Book excerpt: This progress report describes the results of research work on the characterization of fracture behavior in boron/aluminum (B/Al) composites. Emphasis has been placed on the correlation between the observed failure modes and the deformation characteristics of center-notched B/Al composties, where particular attention has been given to the proper test procedure and analytical appraoch employed. The purpose of this work is not merely to generate and furnish quantitative data but also to discuss the appropriate methodology to be employed in characterizing a new composite material system. The investigation focused on the deformation characteristics, crack tip damage growth, fracture strength, notch sensitivity, and the associated characterization methods. Extensive acoustic emission information is reported and an attempt is made to distinguish among major failure mechanisms, and to monitor fatigue damage progression. Considerable care must be taken to distinguish between emission due to new damage growth and emission due to friction.

Book excerpt: The concept of reinforcing a material by the use of a fiber is not a new one. The Egyptian brick layer employed the same principle more than three thousand years ago when straw was incorporated into the bricks. More recent examples of fiber reinforced composites are steel-reinforced concrete, nylon and rayon cord reinforced tires, and fiberglass reinforced plastics. In the last several years considerable progress has been made on new composite structures particularly utilizing boron (on tungsten substrate) fibers in various matrices. Many of these advances have been reviewed recently by P. M. Sinclair1 and by Alexander, Shaver, and Withers.2 An excellent earlier survey is available by Rauch Sutton, and McCreight.3 Boron-reinforced epoxy composites are being fabricated and tested as jet engine components, fuselage components, and even as a complete aircraft wing because of the tremendous gain in experimentally demonstrated properties such as modulus, strength, and fatigue resistance, particularly on a weight normalized (e.g., strength/density) basis. Other than glass/epoxy and boron/ epoxy composites and perhaps boron/aluminum, the systems now under study are in the early stages of research and development. These include other boron/metal composites, graphite/polymer, graphite/metal, graphite/graphite, alumina/metal, and aligned eutectic (directionally, solidified) combinations. As Sinclair points out, designers are wary about filamentary composites becausethere is little background information and scant experience.

Nonstandard thin-sheet Charpy and Izod impact tests and standard full-size Charpy impact tests were conducted on composites containing unidirectional 0.10-,0.14-, and 0.20-mm-(4-, 5.6-, and 8-mil- ) diameter boron fibers in 1100, 2024, 5052, and 6061 Al matrices. Impact failure modes of B/Al are proposed in an attempt to describe the mechanisms involved and to provide insight for maximizing impact resistance. The impact strength of B/Al was significantly increased by proper selection of materials and processing. The use of a ductile matrix (1100 Al) and large-diameter (8-mil) boron fibers gave the highest impact strengths. This combination resulted in improved energy absorption through matrix shear deformation and multiple fiber breakage.
