Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This is among the handful of prison books - they include George Jackson's Soledad Brother and BB Michael Ignatieff's A Just Measure of Pain - which moves and informs. The sociology of prison riots,MM the causes of outbreak and the nature of the reactions, are subjects which have been largely ignored and need to be understood by those who either study criminal justice or work in the system.' - His Honour Judge Stephen Tumin This challenging book is essential reading for everyone with an interest in penal policy and practice. It uses extensive documentary evidence to demonstrate that prison riots in Britain and the US have shifted from traditional riots in which prisoners made no specific demands, to consciousness-raising riots where they often challenged the dominant penal philosophy of rehabilitation. The book illustrates the violent nature both of many prison riots and of responses to them by the authorities. It concludes that the challenge to all involved in debates about penal policy and practice is to project a future for prisons which goes beyond the patterns of confrontation which have been so much a feature of prison riots in the past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The office of Lord Chancellor is one that has frequently been questioned. However, the extent and diversity of the questioning seldom attained the proportions reached in the final years of the twentieth century, when they drew attention to the deficiencies of the position of Lord Chancellor, the inherent tensions within that position and the incongruity of such a role in a modern democracy. This book examines these questions. It analyses the development and current position of the Lord Chancellor as head of the judiciary, member of the Cabinet, judge and Speaker in the House of Lords and considers his role in relation to judicial appointments. It also looks at the LCD, the development of which acts as an indicator of the changes in the office of Lord Chancellor. It concludes by making proposals for reform, the most far-reaching of which is the abolition of the office.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book makes public, for the first time, a full account of the development of the privatization of prisons, centred on the only full-scale empirical study yet to have been undertaken in Britain. After providing an up-to-date overview of the development of private sector involvement in penal practice in the United Kingdom, North America, Europe and Australia, the authors go on to describe the first two years in the life of Wolds Remand Prison - the first private prison in Britain. They look at the daily life for remand prisoners, assess the duties and morale of staff and compare the workings of Wolds to a new local prison in the public sector. The authors conclude by discussing some of the practical and theoretical issues to have emerged from contracting out, ethical issues surrounding the whole privatization debate and implications for the future of the prison system and penal policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there is an extensive sociological literature concerning race relations, racial discrimination and the process of migration, this has tended to focus on snapshots at a given moment in time. There are few historical accounts of the development of black communities in Britain. This book will be the first social history of a black community in modern times which attempts to weave many aspects of life together to give a more comprehensive understanding of the lives of black people in Britain. The book will address the way peoples’ lives are constructed through racialized identities and how African Caribbean people in Leicester relate to the wider community. It provides an important contribution to the debate concerning the social class profile of different ethnic groups. The work is gendered throughout and discusses the different nature of the experiences of men and women. The 1991 census shows Leicester to have the highest proportion of ethnic minority residents of any city outside London, however compared to other cities with black and Asian communities, it has received little attention from academics. The present study charts the development of Leicester’s African Caribbean community from its origins in the Second World War to 1981 and its changing construction from 'immigrants' to 'ethnic minority'.

Book excerpt: This collection of essays, first published in 1984, on multicultural education seeks to introduce teachers, teacher educators, educational administrators, policymakers and others to several of the most significant dimensions of the field. But it also brings out the complexity of the issues and the dangers of over-simplification, the inadequacies of much of the available data, and the need for better long-term strategies.
