper, especially watercolours - which seize upon motifs from Greek mythology and their expansive and permanent exchange with all Mediterranean civilisations. Although these works by Maria Lassnig are not so well known, they manifest characteristics typical of her work: the awareness of the body, the painterly rendering of the inner and outer world, as well as animal portrayals and landscapes. In an unusual selection from Maria Lassnig's oeuvre the exhibition and the accompanying catalogue with contributions from leading scholars and artists spotlight her unique visual idiom, in which she combines science with a subjective emotional life, and Mediterranean landscapes with figures from ancient mythology. Accompanies the exhibition Maria Lassnig: The future is created from the fragments of the past, 31 Mar - 16 Jul 2017, Municipal Gallery, Athens, Greece.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those who believe in reincarnation recognize that our previous lives profoundly influence our present existence. But what about the lives still to be lived--our future? For Gloria Chadwick, whose Discovering Your Past Lives sold 250,000 copies, the spiritual level knows no time: our experiences meet as energy vibrations, and past, present, and future can shape each other. Her new guide gives us an expansive view of exactly how that happens, as she delves into the concept of karma, how thoughts and beliefs can shift the rhythm of our reality, and illusion versus reality. Featuring real-life experiences from Chadwick’s students and clients, as well as interactive exercises, it opens up a new way of understanding the universe.

Book excerpt: Phagocytosis—Past and Future is a collection of contributions by investigators who met in the Province of Messina, Sicily, in October 1980 to discuss the functions of phagocytic leukocytes in the host-parasite relationship. The topics discussed are largely in the areas of cell biology, cellular immunology, and biochemistry. They ranged from aspects of cellular movement and the ingestion process per se, to definition of substances that affect the function of phagocytic leukocytes and the nature of cidal mechanisms at the molecular level. This volume is organized into six sections encompassing 33 chapters and begins with an overview of Ilya Ilich Metchnikoff's life as well as his scientific contributions, particularly in the area of bacteriology and his research on mesodermal amoeboid cells. The next chapters focus on the mechanism of phagocytosis, with reference to aspects of cell membrane, cell movement, and ingestion. The reader is methodically introduced to the biochemical aspects of phagocytosis, from molecular modulations to energetics, oxygen radicals, and enzymes. The discussion then shifts to macrophages, their function in antigen recognition, receptor-mediated endocytosis in macrophage cell hybrids, and the role of phagocytosis in macrophage activation. The remaining chapters examine the cidal mechanisms of phagocytic leukocytes and aspects of inflammation. This book will be of interest to scientists and researchers in fields such as biology, biochemistry, immunology, pathology, pharmacology, and physiology.

Book Synopsis Future Generation Information Technology by : Young Hoon Lee
Download or read book Future Generation Information Technology written by Young Hoon Lee and published by Springer. This book was released on 2009-11-16 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As future generation information technology (FGIT) becomes specialized and fr- mented, it is easy to lose sight that many topics in FGIT have common threads and, because of this, advances in one discipline may be transmitted to others. Presentation of recent results obtained in different disciplines encourages this interchange for the advancement of FGIT as a whole. Of particular interest are hybrid solutions that c- bine ideas taken from multiple disciplines in order to achieve something more signi- cant than the sum of the individual parts. Through such hybrid philosophy, a new principle can be discovered, which has the propensity to propagate throughout mul- faceted disciplines. FGIT 2009 was the first mega-conference that attempted to follow the above idea of hybridization in FGIT in a form of multiple events related to particular disciplines of IT, conducted by separate scientific committees, but coordinated in order to expose the most important contributions. It included the following international conferences: Advanced Software Engineering and Its Applications (ASEA), Bio-Science and Bio-Technology (BSBT), Control and Automation (CA), Database Theory and Application (DTA), D- aster Recovery and Business Continuity (DRBC; published independently), Future G- eration Communication and Networking (FGCN) that was combined with Advanced Communication and Networking (ACN), Grid and Distributed Computing (GDC), M- timedia, Computer Graphics and Broadcasting (MulGraB), Security Technology (SecTech), Signal Processing, Image Processing and Pattern Recognition (SIP), and- and e-Service, Science and Technology (UNESST).

Book Synopsis Plant Breeding: Past, Present and Future by : John E. Bradshaw
Download or read book Plant Breeding: Past, Present and Future written by John E. Bradshaw and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-08 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to help plant breeders by reviewing past achievements, currently successful practices, and emerging methods and techniques. Theoretical considerations are also presented to strike the right balance between being as simple as possible but as complex as necessary. The United Nations predicts that the global human population will continue rising to 9.0 billion by 2050. World food production will need to increase between 70-100 per cent in just 40 years. First generation bio-fuels are also using crops and cropland to produce energy rather than food. In addition, land area used for agriculture may remain static or even decrease as a result of degradation and climate change, despite more land being theoretically available, unless crops can be bred which tolerate associated abiotic stresses. Lastly, it is unlikely that steps can be taken to mitigate all of the climate change predicted to occur by 2050, and beyond, and hence adaptation of farming systems and crop production will be required to reduce predicted negative effects on yields that will occur without crop adaptation. Substantial progress will therefore be required in bridging the yield gap between what is currently achieved per unit of land and what should be possible in future, with the best farming methods and best storage and transportation of food, given the availability of suitably adapted cultivars, including adaptation to climate change. My book is divided into four parts: Part I is an historical introduction; Part II deals with the origin of genetic variation by mutation and recombination of DNA; Part III explains how the mating system of a crop species determines the genetic structure of its landraces; Part IV considers the three complementary options for future progress: use of sexual reproduction in further conventional breeding, base broadening and introgression; mutation breeding; and genetically modified crops.
