Book excerpt: Excerpt from Four Lectures on the Evidences of Christianity In presenting to the public the following Lectures, the editor deems it incumbent upon him, in justice to the gentleman who delivered them, to make a few explanatory observations respecting their publication; and, to account for any errors which may be detected by the literary reader, it may, perhaps, only be necessary to mention that they are printed from the notes of the short-hand writer who took them down at the time of their delivery. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundations: A Series of Lectures on the Evidences of Christianity Of making many books on the Evidences of Chris tianity there is no end; but, neither does he see why there should. Be, until there is an end of infidelity. The present brief series makes no pretensions to fulness of treatment, but it is hoped that its general method and plan, which are believed to be new; its attempt to deal with phases of unbelief which are specially promi nent at the present time; and, above all, its brevity, may secure it a field of usefulness, and realize, in some measure, the expectations of those who have urged its publication. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Evidences of Christianity: Delivered in Philadelphia, by Clergymen of the Protestant Episcopal Church, in the Fall and Winter of 1853-4 We shall accordingly offer some remarks upon what, for the sake of convenience, we may designate as the Practical and Speculative Problems pertaining to the whole matter of belief and scepticism, and we shall then suggest a few considerations bearing more immediately upon Religious Scepticism, and especially upon the religious scepticism of our own day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kingdom of God: A Course of Four Lectures Delivered at Cambridge During the Lent Term, 1912 These Lectures were delivered under the auspices of the Cambridge Christian Evidence Society. They are now printed from a Report taken at the time of their delivery. I have ventured to add to them a Sermon preached in Repton School Chapel on Advent Sunday, 1911, which may serve to indicate the more distinctively religious value of the position taken in the Lectures. It will of course be plain that so brief a discussion of topics so great is bound to be one-sided. Thus (for example), on pp. 80, 81, I have ignored altogether the difference between punishment inflicted by an injured individual and that inflicted by a community through officers who can have no personal resentment against the criminal. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experience the Crowning Evidence of the Christian Religion: Lectures; Delivered Before the Biblical Department of Vanderbilt University Is it worth while in our day, in this place, to discuss the evidences of Christianity? I think so. One may claim to be rooted and grounded in the faith so firmly that to him argument in its favor and refutation of objections are superfluous. Happy is he who has the full assurance, if it be supported by the realization in his heart of the benediction so familiar to the ear, "The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all." For to know this grace, love, and communion is to know the gospel; and to experience the blessing is to attain the end for which Christ Jesus came into the world. It shall be the aim of these lectures to set forth such experience not only as one of the evidences, but as their crown. It carries faith into knowledge: we know him whom we have believed. The scholar, the theologian, cannot affirm this; the Christian can. He does not stand on the outside, and strain his eyes to see what is within; he has entered into the holy of holies, where the glory shines. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Doctrines of Christianity, in Controversy Between Unitarians and Other Denominations of Christians: Delivered in the First Independent Church of Baltimore In commencing, then, a course of Lectures on Chris' tian Doctrine, I cannot do amiss when I attempt to lay, as he did, the foundation of religion in the Unity of God. But on the very threshold of our inquiries we meet a difficulty, we encounter what seems to us an Opposite doctrine, that God is three persons. Before we make any progress, then, we must examine this doc trine. To this subject, therefore, our first three lec tures will be devoted. And While we discuss the doc trine of the Trinity, let nothing which may be said be construed into disrespect, either for the understanding or the integrity of those who hold it. It is a doctrine for which the present generation are not. Responsible. It has been handed down to them by their fathers, With the venerable associations of antiquity; it is interwoven with literature and devotion, and thus has a sacredness in their eyes which takes the place of evidence, and almost precludes calm and dispassionate investigation. The duty of theepresent age is inquiry. Truth is par amount both to authority and sacred association. Our first allegiance is due to Truth. I invite all, then, to the discharge of a duty, when I' invite them to follow me in this discussion. If they adopt my conclusions, in justice to their understandings I should hope it will not be on insufficient ground. If they fail to do so, they will at least exchange a faith derived from tradi tion for one founded on evidence. In the course of these Lectures I shall frequently quote from the Confession of Faith of the divines at Westminster, and from the Thirty-nine Articles of the Church of England 3 not from any unkindness towards those who profess these creeds, or with a de sign to hold them up to odium or derision, but merely because they contain the most formal and authentic statement of the doctrines I shall discuss, and because they are the public and acknowledged standards of large and respectable bodies of the Christian church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fact of Christ: A Series of Lectures When the greatest religious master whom the world has ever known put one day to His first disciples a certain question, and, on receiving an answer to it, declared that on the strength of this He could build His church, it is evident that here is to be found what He regarded as the critical issue for religion and its proper point of departure. To state the religious problem as Jesus stated it is surely the most hopeful way of approaching the subject not only of Christianity, but also of religion generally, on which He is the indisputably supreme authority. It surprises us, however, when we look at what this question was. The occasion referred to is, of course, the scene near Caesarea Philippi, when Jesus asked His disciples, 'Whom say ye that I am?' The question is a notable one, but it astonishes us that it should be treated as a fundamental one. The inherent truth of a teachers message would always appear to be a more important matter than anything, however interesting, about the teacher himself. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Positive Evidences of Christianity The author of this vigorous treatise is an estimable minister of the Baltimore Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. He bears the honored name of Beverly Waugh, late Bishop in the M. E. Church - a warm and life-long friend of the Bond connection, in Maryland, to which the author belongs. It may well be supposed, therefore, that he was steeped in Methodism from his birth; and if Methodism is "Christianity in earnest," as Dr. Chalmers says, an earnest defense of Christianity may be expected in this work. The reader will not be disappointed. The conception of the book originated in the author's careful perusal and study of the best works on the Evidences of Christianity - Paley, of course, being prominent. Encouraged by judicious friends, he prosecuted his investigations, and committed his views to writing, until they were developed into a well-proportioned treatise of sufficient size, and, we will add, of due importance, to justify its publication. We have had the pleasure and profit of its perusal as it has been passing through the press, and we hesitate not to say it is an excellent resume of the Evidences of Christianity, as presented by Paley, Row, and other apologists, embodying much fresh original matter adapted to the "perilous times" in which we live. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religion of the Christ: Its Historic and Literary Development Considered as an Evidence of Its Origin, the Bampton Lectures for 1874 It is, however, commonly admitted now that we need not limit the genuine remains of the great Apostle to these four letters and it is certain, what ever our opinion as to the formation of the canon of the New Testament, or the degree of authority attaching to it when formed, may be, that the Reli gion of the Christ, or the belief in Jesus as the Christ, is not only common to every document com prised in it, but is alike the very backbone and essential framework of all the documents. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A View of the Internal Evidence of the Christian Religion OF the following treatise Dr. Paley says, in his incomparable work on the evidences of Christianity, I should willingly, if the limits and nature of my work admitted of it, tran scribe into this chapter the whole of what has been said upon the morality of the gospel by the author of 'a View of the Internal Evi dence of Christianity 3' because it perfectly agrees with my own Opinion, and because it is impossible to say the same things so well. A short account of the general designs of the Society, of the plan of the Lectures, and the reasons for their appearing in a different order from that in which they were delivered, will be found in an explanatory paper which the Bishop of Gloucester and Bristol has been kind enough to draw up at the request of the Committee. Though placed, as last written, at the end of the volume, the attention of the reader should be early directed to this paper.
