Book excerpt: Fountain Lindsey runs a charter boat business on the Florida Gulf coast. His business is good but something craws in Fountain's stomach, something that is a gnawing need to do something better with his life. To sail may be the answer. Not just a Sunday afternoon outing, but a real sail. The weather, people he knows, and good sense tells him to stay in. The boat stored on his dock is too old; he is a fisherman, not a sailor. But the need is established and he has to go. And, if he is going, he is going to make it big. He is going to forget what is sane and proper and go around the world. And he is going all the way on the boat, Fountain's Glory.

Book excerpt: Rome would be unthinkable without its fountains. They play a fundamental role in this ancient city's history and to date have largely contributed to its beauty. The Fontana di Trevi acts like a magnet to the Roman tourist, often being their first destination of their visit. Rome has many famous fountains but also many that are almost secret and hardly known at all but are just as beautiful and interesting. With his camera, Karl Lagerfeld has embarked on a dialogue between the past and the future, the result being a series of 50 daguerreotypes. The daguerreotype process - an almost forgotten technique mastered by only a few specialized artists nowadays - was the first photographic process to permanently fix an image onto a medium. The surface of a daguerreotype is similar to that of a mirror, with the image made directly on the silvered surface. Depending on the angle viewed, the image can change from a positive to a negative and adapt an almost three-dimensional appearance. Karl Lagerfeld's photobook is a modern and colorful interpretation of the traditional monochromatic Daguerreotypeplates masterfully rendered on paper by Steidl.

Book excerpt: A collection of 70 recipes celebrating the history and stories of the classic American soda fountain from one of the most-celebrated revival soda fountains in the country, Brooklyn Farmacy. A century ago, soda fountains on almost every Main Street in America served as the heart of the community, where folks shared sundaes, sodas, ice cream floats, and the news of the day. A quintessentially American institution, the soda fountain still speaks of a bygone era of innocence and ease. When Brooklyn Farmacy & Soda Fountain opened its doors in 2010, it launched a revival of this great American original, capturing the hearts of a new generation. Featuring abundant full-color photography and vintage illustrations and advertisements, The Soda Fountain explores a rich history—from the origins of seltzer in the nineteenth century, through the transformation of soda during Prohibition and the Depression years, right up to today’s fountain renaissance. Featured recipes range from classics like the Purple Cow and Cherry Lime Rickey to contemporary innovations that have made Brooklyn Farmacy famous, like The Sundae of Broken Dreams (topped with caramel sauce and broken pretzel bits) and Makin’ Whoopie! Sundae (with hot fudge and mini chocolate whoopie cakes). Recreating beloved treats like egg creams and milkshakes with local, seasonal, and artisanal ingredients, Gia Giasullo and Peter Freeman, the sibling cofounders of Brooklyn Farmacy & Soda Fountain, teach you how to resurrect the proud American soda fountain tradition at your own kitchen counter. With its fascinating anecdotes, mouth-watering pictures and easy-to-follow steps, this nostalgic cookbook proves that the soda fountain is a culinary and cultural institution that continues to delight.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fountain in the Valley is about the breaking process and the beautiful transformation of us--God's earthen vessels--into the beautiful bride of Christ. It chronicles the spiritual journey to the humility and brokenness required to be fit for the Master's service. This body of work was literally born in a dream, which is depicted on the front cover as prophetic art. Fountain in the Valley also includes original poetry. One poem eloquently describes submission to God--allowing him to lead the dance of life. Many inspirational and transparent testimonies appear throughout the book, where you'll read of individuals going through purification processes. The details of real-life medical miracles are highlights of each chapter. The roles of traditional medicine and God's healing power are explored and united.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scripture, and especially the Book of Psalms, has always formed the substance of the daily prayer of Christian monks and nuns. Monastic men and women spend more time among the scriptures each day than in most other activities. How do such regular interactions with the texts of the Old and New Testaments help us renew our Christian imaginations; how might these reflective encounters enable all of us to discover the wind of the Spirit, the fountain of living water and the fire from which God speaks, within the printed pages of our Bibles? In The Wind, the Fountain and the Fire, Mark Barrett, a Benedictine monk of Worth Abbey, offers a Lenten pathway through scripture, opening the gateway of sacred imagery as a mode of prayerful reflection. For each week of Lent he has selected a different image: the Dust; the Mountain; the Well; the Light and the Tomb. In these richly imagined biblical symbols we are invited to find keys which can unlock both our experience of scripture and our understanding of our own hearts.

Being a puritan, the work Flavel displays here is well thought out but presented in a way that will require some reflection from the reader. In a time when Christian values, especially those of the Catholic church were being called into question, it is important to take a historical look at what the puritan preachers were teaching in their day in order for us to get a sense of what Christ in this circumstance, requires from us and Flavel gives a good picture of who Christ was and his requirements of us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This little volume is about JESUS the Son of God, and sets forth God's way of saving sinners. It is hoped that the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ will be found the most prominent object in it, and that it is calculated not only to arrest the careless and thoughtless, but to confirm and comfort weak and troubled saints. In the blood of Jesus God speaks peace and love to every sinner that believes; and that same precious blood enables the believer to draw near and keep near to God. The blood of Christ, being the true ground of peace and source of confidence in God, gives rest of conscience in God's presence, where Jesus now is, and fills the heart with praise. Many believers, however, are in great bondage. They truly look to Christ for salvation, and haveeternal life, though they are scarcely sensible of it. Like Lazarus, when he left the tomb, they really have life, but are unable to walk in liberty, to minister for the Lord, or happily confess His name, because of the grave-clothes which envelop them. They struggle; but they are fettered, and need to be loosed. Some vainly try to get liberty by looking into their own hearts, or are expecting to receive it from some man, instead of looking only to Christ, and believing His Word. It is of the utmost importance that the believer should learn from God's truth his security and standing in Christ; that he is already a child of God, on the other side of death, in the heavenlies in Christ Jesus; not yet with, but in, Christ Jesus. This being realized, the natural inquiry must be, What is my hope? We reply, The Lord's coming. We do not hope to have everlasting life; for he that believeth hath everlasting life. (John 5:24.) We do not hope for forgiveness of sins; this also we have now: "In whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins." (Eph. 1:7.) We do not hope for righteousness; this too we have now; for "Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth." (Rom. 10:4.) What, then, do we look for? The inspired reply is, "We look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto His glorious body." (Phil. 3:20, 21.)

Book excerpt: Fountain is a character in its own play, its face worn by the years, traced by the touch of familiar hands. On the gentle slope of a Georgia hill sits Fountain Campground. For years, it has hosted the Camp Meeting, a week-long religious revival complete with tents, food, prayer, and praise. Author Dale Wiley grew up loving this great Georgia institution, an integral part of his family's life and faith. For his entire life, he heard the old stories about Fountain Camp Meeting. But when he found a treasure trove of information on the site's past, he discovered a story much different from the one of his childhood. Full of friendship, warmth, and love, the Fountain Campground continues to represent a rich tradition of faith. Through a compelling mixture of vivid detail and personal recollection, Wiley takes you to the present-day camp area and to the Southern kitchens that make the meeting experience so memorable. He also traces the roots of its inception nearly two hundred years ago, revealing little-known facts about Georgia's history. Part history, part memoir, and part cookbook, There Is a Fountain: Voices and Stories of an Old-Time Southern Camp Meeting takes you deep into the heart of Southern religion.
