Book excerpt: Excerpt from Days and Deeds: A Hundred Years Ago The large brown house on the hill was the jolliest place to Visit that Roger knew anything about. To be sure, there were no children to play with. Baby Alice was not old enough to do much more than sleep or cry, and of course she could not know what a pleasant playmate her big, merry grandfather could be. But Roger knew, though Colonel Davenport was not his grandfather, only his great aunt's husband, and not really a bit related. Still, no grand father could make a boy have a better time; and when, one May morning, Mrs. Saybrook took her son for a month's Visit at the big house, Roger had a right to be the happiest child in the whole Connecticut colony. One thing, however, seemed hard. Colonel Davenport might not be at home very much, for he belonged that year to the Connecticut legislature. It was not so easy to go from Hart ford to Stamford as it is now, and the colonel did not try to get home Often, although some times he would come on Friday or Saturday and spend Sunday with his family. Indeed, he was expected the very week when Roger and his mother began their visit; and with him would come Governor Trumbull and three or four other men who were the colonel's close friends. The people at the big house needed Roger's mother to help get ready for so many guests; they needed a little boy, too, who could run on errands and do all the things that the colonel's own boys had done years before. On Friday afternoon, after three days of run ning and waiting on the little boy's part, every thing was ready for the visitors. Roger had not wasted a minute that day. Long before break fast he had thrown corn to the hungry hens, had led Dobbin and Dolly to the spring, and had helped Jonas, the hired man, to milk the cows. He did not really do any milking himself, but he helped Jonas wonderfully, for he could carry the milking stool and the empty pails. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Money in Reds This text, full of truth and consolation, has been a great help to me for several years back, as only those driven by necessity accomplish real work in this world. Blessed and useful is the lash that drives us to better deeds. Sometimes the lash strikes from within, and some times from without. The study of human nature, in every day walks of life, is more interesting to me than most vaudeville performances on the stage. There is a natural tendency in the human race, like sheep to follow the leader, and often I fear there is about as much thought behind it. The number of real men that will stand for what they know to be right against public opinion is very small, and should be appreciated. While I consider nearly every poultry editor in the country is my friend and all fair-minded ones have admitted they never received any complaints from any of their subscribers but what I made good promptly, still, when Grant M. Curtis called them to gether, after I was' pushed over Niagara Falls, and malic iously and falsely stated that he had received a wheel barrow full of complaints against me, there was no one that had independence enough to call his bluff and deny what they must have known to be false. Now that I have heard all the inside particulars about this poultry magnate meeting, and all the poultry papers that I care -to advertise with have asked for my advertise ment, I will state for the information of those interested that I stopped my advertising with Curtis' paper before the A. P. A. Meet was ever held, as it was not paying, so he never had the opportunity to refuse my advertisement; hence his apparent reform loses much of its true ring, and personal grudge appears very strong to any fair minded person, and my daily mail proves the country is full of this class. The waters of the lake, which is twenty miles in circumference, were burnished by the setting sun. The surrounding plains were as green as an English meadow, and beautiful forest-trees bordered the extreme boundaries of the plains, like giant warders of the adjoining jungle, Long promontaries, densely wooded, stretched far into the waters of the lake, forming Sheltered nooks and bays teeming with wild-fowl. The deer browsed in herds on the wide extent of plain, or lay beneath the Shade of spreading branches. In some spots, groves of trees grew to the very water's edge in others, the wide plains, free from a single stem or bush, stretched for miles on the edge ofthe lake thickly-wooded hills bordered the extreme end of its waters, and distant blue mountains mingled their dim summits with the clouds. Book excerpt: My father says there has been a forest here for over a hundred million years," Jeannie Baker's young protagonist tells us, and we follow him on a visit to this tropical rain forest in North Queensland, Australia. We walk with him among the ancient trees as he pretends it is a time long ago, when extinct and rare animals lived in the forest and aboriginal children played there. But for how much longer will the forest still be there, he wonders? Jeannie Baker's lifelike collage illustrations take the reader on an extraordinary visual journey to an exotic, primeval wilderness, which like so many others is now being threatened by civilization.

Book excerpt: Hilarious and true-to-life, witty, compassionate, and impossible to put down, Straight Man follows Hank Devereaux through one very bad week in this novel from the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Empire Falls. • Now the AMC Original Series Lucky Hank. William Henry Devereaux, Jr., is the reluctant chairman of the English department of a badly underfunded college in the Pennsylvania rust belt. Devereaux's reluctance is partly rooted in his character—he is a born anarchist—and partly in the fact that his department is more savagely divided than the Balkans. In the course of a single week, Devereaux will have his nose mangled by an angry colleague, imagine his wife is having an affair with his dean, wonder if a curvaceous adjunct is trying to seduce him with peach pits, and threaten to execute a goose on local television. All this while coming to terms with his philandering father, the dereliction of his youthful promise, and the ominous failure of certain vital body functions. In short, Straight Man is classic Russo—side-splitting, poignant, compassionate, and unforgettable. Look for Richard Russo's new book, Somebody's Fool, coming soon.

Book excerpt: The book that launched environmental history, William Cronon's Changes in the Land, now revised and updated. Winner of the Francis Parkman Prize In this landmark work of environmental history, William Cronon offers an original and profound explanation of the effects European colonists' sense of property and their pursuit of capitalism had upon the ecosystems of New England. Reissued here with an updated afterword by the author and a new preface by the distinguished colonialist John Demos, Changes in the Land, provides a brilliant inter-disciplinary interpretation of how land and people influence one another. With its chilling closing line, "The people of plenty were a people of waste," Cronon's enduring and thought-provoking book is ethno-ecological history at its best.

Book excerpt: Initially published under the pseudonym Currer Bell in 1847, Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyreerupted onto the English literary scene, immediately winning the devotion of many of the world's most renowned writers, including William Makepeace Thackeray, who declared it a work "of great genius." Widely regarded as a revolutionary novel, Brontë's masterpiece introduced the world to a radical new type of heroine, one whose defiant virtue and moral courage departed sharply from the more acquiescent and malleable female characters of the day. Passionate, dramatic, and surprisingly modern, Jane Eyre endures as one of the world's most beloved novels.
