Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known today as a colorful resort destination featuring family entertainment and a thriving arts district, Galveston was once notorious for its flourishing vice economy and infamous red-light district. Called simply "The Line," the unassuming five blocks of Postoffice Street came alive every night with wild parties and generous offerings of hourly love. A stubborn mainstay of the island cityscape for nearly seventy years, it finally shut down in the late 1950s. But ridding Galveston of prostitution would prove much more difficult than putting a padlock on the front door. Kimber Fountain pursues the sequestered story of women who wanted to make their own rules and the city that wanted to let them.

Book excerpt: Selected for the 2009 National Poetry Series by Natasha Trethewey Set in southern New Mexico, where her family's multicultural history is deeply rooted, the poems in Carrie Fountain's first collection explore issues of progress, history, violence, sexuality, and the self. Burn Lake weaves together the experience of life in the rapidly changing American Southwest with the peculiar journey of Don Juan de Oñate, who was dispatched from Mexico City in the late sixteenth- century by Spanish royalty to settle the so-called New Mexico Province, of which little was known. A letter that was sent to Oñate by the Viceroy of New Spain, asking that should he come upon the North Sea in New Mexico, he should give a detailed report of "the configuration of the coast and the capacity of each harbor" becomes the inspiration for many of the poems in this artfully composed debut.

Book excerpt: Fountain Lindsey runs a charter boat business on the Florida Gulf coast. His business is good but something craws in Fountain's stomach, something that is a gnawing need to do something better with his life. To sail may be the answer. Not just a Sunday afternoon outing, but a real sail. The weather, people he knows, and good sense tells him to stay in. The boat stored on his dock is too old; he is a fisherman, not a sailor. But the need is established and he has to go. And, if he is going, he is going to make it big. He is going to forget what is sane and proper and go around the world. And he is going all the way on the boat, Fountain's Glory.

Book excerpt: A moving, authentic exploration of spirituality and the domestic from a prize-winning poet The wry, supple poems in Carrie Fountain’s second collection take the form of prayers and meditations chronicling the existential shifts brought on by parenthood, spiritual searching, and the profound, often beguiling experience of being a self, inside a body, with a soul. Fountain’s voice is at once deep and loose, enacting the dawning of spiritual insight, but without leaving the daily world, matching the feeling of the “pure holiness in motherhood” with the “thuds the giant dumpsters make behind the strip mall when they’re tossed back to the pavement by the trash truck.” In these wise, accessible, deeply emotional poems, she captures a contemporary longing for spiritual meaning that’s wary of prepackaged wisdom—a longing answered most fully by attending to the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

O that I knew how to engage this whole town to Jesus Christ, and make fast the marriage-knot betwixt him and you, albeit after that I should presently go to the place of silence; and see men no more, with the inhabitants of the world. Ah sirs me thinks I see the Lord Jesus laying the merciful hand of a holy violence upon you: methinks he calls to you, as the angel to Lot saying, ""Arise, lest ye be consumed; And ""while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, the Lord being merciful unto him. And they brought him without the city, and said, Escape for thy life, stay not in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed,"" Gen. 19: 15. How often (to allude to this) has Jesus Christ in like manner laid hold upon you in the preaching of the gospel, and will you not flee for refuge to him? Will you rather be consumed, than to endeavour an escape?

He believes strongly that God-honoring, Christ-exalting, and Spirit-empowered preaching plays a critical role in revival and awakening. No one models this dynamic better than Jonathan Edwards. He was a pastor who was a protagonist of the First Great Awakening. He thought deeply and critically about religious movements, and his reflections and sermons provide valuable "fodder" for reflection. Revival Preaching extracts the most important lessons of Edwards's writings and sermons for preaching in today's world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
