This book, as all Scripture, should be interpreted according to the plain grammatical and literal meaning of the words used, giving each word the exact sense it bears in all other books. 2. The book is not, as is commonly thought, a book of symbols, although there are symbols in it. It should be read as, in the main, a literal prophecy of events to transpire in a future period closely preceding and following the return of Jesus to the earth. It is a message from the ascended Savior pertaining to his second coming. 3. The theory that a day means a year must be rejected: and the forty-two months, twelve hundred and sixty days, ten days, &c., be regarded as simple measures of time. 4. The dispensation in which we are living is non-prophetic and void time. 5. Reject the idea that the Revelation describes the history of the Christian Church during this dispensation. 6. It is also necessary to believe that in the mysterious orderings of Divine Providence, the old Eastern Roman Empire is to become resuscitated. It will yet be an attraction such as our California was in 1849, and the old empire become re-existent, old cities rebuilt, and called by their old names, Jerusalem and Babylon among others, and they will meet with great worldly prosperity for awhile. This will probably occur in the interval between the coming of the Lord down into the air for his saints and his subsequent descent with them to the earth in judgment. 7. The nineteenth verse of the first chapter describes two divisions of the book and not three, as is inferred from our English New Testament. The first division embraces the things which John saw, and what they signify, contained in the first five chapters. The second division embraces the things which are about to happen after these, contained in the rest of the book. 8. No reference to popery can be met with in Scripture. 9. The topic of the book being the second coming, it saves confusion to know that there are two stages to the Advent: First - the Lord comes down into the air for the purpose stated in the first five chapters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Book of Revelation The work before the reader consists of lectures delivered in the ordinary course of ministry, taken in short hand, and now published for the second time. Much matter of a practical nature, due to the wants of the souls addressed, has been omitted; for which were substituted remarks of a more critical character, a few when the exposition was first printed, and now with considerably greater fulness and frequency. Mr. Elliott will find that his observations are subjected to an examination, always, I trust, friendly, but sometimes searching. He is not the man, however, to complain, because I have endeavoured, chapter by chapter, to bear in mind the capital points of the Historical system, which, through his able pen, has attained its neatest shape, with the most elaborate apparatus of evidence and argument in its favour. Of his zeal for truth, no less than of his general learning and minute research, specially in history and antiquities, it is hardly needful to say that any estimate of mine differs not from that shared by almost all who know himself and the Horae Apocalypticae. If I have spoken with plainness and decision, in matters which involve an adequate knowledge of the balance of testimony for and against disputed readings, or an accurate and comprehensive grasp of Scripture, in particular of prophecy, it is because I believe that these are his weaker points, and that his just reputation in some things might expose less instructed and indiscriminating admirers to be misled in others. Whether I have shown sufficient grounds for rejecting Historicalism, not as a partial accomplishment, but as the complete and exclusive fulfilment of the Apocalypse, it is not for me to say. Four grim horsemen, the Antichrist, the ten-horned beast, the ultimate battle at Armageddon, the "mark of the beast." It's no wonder that these images have griped the imagination of so many--and have been variously interpreted as symbolizing everything from Hitler and Gorbachev to credit cards and the Internet. Is the book of Revelation a blueprint for the future? A book of powerful symbolic imagery with warnings for the church? Is it essentially an imaginative depiction of historical events in the first century? Four Views on the Book of Revelation explores four interpretations of the book of the Apocalypse: Preterist – a historical interpretation, arguing that most of John’s prophecies occurred in the first century, soon after his writing of them. Idealist – a spiritual or symbolic interpretation, arguing that the events in Revelation are not literal, and that apocalyptic literature requires a different approach than the Gospels or Epistles. Classical dispensationalism – a literal interpretation based on a reading of Revelation that pays close attention to the rules of grammar and the separate eras of covenantal history. Progressive dispensationalism – a modification of classical that has its root in the understanding of Christ's reign beginning immediately after the resurrection. The Counterpoints series presents a comparison and critique of scholarly views on topics important to Christians that are both fair-minded and respectful of the biblical text. Each volume is a one-stop reference that allows readers to evaluate the different positions on a specific issue and form their own, educated opinion.

