Book excerpt: "A model devotional and interpretative volume." -New Outlook "Extraordinary value...a baptism of light on beloved passages of Scripture, made possible by the clear-eyed observations of the brilliant geographer of Palestine." -The Expositor: A Theological Magazine "Few modern writers are at times more suggestive, and even inspiring, than George Adam Smith, and it is with rare pleasure we read such a delightful little book as his 'Four Psalms.'" -Christian Faith and Life "These expositions are in every way admirable, and worthy of the highest admiration." -Aberdeen Free Press "Very choice expositions in a deeply spiritual vein. Learning, genius and grace combine to make these four choice psalms more precious than ever." -Baptist "These studies stimulate the mind, inspire the heart, and invigorates the whole moral and religious ideas of the individual." -Dundee Advertiser "It is a little book, but it is in Professor Smith's most welcome manner, and itself most welcome to all of us." -The Expository Times "George Adam Smith's formative years fell in a time when men's minds rocked and quivered under the stress of two great problems. The social conscience, newly awakened, was in the throes of a complete reversal of values. The results of the higher criticism were precipitating countless minds into a hot and anguished conflict. Upon a spirit so sensitive, so keenly and vividly sympathetic, as that of Dr. Smith, then a young minister in Aberdeen, these facts made an indelible impression. They bit into the very fiber of his soul, they came to dominate and control all his work. They gave him an unquenchable impulse, a persistent motive. This is true especially of the great shaking of souls that followed upon the sudden challenging of the dogma of verbal inspiration. That upheaval and wreckage of faith was to him the supreme tragedy of his day. At the back of his most scholarly and brilliant work lies a haunting concern for the perplexed and baffled soul whose Lord has been taken away and who does not know where they have laid him, and for the preacher who has come to an impasse and suddenly finds himself with a sorely diminished Bible from which to draw pulpit inspiration." -Homiletic Review CONTENTS I PSALM XXIII: GOD OUR SHEPHERD II PSALM XXXVI: THE GREATER REALISM III PSALM LII: RELIGION THE OPEN AIR OF THE SOUL IV PSALM CXXI: THE MINISTRY OF THE HILLS AND ALL GREAT THINGS PSALM XXIII

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twenty-third Psalm seems to break in two at the end of the fourth verse. The first four verses clearly reflect a pastoral scene; the fifth appears to carry us off, without warning, to very different associations. This, however, is only in appearance. The last two verses are as pastoral as the first four. If these show us the shepherd with his sheep upon the pasture, those follow him, shepherd still, to where in his tent he dispenses the desert's hospitality to some poor fugitive from blood. The Psalm is thus a unity, even of metaphor. We shall see afterwards that it is also a spiritual unity; but at present let us summon up the landscape on which both of these features-the shepherd on his pasture and the shepherd in his tent-lie side by side, equal sacraments of the grace and shelter of our God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written for the general reader, to provide a clearer understanding and a deeper appreciation of the religious and literary value of the Psalms. The Hebrew Psalms have a power of survival which is unparalleled in the spiritual life of the Western world. Composed in the Near East twenty-five to thirty centuries ago, they are still read or sung by Jews as well as Christians of all denominations. What is the secret of their vitality? How do the Psalms continue to offer a wisdom for living and a consolation for dying? Dr. Terrien here gives the twofold reason for their enduring power. The psalmists belonged to a nation born to be the servant of the Lord. They placed God at the center of their existence and held that life on earth is not worth living unless it is related properly to the creator of the universe, the giver of life, the master of nature, and the judge and savior of humanity in history. What they said is particularly relevant today, for in times of cultural decay and military disasters they found that human existence, in spite of its trials and madness, remains a truly worthwhile experience. They faced the agony of national disintegration and of personal death, and yet they were singing. The psalmists praised God and prayed to Him, not only as people of faith but also as poets. They formulated their faith with a sublime diction that remains powerful in spite of the obscurities of language and the awkwardness of translation. Dr. Terrien shows how these poets captured in words certain dimensions of truth and beauty which defy ordinary expression, and why through the marriage of thought and poetic emotion they were able to carry their impact to us across the barriers of time and tongue. This book illustrates how best to reap the wisdom and consolation of the Psalms so that we too may understand their meaning for today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new edition includes more than 4,800 resources available at more than 10,000 Internet sites that provide information on a range of biblical study topics including Bible translations in English and other languages, audio translations of the Bible in English and other languages, commentaries, dictionaries, and other resource materials including ones in Greek, Hebrew and other ancient languages. The author also has adopted a new method of referencing and cataloging the most widely used web pages to facilitate a major expansion of resources without increasing the physical length of the book itself. In cases when ten or more resources are listed on a single web page, the author has assigned the web page a three-digit code. The code is used to identify this web page as a major resource within the main text, while any needed instructions for use of the site are cross-referenced separately in the final chapter. In adopting this concise method, the author was able to add hundreds of additional or updated web resources, a surprising number of which can be downloaded onto a hard drive for immediate and continued use.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir George Adam Smith (1856-1942) was one of the leading Old Testament scholars in the late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century Scottish church. As Free Church minister of QueenÕs Cross, Aberdeen (1882Ð92), Professor of Old Testament Language and Literature at the Free Church College, Glasgow (1892Ð1910), and Principal of Aberdeen University (1910Ð1935) he popularized modern criticism of the Old Testament. He was determined to show how such an approach to the Bible was compatible with evangelical faith, a position that never sat easily with the confessional position of the Scottish church, and the story of SmithÕs life is an investigation into the relationship between biblical scholarship and evangelical faith. In this new biography, Campbell has made extensive use of primary material, including Smith's letters and journals, to fill a gap in the literature on events within the Scottish church in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. This critical biography will be of use both to students of Scottish church history and students of Old Testament criticism, as well as raising issues that are of continuing importance for all who believe in confessional Christianity as well as in scholarly study of the biblical text.