Excerpt: ...a theme for praise infinitely more thrilling, more reverential and more joyful, than ever was known before. Hence, as we have already noted, the contrast marked between the " singing " of the Church of the first-born, and the "saying" of the angels by their thousands many in chapter v. Well; here in chapter vii. we listen to the praise of this earthly company of God's redeemed. And not without design, surely, is it that that praise of theirs is called a "cry" or " shout," (cpaovrec) rather than a song; as if their joy, however great, was exceeded far by the joy of that other, the heavenly company of God's redeemed. If it be a song at all that they are said to sing, (for so it is indeed termed elsewhere) the term is still qualified by their song being spoken of as "the song of Moses, tha servant of God, and the song of the Lamb." The words of their song, too, triumphant as they are, are widely different from the words used to express the Church's ecstasy. (See chap. xv. 2--4, and compare chap. i. 5, 6, or v. 10.) And once more; whilst it is a distinct and definite promise to those who are His now, that they shall be kept even from the hour itself of the temptation which is coming upon all the world, (chap. iii. 10); here, on the contrary, as we are expressly informed, these "come out of the tribulation, the great one." Besides which, it is one of the elders who, as we have seen, represent the Church, that gives the information to John about these future out-comers from the tribulation. Clearly, therefore, tho elders, that is to say, the Church, are a distinct company from those out-comers themselves, since the one company points to the other company, and discourses concerning it. It was essential that the general bearing of this chapter, ...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revelation of the Son of God: Some Questions and Considerations, Arising Out of a Study of Second Century Christianity, Being the Hulsean Lectures for 1910-1911 These lectures are here printed as they were originally written, not as they were actually delivered. The lecturer may choose his own subject, but the length of the lecture is mercifully conditioned by other considerations than the interest of the subject or the inclination of the preacher. The first half of the first lecture to some extent goes over ground which I have treated more fully elsewhere, but it seemed necessary to set the subject in its context, if any proper comparison were to be made between the Christian religion in the second century and the other philosophies and faiths of that period; and without some such comparison of distinctive features, no satisfactory conclusions could have been drawn. In these questions and considerations arising out of the study of second century Christianity, it is as impossible to claim originality as it is to specify one's obligations. It is a joy to labour in a field of such rich and varied interest: it is an honour to gather even the gleanings of former fellow-labourers, the praise of whose learning, ability and zeal are in all the churches. There is one, however, to whom it is a special pleasure to acknowledge a very particular debt of gratitude. Book excerpt: IT is certainly cause for deep regret that to so many Christians the Book of Revelation seems to be what God never intended it should be-a sealed book. The book of Daniel was to be sealed till the time of the end (Dan. 12:9), but of Revelation it is written: "Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand" (Chap. 22:10). It is clearly evident that this portion of Holy Scripture was given for our instruction and edification, but thousands of the Lord's people permit themselves to be robbed of blessing by ignoring it. Significantly enough, it is the one book of the Bible which begins and ends with a blessing pronounced on those who read and keep what is written therein (Chap. 1:3; 22:7). Surely God did not mean to mock us by promising a blessing on all who keep what they cannot hope to understand! It is only unbelief that would so reason. Faith delights to appropriate every part of the sacred record, and finds that "they are all clear to him that understandeth." The true title is given us in the opening verse. It is, "The Revelation of Jesus Christ;" not "The Revelation of St. John the Divine." There is no MS. authority for this latter designation, and it shows all too plainly how far some early editor had slipped away from first principles. John was a saint as all believers are saints. He was not a divine! Such a title would have amazed him beyond measure. Nor is the book the revelation of John or of any other servant of God. It is the revelation of Jesus Christ Himself. The word rendered "revelation," and sometimes "apocalypse," means literally an unveiling, or manifestation. So this book is the unveiling of our Lord Jesus Christ. He is its one great theme. It presents Him as the Son of Man in the midst of the churches during the present dispensation; and as the Judge and the King in the dispensations to come. If you would learn to appreciate Christ more, read this book, frequently and prayerfully. It reveals Him as the Lamb rejected, soon to reign in glory-the Lamb on the throne!
